If you translate that to foreigner terms, he's top 3 foreigner for the last year.

Morrow got outplayed, wasn't able to do enough damage while delaying his third. Hydra was able to drone up behind small bits of aggression, started flooding ling bane and won.
MorroW got an advantageous position thanks to the messed up wall and transformed that into a victory with style. I doubt Hydra will make that kind of mistake again though and he should win map 3 in a pretty straightforward way.
I feel like hydra is extremely complacent against foreigners. Starts off terribly and eventually turns it on midway through the game. I remember a few games he had in challenger and the qualifiers where he would fall behind and just keep in the game through superior play in the midgame. Seems like it's not going to work out in this game though.
Hydra should still get through if he doesn't take his next two series too lightly, but man, what an upset. The winner of Showtime vs iAsonu could be really unsettled by that unexpected opportunity to go through 1st place.

Didn't he recently destroy Cure and run through the IEM qualifier bracket? Hydra just seems like he's either complacent or saving his best play for better competition.

To be fair, Cure was playing with high ping from Korea and was like half asleep because he went through every IEM qualifier that say (he move-commanded his army into banelings more than once). But yes, Hydra can play better than that.

I was still waiting to see what was Hydra's level before stating that ForGG was the favourite. Now it's clearer than ever. I don't see anyone taking a Bo5+ from him. In fact I'm slightly more scared about the Ro16 than the playoffs because of the higher volatility of Bo3s.
Anyway, I'm pretty confident he'll win Season 1. IN FRANCE !

Snute can be a threat to ForGG. With Polt's current form, I'd say Snute and ForGG seem to be the biggest contenders. I wouldn't count Hydra out just yet, everyone can have an unfortunate series, and I would still mention that Serral and MaNa impressed me a lot.

For me it is ForGG 40% Winchance over all, 20% for Polt and the rest for the foreigners. After I saw Hydra in challanger i did not think that Hydra will take the Season 1.

Snute got utterly destroyed the last times they met, it wasn't even close, same for Polt. I mean, it could happen, they played before Snute used swarm hosts in ZvT but it's far from likely.

Ahahah I meant Kaelaris of course and then I must have imagine hair...
Showtime used to be a big fan of phoenix openers in PvZ. This style that I'm still a big fan of has fallen out of grace quite a lot lately with the crowning of blink +2, and I wonder if we're going to see it in at least one game.

I'd be quite disappointed to see nothing but blink openers or oracle into blink, but we'll see.

To be fair, both Cure and Fantasy showed how to exploit the SH vs Bio TvZ in the IEM qualifiers.

Yes, in straight-up games, he played better.
well the second one wasn't that straight up but ok that's an upset
Yeah it wasn't so straightforward, if the wall is tight when the hellions try to run by Hydra is in an OK spot.
Well Hydra started it with the Roach push, you can't fault Morrow for making the most of that.
I mean I think Hydra thought his wall was tight but misplaced the evolution chambers (he had queens on hold on the south part). Silly mistake, but a costly one.

IN FRANCE !

Snute vs Fantasy was on Inferno Pools right? That showed how you can exploit Snute's style because he delays his mutas a lot and the SH are very immobile.

Had Aligulac predict all possible matches, Welmu vs HuK is a coin toss, iaguz is favored against MacSed, HuK and Welmu are favored against MacSed and iaguz. So the Aligulac prediction would be 1. Welmu/HuK, 2. HuK/Welmu, 3. iaguz, 4. MacSed.

I think when Showtime went back a bit to regroup he just went into "YES! I defended!! let's attack!"-mode. Otherwise known as "Haha you think zergs can attack protoss after they won an attack, how cute"-mode.

Yep. iA must hate Protoss buildings or something... Showtime's really good though. That's why the German casters for the IEM qualifiers were really annoyed that he lost to CatZ, because he normally should beat him. So yeah, Showtime hype!

Well to be fair he didn't really defend, he overdroned as far as I was seeing and Showtime was just attacking at the wrong angle. So the mistake happened much earlier by not responding properly.
This studio is pretty ... weird, gotta admit. Forces them to stay super quiet and not say anything. Only way to make this worse would to have them directly next to each other.

The part were ShoWTime overextended horribly, lost a lot of stuff, defended his base with DTs that iA had no detection in place for and then the game ended with the Protoss having more bases. And yes, iA's horrible play with no hydra speed till 16 mins was also silly.

I agree that was silly. I even think that if iA moves his overseer over his hydra force in the main, he has a realistic shot at winning.

It's the Chinese meta to always do stuff without upgrades, clearly. Like against ShoWTime where he skipped hydra speed.
that was clearly a mistake though. here he went to the effort of contaminating hydra's +2, but surely he coulda clicked on his evo to see when his was done and fight with +2... he had a good 10 army supply extra so on even upgrades it was probably his best chance to win
On February 28 2015 10:50 TheLordofAwesome wrote: What is up with the banelings? I never watch ZvZ so is this a new thing?
The idea is that you use a shit ton of banelings and slightly less roaches to completely wipe out the opponents roaches once, and then be able to reproduce at the same rate. This is compared to just trading roaches for roaches almost evenly

Also clearly a mistake. Yes, that was the time he had a shot at winning but threw it away, although with defender's advantage and queens this wouldn't have been a stomp either way.

It's been around for awhile. Korean Zergs slowly got in to it as an alternative to roach + hydra/infestor to quickly end the game.
You tend to see it in more passive games or when one guy gets a decent lead. You even see Zergs do the spore cancel overmax to tack on even more roaches with the bane wave.

just seems like a really simple error to avoid. I never take a fight if I have an upgrade like 80%+ done, whether it's +3 attack or +1 shields... idk maybe he was nervous.

but it's true though. all you have to do is plonk a mine down and unless there are obs everywhere you will lose probes, and they do so much damage they can kill 7-8 probes easy.
and it's kinda hard to determine if/when they're coming since terran openings can look the same - you scout reactor factory and think mines, position to defend against drops, and then die to a hellbat push (for example).
oracles require micro, especially if there's a turret.

the widow mine is basically a swarm host with no range. and splash damage. and extra damage vs protoss. you just burrow and wait for the goodies - except in TvZ where they are used much more 'appropriately' as part of the army and tactically to zone out areas/create space etc. which I like.

Well, honestly it's hard to complain about a unit doing too much damage to your worker line just because you have no detection when you're Protoss. I love to make people with no detection suffer, and it doesn't require a lot of skill .

but it's true though. all you have to do is plonk a mine down and unless there are obs everywhere you will lose probes, and they do so much damage they can kill 7-8 probes easy.
and it's kinda hard to determine if/when they're coming since terran openings can look the same - you scout reactor factory and think mines, position to defend against drops, and then die to a hellbat push (for example).
oracles require micro, especially if there's a turret.
in fact pretty much every form of harass for every race requires effort and micro to execute.
the widow mine is basically a swarm host with no range. and splash damage. and extra damage vs protoss. you just burrow and wait for the goodies - except in TvZ where they are used much more 'appropriately' as part of the army and tactically to zone out areas/create space etc. which I like.
Well, honestly it's hard to complain about a unit doing too much damage to your worker line just because you have no detection when you're Protoss. I love to make people with no detection suffer, and it doesn't require a lot of skill .
1 base widow mine can come out before obs if you open anything other than gate-robo
it basically pigeonholes protoss into going straight for detection, either in the form of cannons or obs - the former takes minerals away from other uses, the latter takes gas and time that we would spend producing colossus.
besides, as Protoss I complain about DTs all the time

True, and believe me, I hate Widow Mines when they're used against me (and also in how they're harmful to my preferred pro-Templar, anti-Colossus styles), but when I'm watching pro-games, they are quite entertaining. The disadvantage that Widow Mines have over Dark Templar is that you can see and try to stop them on the way in, even if you have no detection. 'Course, that's easier said than done with turbovacs .

I don't think "good entertainment value" is justifiable as a reason for their unnecessary bonus vs Protoss.
It's especially hard when you have only a couple of stalkers in the early game and they just can't kill things fast enough. You literally have to be on point with your units and MSC or you will lose so much. Which may be okay for a lot of high level players, but for lesser skilled ones it isn't. To the point that practically every Terran I've played against from silver to diamond league goes for mine drops.
Apart from that one guy who did a 1 base thor rush with all SCVs pulled.

There was a PvP finals at an IEM about a week after they proposed the change, so it got instantly scrapped.

Lesser skilled protoss play against lesser skilled terrans who won't get as much out of their mine drops. It balances out. If it doesn't for you, then alter your build to counter mine drop play more than you're doing now.
Neat micro from MorroW. Not terribly convinced by that build though; hydra batted it aside fairly easily. I guess its not all bad since he got the third.

nah, that's very untrue I'm afraid. lesser skilled players will suffer a lot more because they can't deal with them. higher skilled players can maybe get like 5-6 kills. lesser skilled players can get as many as 20.

I agree. Widow mines like swarmhosts are asymmetric in skill level needed until it reaches a certain level. The terran only needs to be good at controlling the mines, if the Protoss is good at fighting them off.

That's not really accurate. Some strategies are more rewarding to lower skill players. Both sides being of proportionately lower skill doesn't mean that the balance will be similar.

but it's true though. all you have to do is plonk a mine down and unless there are obs everywhere you will lose probes, and they do so much damage they can kill 7-8 probes easy.
and it's kinda hard to determine if/when they're coming since terran openings can look the same - you scout reactor factory and think mines, position to defend against drops, and then die to a hellbat push (for example).
oracles require micro, especially if there's a turret.
in fact pretty much every form of harass for every race requires effort and micro to execute.
the widow mine is basically a swarm host with no range. and splash damage. and extra damage vs protoss. you just burrow and wait for the goodies - except in TvZ where they are used much more 'appropriately' as part of the army and tactically to zone out areas/create space etc. which I like.
Which may be okay for a lot of high level players, but for lesser skilled ones it isn't.
Lesser skilled protoss play against lesser skilled terrans who won't get as much out of their mine drops. It balances out. If it doesn't for you, then alter your build to counter mine drop play more than you're doing now.
That's not really accurate. Some strategies are more rewarding to lower skill players. Both sides being of proportionately lower skill doesn't mean that the balance will be similar.
Yeah balances out wasn't the right way to say that, I agree. But you don't have to be as efficient at defense to counter the mines of Joe94. Honestly the reason I'm arguing against you is that I've been opening DTs with a fast forge the whole time in diamond and I never had much trouble with drop mines, and trust me it's not because of my amazing skills.

I don't think you've been arguing with me, I've got very little relevant stuff to say about balance, given that I regularly Korean 4 Warpgate All-in players in Platinum. That build isn't supposed to have been viable since WoL beta. Some strategies just happen to work better at lower leagues. Back when I was getting friends interested in SC2 (This was back in WoL, before the Mothership Core) I'd always recommend they play Terran, because stim a-moving Marines is easier than learning to Forcefield yourself alive or knowing when to Drone and when to make combat units. Yet Masters level players here kept insisting that Terran was the hardest race to play.

again, I think you are wrong. you have to be next to flawless to defend the various widow mine timings, or you have to build a bunch of cannons early on which makes you vulnerable to a standard bio timing, or make a load of obs which slows down colossus - and either way you're forfeiting any ability to harass the terran.
it's the kind of strategy, like a DT rush or cloaked banshee rush or speedling all in that makes newer/lesser skilled players stop wanting to play the game. but it's not a one off cheese that happens 1 game out of 100, it happens almost every single TvP because of how effective it is and how lower league players will straight up die to it.
but ofc Blizz do not care about anything below masters 1v1 - they pay no attention to lower leagues or team games or anything. which is why less and less people are playing or caring about sc2. but whatever.

Balance just isn't universal, I don't think.
Mostly because it has different definitions depending on who you're talking to

gratz hydra showtime, too bad morrow couldn't finish first one game from advancing, but that's how this format works. one game between advancing first and going out third. still a great performance resultwise by morrow!
