Austerity was a shitty, but politically palatable, policy due to the intergovernmental nature of the Eurozone, and the divorce between an internationalized monetary policy versus national fiscal policy, and the nature of monetary union. Essentially, German voters required austerity measures as a precondition to bailing out Greece, Ireland, and other nations hit by the contagion (despite Germany economically benefiting from the Eurozone disproportionately with easy export markets, but hey). Beyond this, if we refer to the economic trilemma, Eurozone nations gave up independent monetary policy in exchange for free movement of capital and a stable exchange rate, which means that nations like Greece which would have traditionally leveraged monetary policy to devalue their currency (and improve both their competitiveness and reduce their debt burden) no longer have that option available (though this line of argument is dubious, as if Greece was still on the drachma, it would've been demolished by speculative attacks instead of it being "shared" across the Eurozone), which leaves fiscal policy as the main government tool to manage public debt (and the limited, reluctant aid from the rest of the Eurozone). Continued austerity is problematic, but given the fiscal state of many Eurozone countries (look at France's 2015 fiscal budget, what is essentially "mandatory" spending, and the limited (practical and political) options to raising revenues), may still continue. Recovery was/is swifter in the US due to a largely unified fiscal and monetary policy (the comparison would be if the Eurozone had a unified fiscal policy and a federal structure; individual US states are as varied as European nations, really) and a combination of stimulative fiscal policy (during the crisis period of ~2008-2010), and, probably more importantly, incredibly stimulative monetary policy (QE1/2/3), combined with the US dollar's status as the, basically sole (~87% of currency reserves is pretty much uncontested), foreign reserve currency, which has allowed the US to borrow/spend/print/loan at significantly lower interest rates (figuring in inflation, US interest rates was actually negative at times) and expand monetarily quite rapidly, while still retaining high currency value (gogo gadget seigniorage). I graduated undergrad with a degree in International Studies last year (focus on International Politics and Development). International political economy is an huge interest of mine as well. Am looking to apply to grad school soon(tm); having my GREs June 9th.

It's the only way to get a Librarian (I scowered the internet for just the HQ librarian but couldn't find one) Plus it comes with bikes and some troops. Probably going to get Azrael next just because apparently he's in 90% of all lists for DA.
