Hey now, there's a difference between ACTUAL responsibilities and ones you inflict upon yourself and then feel indebted to. Unless there aren't.

Well sure. I guess I didn't consider that a "personal project," but then I guess projects don't get much more personal than that.

As much as computer hardware is miles ahead, you have to be lightyears ahead to emulate something since you simulating hardware with your hardware.

so i got pokemon y right before i went home on vacation i also missed (obviously) a huge chunk of this thread without real computer access for 10 days
so if we already did this conversation could someone link me? if not...
i think with how easy it is to battle people, i want to actually build a strong team and do some fights. i've currently had 3 battles, one against my 15yo cousin who i trounced; one against cris now that i'm back home, who i embarrassingly beat 6-0 with my snorlax solo. on my plane ride home i ended up sitting next to a guy my age who also had a 3ds and we did some battling/trading and he explained a bit to me, but i feel like TL has a bigger grasp on things so:
what *is* EV training? i realize it's boosting your stats, but can you explain it like i'm 5? is there a limit to how much you can boost your stats? should i be focusing on certain stats for certain pokemon? or is speed always the best (cause it seems like going first is a huge advantage always)?
what is the difference in the "nature" of a pokemon? does it affect their stat growth? i have finally played with my snorlax enough that he will occasionally shrug off a status effect (not always good, as he sometimes shrugs off sleep when i'm trying to sleep talk =_=), does playing with a pokemon change their nature?
breeding: i've never done it. i've heard there are certain characteristics you want in pokemon parents so that their children have a perfect set of (EVs? IVs? something like that?). how is an IV different from an EV?
do shiny pokemon have any sort of bonus or are they wanted because of their rareness?
what, the, hell, is, POKERUS? what a stupid name.
i'm still blatantly against running ugly pokemon, so i want to make a team of only cute, viable pokemon. is this possible?

Of course I wouldn't; that's why I do this stuff. I'm mostly asking because I know there must be people out there who decide not to stress themselves out and just do fun stuff outside the stuff they have to do and I was wondering if I could find any.

I would go to /r/pokemon and search for guides; those usually are pretty good. Also check the Pokemon X&Y TL Thread, lots of stuff there too.

I haven't found any good emulators for console games, they all feel so clunky. :/
I'm just waiting for a emulator the 3DS right now that works with an ipad or some sort of touchscreen/tablet.

EV Training - Boosting the stats of a Pokemon outside of the terms of battle, through Super Training, battling specific Pokemon, or items like Calcium.
Natures - The Nature of a Pokemon affects it's base stats and (I think) growth in those stats. Natures cannot be changed.
Breeding - You can breed natures, abilities, moves, and IVs from parent Pokemon. Slightly RNG, but not hard to spam.
Shinies are just recolors. Some look awesome, some are meh.
Pokerus is a "disease" that makes the afflicted Pokemon gain EVs faster than normal. Good for training, and iirc it can be spread, but is still rare to get.
Smogon is a competitive Pokemon site, they do tier listing for Pokemon to say which ones are strong and which ones are weak. Here are the tiers from Black and White, which are no longer 100% accurate but still a good outline of which Pokemon are "competitively viable".
That said, unless your opponent is really hardcore, most of this doesn't matter as long as you train correctly and put some effort into it.

For anyone building a team of cute Pokemon, Mega Mawile is pretty terror and you can easily cover her weaknesses with a solid dragon type such as Dragonite (although some may not consider Dragonite/Mawile to be aesthetically pleasing but I do so w/e).
Breeding guide from reddit.
Pokerus probably not very important anymore. Super training is almost certainly a faster way to EV train than traditional EV training (and you get rare items doing it). Note that a lot of pokes end up with 252 EVs in two stats. Offensive pokemon tend to go 252 Atk or SpA depending on whether they're physical or special and then take 252 in speed and 4 somewhere else (often Def or SpD). Defensive tend to take 252 in one of the defenses or both, sometimes 252 in HP, really depends on their base stats. Some pokemon don't mind going second but those are usually more defensive 'mons who already have bad speed and speed EV training wouldn't do anything. Nearly every Pokemon that is offensive (either a revenger killer or sweeper) wants 252 in speed though. edit: Although, I'm not certain, but does Pokerus increase EV gains in super training?

No it doesn't.

Oh, well, there you go. Pokerus not very important in GEN VI.

YES YOU DO lol dude the appearance of the game in the queue has nothing to do with whether my setup is finished or not, it has to do with when other games finish and what other games go up before mine. As of now there is a Caller game which may or may not happen, and then probably another big normal before mine, so it'll be like 2 months considering how slow signups have been lately.
