The new WCS America, now run by the North American Starleague (NASL), kicks off tonight starting with Group G. As it is rightful the man who ended the last WCS AM season by lifting the trophy, Liquid'HerO, will be playing the first game of the new Premier League season. HerO does not really require an introduction. Whether you're new to watching StarCraft 2 or a seasoned veteran, you've probably heard of HerO. He has been a torch for protoss through thick and thin, always hanging around at the top of the protoss ranks. His first opponent, EG.Oz.RC, is no stranger to standing in the protoss spotlight either as he was once considered the most solid protoss player in the world by many for a decently long time. Since this match will be a PvP, there is one thing that deserves a mention here - Oz' fall from grace towards the end of Wings of Liberty. The wonderful and powerful wizard made the costly mistake of calling the Protoss mirror a purely skill based one that had nothing to do with luck. Oz stated that he would play and beat anyone who thought otherwise. As it just had to happen he then entered the worst PvP form of his entire career and has ever since been looking for a way back to where he once was - the highest ranks of the Protoss race. Coupled with a solid Proleague record, this WCS America might just be what he's looking for.
- Have we met?
Oh yes, they have. Let the truth be dropped upon you. This group's ZvZ between Acer.Scarlett and ROOTViBE is a rematch of the 2012 WCS North America Finals. A real blast from the past, a different time when the Koreans had to slaughter each other in the brutal pit that was WCS Korea as there was nowhere else to go. Now, that of course makes both Scarlett and ViBE's route to the original final a lot less impressive than say HerO's was last season but don't let that deceive you. Both players tore through the 2012 version of WCS America, with Scarlett dropping a grand total of a single map and ViBE only surrendering to Scarlett, the eventual champion. Scarlett's impressive ZvZ proved too much to handle for ViBE back then as the Canadian version of Sarah Kerrigan took him out 4-0 in total. But hey, that was Wings of Liberty and this is not. ZvZ has gone a bunch of changes in HotS already, with mass roach midgame into eventual Swarmhosts currently looking to be the go to style. This series may just come down to whoever has a more solid grip on the volatile and rapidly evolving ZvZ matchup.
- Predictions!
HerO has to enter this group as a clear favorite. Not only is he the reigning WCS America champion but he has also been one of the hottest protoss players competing internationally. His PvZ has looked vastly improved recently and flashbacks of the classic HerOesque PvZ are occurring more frequently. Having defeated Scarlett 2-0 in convincing fashion last season and the zerg queen apparently not being comfortable against protoss (see her post in this thread), I don't know if either of the zergs in his group has what it takes to beat him if he performs to his standards. The match against Oz will be critical. The two protoss players are known to be good friends and now practice together in the EGTL house. As cliché as it sounds, there might just be mindgames in this one. Overall though, HerO's PvP has been a lot more stable than Oz' in HotS and HerO seems more on point right now. Scarlett's ZvZ has always been very good, even keeping up with the best in the world so this jump-in-writer favors her to take the series against ViBE. Where we go from there is up in the air. The simple and not very creative answer would be HerO going through in first place and the other three battling it out for the second spot.
HerO > Oz Scarlett > ViBE HerO > Scarlett ViBE < Oz Scarlett > Oz
Since TL probably won't do a preview for this since I don't believe they did for WCS AM last time (I could be remembering wrong) does someone want to take a crack at writing up an unofficial preview? I'll put it up in the OP. If no one does it I can always toss something together or just find something to put there.
I was hoping NASL would at least cast all of the Premier League. Nothing against the Blizzard casters, but Premier League is a bit out of their league.

Lemme channel my mighty writing skills. I did work at a local newspaper so look forward to that mad quality writing.

Protoss players have one weakness: they put their weight on their right leg whenever they're about to forcefield a choke. So what you do is sneak up on them like a burrowed roach, hamstring them and then their forcefields will be slightly off by about a hex or two and your lings should be able to exploit that weakness for the win. Hope this helps.

Kind of choked that there's no TL writeup for this (though Olli's does the job nicely). This has the potential to be AMAZING and deserves all the hype it can get! I have faith in the NASL guys and these four players

Definitely a billion times better than last season. 6 hour broadcasts were a little much when the other regions were doing it in 4 or less
I'm assuming they have somewhat longer breaks between matches than between sets, but this totally beats the massive breaks of tournaments like proleague and wcs kr.

every time there was a major battle in G3 an orcale went into hero's mineral line, and every time both the casters and the observers missed it. especially bad at the start when we see 2 oracles and the casters instantly forget about the 1st one. really screws up viewers perception of how the game is going.
or its all on purpose for more fake hype, i cant tell anymore.

i wish we could have an observer with more than 5 apm. if theres 2 fights on the map at the same time, only watching 1 of them is imo inexcusable. completely ruins things for the viewer.
Observer was circling it with his mouse, but he was trying to stay where the commentators were talking about. Also Scarlett just made one of the USA's finest look completely silly.

Especially when it is just a quite little runby against spawning reinforcements :-(
Ah well. Was pretty clear what would happen anyways.

Does vibe even play a lot? I swear I don't see him play sc2 much but then again he might be on a barcode.

to be fair, she's been doing that for a while. Remember WCS NA 2012?

im so glad i tuned in at 1am to watch a mouse circling a mini map. the transfuse and roach rally play was cute and somesomething worth seeing (good crisis management) but the casters werent even mentioning that anyway ;/. i remember 1 time i watched a game on daybreak in WoL where the observer actually flicked the camera around as fast as a pro does to watch all 3 fights on the map, i think it was a pro player casting. and it was still a very viewable experience, so since then i just cant accept slow moving observing.

He's in the team house, so according to the logic most people on TL employ that means that he must train pretty much 24/7.

I would guess that ViBE and the rest of the guys in the ROOT house have barcoded up and swapped accounts or whatever to hide builds. It's probably pretty easy to do when you're all together.
Finally WCS America feels like it's up to par with the rest of the Premiere leagues. I imagine the Ro16 will be awesome too once they are at the NASL studio.

she often keeps her army on a single hotkey, doesnt use camera hotkeys last time i checked, i dont think she uses the standard method of adding units to control groups which is adding the eggs before they hatch. things might have changed since she went to korea but her creep spread has always been top notch even when she slows herself down so much.

How does that make sense. If he lost and Hero won he could just as well have to play Scarlett anyway. Now at worst he has to play Hero again and only has to win one of these series.

That makes no sense. Your way he has to beat HerO in the last game which is asuming HerO loses to Scarlett (why that assumption? crazy talk)
Beating HerO first game, even if he loses to Scarlett (he's a favourite) will still have to beat HerO in the last game.

I don't get it. I understand playing to win. But why would Oz waste Scarlett's, the caster's, and everyone watching's time with just cheesing every game? It's unbelievable. So annoying and awful for the game.

Without cheese this game would be bad. Cheesing is completely necessary in this game. I hate when people whine about it. Its legitimate. Wasting everyone's time? Maybe you need to find a different game, SC2 is not for you.
HerO opens up stargate doing a ton of damage killing at least 13 drones taking a fast 3rd behind it. HerO starts teching up to colossus and ViBE tries a ling hydra counter attack. HerO holds with his gateway army and photon overcharge. ViBE starts going for a swarm host composition behind taking his 4th. HerO builds up a colossus void ray force while he continues to harass with his phoenixes. Hero goes up to 3 stargates to stop triple void production as ViBE techs to hive. HerO moves through the middle of the map before vipers are out forcing the swarm hosts to retreat. Vibe makes a stand at his 3rd and is able to push HerO out and take a 40 supply lead. ViBE continues to siege HerO's 4th with swarmhosts while colossi burn the locusts. both players expand behind the siege stalemate and split the map on 6 bases. HerO begins his warp prism harass but is unable to break through the swarm host line at the front. HerO cleans up the main of ViBE with zealots and DTs and starts making tempests. Vibe turns his siege to the newer expansions of HerO. Warp prism harass continues to kill bases of ViBE. HerO gets a mothership to defend against locusts easier. Stalemate lasts for a while Vibe gets a fungal all over the army of HerO and takes out a majority of the void rays. corruptors give chase and kill the mothership

wow Vibe suddenly went loco. But Ultras don't really care about Voidrays most of the time and they are fast enough to avoid it and they force instant charge otherwise the ground army is instant dead. Could be a problem if the toss is on your side of the map, but that will never happen.
I don't see why everyone is focusing solely on the Ultras and the swarm host lost, Vibe's defense against those DTs and Zealots warped into his base was pretty sub-par as well

I'm thinking the best course of action for HerO is just maxing out on the best possible army and pushing on max supply, because ViBE isn't going to build a significant army any time soon. HerO's small pokes might weaken the massive lead he currently occupies, so to take the safer path, just max out.

Yea, like 10+ Spines at the top-right base and none in his main with over 1000 minerals >_>.
It was actually nice to see that floating harbinger of spacetime manipulation, and after WoL I really never saw myself admitting that. I'd long thought in theory the cloak would lessen the slow chipping away of your forces that the locusts do and it does appear to work pretty well in that capacity.

They're significantly less frequent as far as I can personally remember. I mean the first clue that this map wasn't good should have been when Kespa decided to completely remake it. I know they're using the Kespa version but it still isn't THAT good.
I'd rather see daybreak 100x over than have this map stay in the pool

only because It's innovation, though, and that's pretty much the only time he's ever lost after being that ahead.
and Mvp did play really fucking amazingly.
I think Tefel was a bigger throw by far--if you don't take into account the skill of the players--does that need to be taken into account when measuring greatest throws?
well, i would have loved this game when one of these huge battles would have ended it but how it ended it was mehhhh... vibe had this and threw it, and in the end it just took too long for him leaving.

They can be fun too, I like most styles that aren't turtling behind static defenses and spawning free units. Actually that game wasn't even that terrible for the first half or so, just got a bit silly towards the end.
In terms of HerO's endgame composition (well, far before the actual END of the game) I think he screwed up a little bit. He seemed to me to make a few too many Oracles for Envisioning, could have done with some more meaty units.

I did get pretty angry just because ViBE threw away a game that he should have had pretty easy. That's only because it makes me feel the player I was rooting against does not yet deserve to win. =(
Aside from my player losing, that game was very entertaining.

random question, how come WCS AM wasn't going to open with the reigning champion? Both the other regions began with Soulkey and MVP but had Hero not had whatever scheduling conflict was talked about earlier he wouldn't have been first

How do they choose the groups anyway? I thought that it was more or less randomized.

Like who gets what letter or who was in who's group? Pretty sure the other regions at least A was previous winner, B was previous runner up, C/D had the 3rd/4th and ect. Then the groups were someone who came in 1st in up and downs, someone in second, and someone from groups randomly. I think the lowest seed (like for example Oz today) were the people who came in 2nd. in up and down group
nvm I am right, I forgot Hero/Oz was the first match of the day
I have a horrible confession. I was accidentally napping during the Scarlett vs Oz series. That must be why she lost. Now that I'm awake all should be well.
Besides, Scarlett gets a 20% Buff against anyone who can claim the title of "WCS American Champion", couple that with Hero lacking the winter buff and I think it's clear to see Scarlett will win this.

No, I meant for the stream. Teamliquid hasn't given me any problems.

Wow why would you do that to Scarlett at such a critical time? Thats pretty awful, man.

No, the lettering of the groups.
Then yea refer to the beginning, pretty sure the other two regions game champion A, runner up B, 3rd/4th C/D, 5th/6th (as they are actually a thing now), E/F and then 7th and 8th G/H
AM, much like the rest of the stuff they do, just seems random as fuck
EDIT, apparently only Korea does it the way I mentioned. EU gave champ A and runner up B and then said fuck it, AM didn't even do that

Wait, I have TL+ but I still get ads, including the add that crashes the stream (open it directly from twitch to not get that add Templar). How do I turn ads off with TL+?
hmm the question is: she sees the whole army moving out at the watchtower, all her infestors are burrowed at this moment. then her ling dies at the watchtower and she walks back with her whole army but she unburrows the infestors when she walks home. the question now is whyyy would you unburrow your infestors? i dont quite understand

TL + does not prevent twitch ads. That requires Turbo!

Nope. If long games (30-50 minutes) were typical, I think we'd be able to do a lot of things with SC2. Things would have a lot more hype and SC2 would be able to get a lot more popular. In that scenario, a 1 hour game wouldn't really be "atypical"

Might have been a mistake, but don't infestors move faster unburrowed? She probably wanted to get them back quick.

Maybe she shouldn't go 10 pool into two base infestor into fast +3 attack and ultras and take a fourth base while moving out on the map with her infestors.

ah mb now i understand hero had an oracle and probably she had seen it and oracle would ahve revealed the infestors anyways, then it makes sense, good timing by hero anyway a bit unfortunate though for scarlett being in the middle of the map

Well played Scarlett, smart play there in that game. Still mad and sad but tbh I do feel Scarlett is one of the stronger foreign players who got pretty unlucky with brackets last time around so hopefully can see a run for her

Amazing PvZ there. Scarlett tries to hide banelings in the corner of Hero's base multiple times but Hero is too smart for that. Burrowed lings that were later on morphed however.... SICK.

INnoVation has only been in Code S for 3 seasons. He can be considered consistent after he's been there as long as Symbol has.
Symbol alongside violet are probably the two most consistent players, ever since they both got big at the start of 2012 there's never really been a moment where those two have fallen off the high tier.

Yes, very impressive. The second corner-morphed banelings were a distraction- sick mindgames.
HerO is so good too, just needed more warp prism play.

Oh dear. Did you see the FF when that second bunch of lings got in? Somebody check up on HerO immediately.

Because violet's personality can sometimes take a bit of effort to see and by large he just turns up, kills a few big names and finishes high and runs into the night just as fast whenever he appears, he's not really the single most remarkable player but he's like the definition of high tier.

10pool was because I thought he would do sOs's belshir cannon (i havent practiced 10pool zvp and know he does the zealot start -> cancel which is why i held my lings back, but didnt know exact timing so that didnt work out :/ )
14/14 was for speedling into burrow to kill a gateway expand, wasnt sure what to do when he cannoned me ( thought he wouldnt after doing to vibe )

Bitterdam thought they were both build order counters, but I guess they were counters for different builds lol
If he had done the sOs cannon rush, do you run lings to his base or do you try to prevent the cannon rush?
Your 14/14 looked like a counter to HerO's cannon rush at first actually, but the lings were already too late to get to HerO's base. It looked like you would have won with the baneling bust if you had reinforced with lings too

I definately didn't play the game on akilon out optimally yea;; me and hero's nerves were both shot and the lag from kr->na was bad today
vs the sOs cannon you just run into his base and win (their probe goes a diff direction from the lings so they wont see until too late)
