I feel like from reading this thread that I'm not missing out. if you're ok with reading stories in pictures (this can be a big hurdle to jump, though - the variety of art styles and quality means that there's another layer to dislike on top of the writing), then odds are good that there are manga you'd like. if, for example and is likely by your being on this site, you like enjoy reading science fiction, then 20th century boys is regarded as a classic in science fiction manga. by the same author, monster is maybe the most famous mystery thriller it's just that what gets brought up in general discussions by nature tends to be lowest common denominator, and as with any commercial art form (but anime/manga especially so) the most broadly appealing stuff can sometimes be the basest. the truth of this stereotype is further reinforced by the particular demographic that the anime/manga culture attracts, but the fan base isn't monolithic and neither is its entertainment

Do this for 40 chapters or so and you have your own magical storyline completely different from the actual events! You're missing out man. One Piece actually has some good dialogue. See if you did what you described for Bobobo instead of One Piece, you'd have one heck of an acid trip. I'd actually strongly recommend you doing that, other Ryan.

I'd say Hellsing too but I've never technically finished that. Vagabond is getting better and better though, so once that finishes I'd add that to my list.

I will never finish OP and Naruto. Bleach is like one word a page so you can skim it quickly. The biggest issue is that they keep adding new characters without removing any so the plot doesn't develop and your stuck watching 10 different fights where all heroes have plot armour.

WHATEVER LET'S DO THIS On April 11 2014 12:55 Chrispy wrote: I'll check both Monster and 20th century boys out, thanks. be warned that both those manga are a bit dated in terms of art style and might feel a bit childish as a result. not trying to put you off taking a look at them, it's just that i'd hate to see a foray into a potentially very rewarding medium stifled by my bad recommendations i personally didn't find 20th century boys compelling and find blame! to be more to my liking, but that just goes to show the variety of manga - 20th century boys and blame! are vastly different, but you could think of them as, say, the ender's game and dune of manga here's a quick list of 3 additional 'serious' works that i would suggest to somebody who is open to reading manga but is put off by the typical ecchi/I FIGHT FOR MY FRIENDS cliches of typical manga. i've noted the core genres and a quick content rating (sex, violence, etc) by each work blade of the immortal - historical fantasy (samurai), action - some sex and gratuitous violence throughout eden - science fiction (post-apocalyptic), action, coming of age, epic (subjective) - heavy violence, some nudity, and a ton of sex at sporadic points. eden is maybe my favorite manga, certainly top 5 vinland saga - historical fiction (vikings), action - heavy violence i've only listed action series here, as strong works in other genres, such as mushishi in supernatural fantasy, can take a bit of familiarity with the manga format to enjoy, whereas depicting crazy fighting in pictures is pretty darn straightforward. that isn't to say that blade of the immortal, eden, and vinland saga don't have good stories - they have excellent ones, and eden in particular has what i consider to be an incredibly well crafted story those reading this who are already familiar with manga (and wow you're actually still reading this) might take issue with the primer i listed, specifically the glaring omission of berserk. that's because i think berserk, while absolutely mind blowing at times, is often unnecessarily graphic/intense and is just going to put off a lot of people at times with that, myself included

I mean the way the industry works rarely does the entire story play out as seen in Ares or Veritas or they keep on adding stuff like in Bleach. I will never finish OP and Naruto. I finished watching the Arrancar arc in Bleach, is it worth to keep watching or does it go to shit afterwards?

You still have the fake Karakura town and all of Aizen's bullshit to get through, though. Eh, I'd say start it but don't feel any obligations to finish it if you're getting bored.

I totally hate Reno (it's so dry and bland except for casinos which I can't legally care about), but the concert we went to, featuring Avishai Cohen, was totally brilliant. The guy's a genius on the trumpet, naturally, but the whole back-up represented themselves as much as he did, and sometimes more. Absolutely one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Also GJ Guitar against Montecristo lololol
