I did like Infernal Affairs but it's not exactly Zack Snyder level Its easy to have good taste you get a broad knowledge of anything then just choose whatever the person who is judging thinks is good. I'd only consider like one of those movies as a personal favorite of mine TBH. But it's still a good collection. Its not about what you think are the best movies but what you see as good movies. This is the essence of what good taste is in anything.
Its very relevant idea of how you should adjust when running a restaurant or making friends.
I will check out some of the movies you listed.

Fiddler on the Roof Full Metal Jacket Samsara (from what I hear, I only saw 1 part and it freaked me out lol) V for Vendetta Lars and the Real Girl.
ps I repeated Full Metal Jacket cause it was a total mindfuck, but I also could have repeated a lot of other movies. I just think Full Metal Jacket was cray. double ps Man I could add Saving Private Ryan too. triple ps I just think I am easily provoked into thought.

I watched the first part of VHS the other day, need to take that shit in parts, can't go all at once.

Hi I love movies and I'm really disappointed I missed the meat of this conversation!
1) 2001: A Space Odyssey. (I actually very often dislike Kubrick's movies, but for some reason his style really works here for me. This decision is also affected in that I saw the movie in an actual Cinerama with the proper screen size and excellent sound distribution. Also Douglas Trumbull is the man).
2) Synecdoche, New York. (It's a good movie. A realllllly good movie. Maybe that makes me a poser but I liked it anyways).
3) Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. (I know I'm basic, but to me it always amazes me how much fantasy stems from this. It's a good movie, obviously, but the reason it's so high on my list is because it allows me to enjoy the best parts of the quintessential fantasy novel without actually having to read it, since I find the books to be pretty dry).
4) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. (If only I knew somebody who didn't immediately fall asleep when watching Westerns, I could show them the awesomeness that is this movie. Clint Eastwood plays Clint Eastwood but nobody cares because Ennio Morricone is pretty damn awesome. It's odd, a lot of my top movies aren't the best movies I've ever seen. I don't know why I like them so much.)
5) Whiplash. (As someone who has in the past gone fairly deep into the music world, this movie rang to my bones and shook me up. I took the entire movie personally. It was also gorgeously edited and the music selection was done well, although I wish they didn't put Buddy Rich and Charlier Parker up on a pedestal, as neither were the masters of their respective musical fields, but it made for a better story. Ugh I love this movie more every time I see it.)
6) The Grey. (Underrated movie starring Liam Neeson, he gives an even better performance than usual, as his wife died in an accident in the snow just a couple years before shooting this movie. You can tell some of his character is guided by that experience. This movie might have gained some points just by me expecting it to suck, so take that as you will).
I love juuuuuuust about every movie ever though (I think I heard Wei mention American Psycho, another fav of mine), so making this list is really hard for me outside of 2001 ASO. And I think I heard Parnage mention Galaxy Quest? Nobody I know has seen that, so I'm glad you're there for me buddy <3
Seriously though Parnage I say "AND IM DRAGGING MINES" every other day and nobody ever gets it

I loved that improvised scene though. I saw Samsara also on a huge Cinerama screen, it was pretty cool. I love me some pretty movies. Hell, I even liked Avatar more or less.

The rest of the Rings books? Maybe they wouldn't be as much of a hit. Perhaps I could smuggle in the Silmarillion?

LITERALLY everything you say about movies is invalidated because you have never cried during one.

Silmarilion is great for lore, story wise? It's pretty eh to read to people imo. It doesn't have a concise story, it's spread out over the first two ages in like 500 pages I think?

1) Because the Silmarilion is a post-humorous publication and summation of all of Tolkien's notes and writings by his sons, and was not written to be a concise story or novel, and spans dozens of projects that JRR never finished and published, from the earliest ones like the Fall of Gondolin + Show Spoiler +(the first, and most complete draft, written immediately after WWI, and contains archaic terms/concepts like gnomes and the like) to incomplete poetic epics like the Lay of Leithian + Show Spoiler +(there are two drafts: once back in high school and wallowed in my Tolkien obsession, I could recite like...600? lines of the second draft, but digression) .
You get more complete stories in the Unfinished Tales/History and Lore series.
Heck, a better example would be the Children of Hurin book that was released, and contains a polished version of the Lay of Turin. I would recommend that as an introduction if you're interested in the backstory, as opposed to the Silmarilion, which is better described as the legendarium's bible
And since we're back on the topic, my actual list of favorite movies would look something like this,
Lincoln Dr. Strangelove Letters from Iwo Jima Saving Private Ryan Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut, the theatrical release is shit) City of Life and Death La Haine Prayers for Bobby Spirited Away & Princess Mononoke
Lord of the Rings has always held a soft spot in my heart, but as massive pro-book Tolkien nerd, it does not live up to expectations. + Show Spoiler +
Hmmm. Now that I've written this out, I sense a common theme in my movie taste...

so apparently we've now moved from movies that make you think to favorite movies?

Jeez, after watching that Superman v Batman trailer release, I wonder if affleck is juiced to the gills to get that big within a short amount of time?

It'd be one thing if he was already pretty swole, but it looked like he put on like 40-50lbs of muscle in like a year.

Force of Will is the best children's card game.
It's exactly like Magic the Gathering, except with anime pictures.
Nothing can go wrong ever.
