Our first match will be UConn vs Michigan State, broadcasted March 20th at 7 PM PDT!
  • UConn (7-2) enters as the higher seed and heavy favourites here, boasting a powerful Protoss lineup with GMs printf, Hjax, and TurkeyDano.
  • Michigan State (4-4) has some pieces to work with including GM Tambi (Z), but they don't have a lot of depth after that.
  • This should be a straightforward series. UConn is the superior team and they have even managed to get a favourable lineup matchup, avoiding the dreaded printf vs. Terran scenario.
  • Prediction: UConn 3-0 Michigan State

Up next is Temple vs UOIT, broadcasted March 22th at 7 PM PDT!
  • If you had to pick a team that's most likely to win it all this year, you would probably pick Temple (7-1). With two second-place finishes in the past two seasons, they feel like this is the year they will finally break through.
  • Temple's front line of Suppy (Z) and Tesla (P) is arguably the scariest one-two punch in the CSL. Both of these players are top-5 players in the league along with JonSnow, Silky, and omgabanana.
  • On the other hand, the lower-seeded team UOIT (3-5) is stronger than their record shows. Their ranking has fallen due to a combination of key players being unavailable and important upsets.
  • The key for UOIT will be their depth. Temple does not have a lot of firepower outside of their top two guys, while UOIT features several capable players across their entire lineup.
  • That being said, depth is not that important in the context of the CSL, where Suppy and Tesla will both be able to play twice. UOIT will counter with their own ace player, Jason (T), as well as former compLexity Gaming player beaRs (Z).
  • Prediction: Temple 3-2 UOIT.

He uh, goes to Thomas Jefferson University for medical school now. Since his school is really small and just down the street from Temple University, he was eligible to play for Temple through a CSL exception. He graduated from Berkeley in 2016 after leading them to their 3rd CSL championship.

As far as I know he hasn't been playing SC2 that much lately, but he's so talented that he's still one of the best players in North America despite that.

Thanks for the update there! Appreciate it . Yeah he's quite a talent.

Keep up the great work CSL, you rock!

Up next is UIUC vs UC Irvine, broadcasted March 27th at 7 PM PDT!
  • UIUC (4-3) has to be feeling good about their draw in the Ro16, facing arguably one of the weakest teams in the playoff bracket in UCI (1-7). Through sheer luck, UCI was able to qualify for the playoffs as a 3-seed despite losing every single match except one. UCI's lone win of the season came when Jason, the best player on UOIT, no-showed for their match.
  • UCI will be led by the veteran FourBolt (Z), a high-calibre Zerg veteran who has been representing UCI for years. However, after FourBolt their talent falls off considerably. Look for UIUC to take advantage.
  • UIUC also sports a strong Zerg player on top of their roster in Crilmon. In addition, they have been boosted this year by a duo of talented freshmen players from China: DKeyboard (Z) and RedoroChika (T).
  • UIUC is notable for housing some former Starcraft 2 powerhouses: former foreign fan favourite IdrA (Z) and former GSL finalist Rain (T) both currently attend UIUC. However, they have unfortunately not been involved with the local Starcraft team there.
  • Although it seems that UIUC has more talent, this is not a free win by any means. With ZvZ being such a key matchup as well as the always-volatile 2v2 in play, there is a chance for UCI to pull off the upset if they come in prepared.
  • For both teams, reaching the top 8 of CSL would mark uncharted territory, easily being the best performance in their respective histories.
  • Prediction: UIUC 3-1 UCI.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs. University of California, Irvine

Up next is Georgia Tech vs UC Berkeley, broadcasted March 29th at 7 PM PDT!
  • Georgia Tech (7-2) has had a good year so far, even managing to finish on top of their group to achieve a #1 seed for the playoffs. This has all been made possible due to the return of their savior, TheoRy (P). In years past, TheoRy was the ace player for Georgia Tech up until he graduated, but he has since returned as a post-graduate student and is once again leading the team through the CSL.
  • If you only look at match records, you might think that UC Berkeley (4-4) is a little bit overmatched. However, if you take a closer look at Berkeley's roster and their season, you will find that they have severely underperformed in comparison to their talent level.
  • UC Berkeley is, without question, the nightmare team for Georgia Tech to face in the Ro16. Berkeley's star player, Silky (Z), is an overpowering force that even TheoRy will have trouble keeping up with. In addition, Berkeley also has powerful secondary pieces in Padre (P) and IntuitioN (P), both seasoned veterans who are able to turn it on when the stakes are high.
  • An interesting match to watch will be the 2v2. Georgia Tech is going with an unusual lineup of double Protoss, a combination that has not been played in the CSL by any team this year. If Georgia Tech doesn't win the 2v2, they might be looking at a 3-0 sweep.
  • Prediction: UC Berkeley 3-2 Georgia Tech.

Up next is Waterloo vs. UC Riverside, broadcasted April 3rd at 7 PM PDT!
  • Waterloo (7-1) is obviously a top dog in the CSL, the only team able to field a lineup of 4 Grandmaster players. Coming in as the top seed, they are looking make a statement and show why they are so heavily favoured in this matchup.
  • UCR (2-6) is simply just glad to be here. After a disappointing regular season culminating in a 4 match losing streak, they were given new life when a higher ranked team had to forfeit their playoff spot due to other commitments.
  • For Waterloo, the player to watch will be Buster (T). Buster, a CSL veteran with a sterling match record, will be looking to help end UCR's run quickly as he is fielded in both map 1 and map 3 (the 2v2 game). Buster is so powerful that he has been known to defeat two players on his own in 2v2 matches after his teammate dies.
  • Although UCR is the weaker team overall, they do have a wildcard in intense (T). intense is a former semi-pro who spent time playing for ROOT, IvD, PSISTORM, and mYinsanity among others. He will likely be fielded in sets 4 and 5 if his team gets there, but that will be difficult given the strength of the Waterloo team.
  • If intense gets the chance to play, he would still have to face Waterloo's ace player, THERIDDLER (T). Although intense is a strong player, it would still be a tough road ahead for him to take two games off THERIDDLER.
  • Prediction: Waterloo 3-0 UC Riverside.

Up next is SFU vs UCSD, broadcasted April 5th at 7 PM PDT!
  • SFU (2-5) is an interesting school in the CSL. Although their student population of under 35,000 makes it one of the smaller schools in CSL, they might actually be the only school in North America to have an official Starcraft Club.
  • At the beginning of the season, SFU was considered an extremely weak team in the CSL with hardly any players that had made it past Diamond league. However, over the course of the season they have been able to recruit stronger players and train players internally to the point where they are able to send out a reasonably formidable lineup.
  • UCSD (7-1) is an up-and-coming team in the CSL, looking to move on to the Round-of-8 for the first time in the Starcraft 2 era.
  • UCSD's core consists of three young Grandmasters in Flume (P), Liqht (Z), and DragonGod (P). Flume and Liqht are both sophomores who helped keep UCSD relevant last season. DragonGod, a freshman, might be the best player out of the three; his addition this season has made UCSD into one of the best teams in the CSL. With such a young group, they are poised to be one of the best collegiate SC2 teams for years to come.
  • SFU's lineup for this match is a lot deeper than usual, but they will still have trouble against UCSD. They will rely on cheesy Protoss Daydreamer as well as SCGenX (Z) to try to make an upset happen.
  • Prediction: UC San Diego 3-2 SFU.

Waterloo certainly has a great shot.

UOIT did well, they had a chance but barely came up short. If Jason was more comfortable with taking it to lategame, he might have been able to win against Suppy.

The last match of the Round of 16 will be the closest one yet: Washington vs Chicago!
  • University of Washington (7-1) has a lot of history in the CSL, culminating in a championship in the 2014-2015 season. However, they have not been able to replicate their success since then, likely due to the graduation of their former ace player, CSL all-time-great KawaiiRice. In the past two years, they have had trouble against high-powered teams like Temple and Waterloo who have eliminated them from the playoffs.
  • Washington has had a great season so far, mainly due to their up-and-coming freshman, LambSauce (Z). LambSauce has a 12-1 map score this season, including a win against Chicago's ace player, omgabanana (P). Due to LambSauce's amazing play, Washington was able to defeat Chicago 3-0 earlier this season.
  • Washington also benefits from having veteran players Zeal (P) and GarageDoor (T), who were both part of the 2015 championship team. Zeal is a former WCS player who will still be relied on to be the ace player, while GarageDoor is an experienced 2v2 veteran who provides stability to that matchup.
  • University of Chicago (4-4) is a great team, but they have not had a great season because of certain poor decisions with their lineups in previous matches. Because of this, they are facing a tough opponent in the first round.
  • Chicago has an advantage in omgabanana (P), who is most likely the best player in this series. However, the lineup draw has been terrible for Chicago: omgabanana will face the weakest player on the other team, and Chicago is in danger of dropping all three of the maps where omgabanana is not playing.
  • The most important set will be map 1, where LambSauce will try to start things off with a win against Teletubby (T). Although LambSauce looks stronger, a well-prepared strategy by Teletubby could shift the series into Chicago's favour.
  • Prediction: Washington 3-1 Chicago.
