Well honestly I think this edition could be the one to nail it (though that might be a bit optimistic) depending on how they go. Assault was really strong in 5th ed with reliable charge distances, strong alpha strike armies like Blood Angels, and little to no defense other than "Deploy really far away". In 6th, they nerfed assaults by making it so you can't assault turn 1 or when you arrive by deep strike and by having you make random charge distances. Then they buffed shooty armies by introducing Overwatch and popularizing fortifications like the Aegis Defense Line (which is basically bring your own 4+ cover and difficult terrain). Additionally, Allies were introduced, so armies that lacked assault/assault defense could ally in someone who could. They went from one extreme to the other, when really all they needed was to buff shooting armies or nerf assault, not both. If they buff up assault, it should be interesting again. Honestly, assault is good still. Close-combat based units that get into melee with shooting units will tear through their shit and laugh. It's just much, much harder to get there reliably nowadays. Either you get shot before you get there, or you get there and can't make the charge for another turn and get shot again in the meantime. The only melee units that work well are ones that are tough enough to survive the hail of fire and also mobile enough to get into range where charge is more guaranteed (~4-6 inches is the "safe zone" where it's hard to fail). Of course, as a disclaimer, this is all stuff from "competitive" players. Casual games against people who don't cheese-list don't feel this a lot, but even then you'll see shooty units win more games than not. | ||
