Hi everyone, this post is to clear some things up in regards to Afreeca World August Blitz and how the finals played (or didn't) play out.

We had the first 3 days of this event go well, a great qualifier turnout then 2 days of groups that went off without major issue.

Today for the playoffs that wasn't the case, this afternoon about 2 hours before the event start I received a message from Zest that he'd be forfeiting due to illness. Zest had advanced 2nd in his group and was slated to play PartinG who had advanced from his group.

With Zest forfeiting this meant I'd get to do the usual scramble to find a replacement for the event, in tournaments that typically have 3 matches having a walkover is not something we usually do as it removes 1/3 of the stream. PartinG however did not wish to play vs a replacement and believe he should have had a walkover straight into the finals.
Despite this ruling as the admin, it was decided to seed in a fair replacement. The aim wasn't to be unfair to PartinG but to follow natural practice for a replacement and do what's best for the event while I was also trying to commentate/observe the other match.

For the replacement I sought FanTaSy and others who were down the line of players who Zest had defeated, similar to what other events do when needing replacements. Along with this I also considered other similar Protoss players in case no one got back to me, had we seeded in an outside replacement player it would have been with PartinG's consent as a simple solution instead of having to delay/wait. These events are early and some SC2 pros sleep in which is why I considered any potential replacement.
puCK responded to me who I figured would be a fair replacement as a Protoss meaning the matchup would be the same. I mentioned a potential replacement of puCK to PartinG but only would have done it if FanTaSy or earlier participants didn't respond by match time.

FanTaSy did end up responding to me, he agreed to play at first and we thought all was well, being the next natural seed PartinG would have been fine playing. That wasn't the case though, and PartinG seemingly convinced FanTaSy not to play since he still wanted the walkover. After this PartinG hastily forfeited despite me telling him we'd figure this out, as a TO my goal is to create the best/most games for fans.

With FanTaSy not playing and PartinG seemingly forfeiting, after consulting with others I did give in and offer PartinG the walkover going against my previous ruling. Otherwise the tournament was finished with 1 finalist and no other RO4 match.

Despite still trying to find a solution PartinG ceased responding to me in PM he turned off his stream while trying to get me to discuss it in his public discord chat with his fans who were insulting me/the tournament instead of discussing it privately. PartinG himself directly insulted me in public chat which is sad as I've been his fan for years on end and enjoyed his stream since he became a regular. He tried to get his fans riled up against me/the event which is further disappointing as a reaction to an online event.

Regardless of the way the event went down I do apologize to the fans who wanted to see some great SC2, I love doing Afreeca World and will continue to do so as we have for years. The earlier streams were fun and at least we got the sick Dream vs DRG match.

zest already advanced to 4th place by getting out of the group. he is in the 3rd-4th place money ($50). Why would he magically be demoted out of 4th place because he got sick? he already earned that money.

Further, replacing zest with fantasy is essentially giving fantasy the walkover rather than parting, even though fantasy lost to Zest and was eliminated in the group stages.

This is not the same thing as WCS. GunFu's spot only earned him a chance in the bracket tournament, not any money. Zest had earned part of the prize pool and you had no business replacing him with anyone, let alone someone who he had already eliminated.

Parting was right to be upset, he should have gotten the walkover. You owe him $100 for 2nd place and Zest $50 for 3-4th place.

This makes no sense, why would the correct decision as a TO be to replace zest with fantasy in the semi finals? Its a tournament and two hours before the semi finals one player forfeits its should just be a w/o regardless if it loses the tournament a set of games; what fan would be happy in the case where fantasy goes to the finals and wins when he shouldn't be there in the first place. As far as PartinG not wanting to play after the whole debacle I'd be surprised if you could find any player who would be willing to play after having a TO do everything in their power to give you a disadvantage instead of what should be a clear walk over in the semi-finals you worked hard to get into.

I'm not sure it's fair to paint PartinG in a bad light in this case. He wasn't trying to rile up his fans, they got riled up on their own. He was just trying to argue his case and I think language barrier got in the way. He ended his stream because he was literally crying, because this situation upset him so much. He got screwed, stood up to himself, and then got screwed even more.

I really can't blame PartinG for this incident, and honestly no other tournament does replace the Semifinal opponent with someone who already got eliminated. Zest didn't even notify his declaration of forfeit beforehand. He just literally decided not to show up right before the match. And for PartinG himself, He will feel very upset when he's not advanced automatically and have to take the semifinals match with another player, and especially the person who already got ELIMINATED beforehand. He really felt he was the one being punished, not Zest who were absent. and I didn't understand why PartinG had to take all the fall from the forfeit of Zest. as a TO you can think about the tournament itself but also you have to SERIOUSLY CONSIDER HOW THE PLAYERS THINK THEY WOULD BE TREATED. I sincerely hope to look at the other side of perspective, not just one.

PartinG was frustrated not just because he got treated badly, he felt he couldn't give his exact opinion to others because of the Language Barrier. Most importantly, He might have rattled up later on, but I can assure you as a Korean Fan of PartinG and avid SC2 eSports fan, he never riled up his fans. We were just as frustrated with the decision you guys made.

and I hope you guys have this be a reminder when you guys have next "Tournament" open.

really upsetting with how laughngamez threw fantasy under the bus here.
fantasy was unaware of what happened until he found out how parting was being treated and thats why he backed out.

laughngamez really is bending the truth here and its upsetting because i really enjoy his events but this is not how you should treat players. also its upsetting to get blocked by laughngamez on twitter for having a civil discussion about this. good luck with future tournaments when the real story comes out.

Just to throw in my 2 cents as an organizer.

If a player forfeited on me when they are in the first round of a playoff, they would be forfeiting their prize money. In that case they would be replaced by the next player who would have been there based on group performance etc.

To put FanTaSy in as a replacement is what any tournament organizer would do. The only reason I wouldn't do this would be if I was waiting on the player to show up at tournament time, at which point you don't want to delay people and matches finding a replacement. But the forfeiter would not be paid prize money.

At the end of the day, the tournament is run by the admins and the admins words go. If PartinG wanted to forfeit because he disagrees, he should forfeit his prize money in doing so.

Like I said, replacing players is what any tournament organizer would do. It's happened in many tournaments before and players have never been upset about it or anything, because its common practice.

Also this is the exact same as WCS because there was more money for Top 8 vs Top 16. Sooo yeah...

I really don't get how the organiser did anything wrong here, replacing a missing player with the next in line is the usual way to do thing.

It's also obviously the most fair way to do it, why the hell would Parting have walkover into the final + the money that come with it because his opponent quit while DRG/Dream have to play their match.
Having to play the next in line is already an advantage since you play someone worst. (it's not like it was a preparation style tournament either there were barelly 24h between the two matches)

I mean could you imagine if Classic dosen't get to go to Blizzcon and they just decide to give leave his spot empty.

Why would you assume you get a walkover if someone forfeits or is otherwise unable to make it? Getting the runner up to take the spot is common sense.

You would assume you get a walkover because the player forfeits and its the middle of a tournament. The group stage is finished it doesn't matter if the time in-between the matches is 2 weeks or 15 minutes; you're putting the player who qualified at a disadvantage by throwing out their preparation against the person who they are actually supposed to play. The idea that it is somehow unfair because the player gets a free road to the final because his opponent forfeits is crazy; its unfair that fantasy gets to be un-eliminated because the actual opponent decides they don't want to play regardless of the circumstances, its unfair to PartinG that he doesn't get the preparation time all the other players get because the TO doesn't want to lose matches on stream. Filling in the slot if this was before the tournament started is no issue, but replacing a semi-finalist 2 hours before match start doesn't really shout out "common-sense" and just because its "how all other tournaments are run" doesn't seem like a particularly compelling argument for not running a fair tournament.

Running tournaments is a thankless job, being a TO sucks and means making a lot of hard decisions, but ultimately what should be most important to a tournament is doing things in a way that will result in an even playing field for the people competing.

PartinG was notified zest wasnt playing 30 minutes before he was supposed to play. you could see it on his stream.
Then Laughngamez told PartinG he will play Puck, and then like 10minutes later he said Fantasy.

you could see PartinG on stream saying "wtf is this guy doing? i dont know who iam playing..this is stressing me out F this"
