If you do public performances in front of tens thousands of Chinese people who do not speak English every time you go there, you vacate there 5-6 times a year and your professional career is closely tied to how Chinese people perceive your performances; then I wouldn't consider it a bad idea to learn some basic Chinese, especially if you already had the very basics from school (though I wouldn't blame you for not learning it either).
