I think it's like mines vs. tanks. One big burst of damage which can be mitigated by good splits, or lower but more constant and reliable damage.

Tanks, similar to Roaches, also look sweeter and feel more fun to use. I always get a tingling sensation when I build Roaches.

I enjoy watching Tanks and Roaches more as well. Like it's more static but I like the positioning better than the splitting.

I think as a zerg you really have to play more timing oriented when you go roaches: 1-1 push, 2-2 push, etc. It's probably a bit less solid overall than Muta/Ling/Bane, but it can be still be verey effective. It's also a good way to vary things up in a boX format.
