You have multiple qualifiers because double elim is not really feasable with so many players. And telling a player to wait four more months because he failed in one bo3 is kind of meh...
This way, everybody has four shots. If the player cannot make it in the four tries, he/she really cannot blame luck. In the end, you might say it's keeping the luck factor as small as possible.

I for one am enjoying the qualifiers, it is a good way to gauge the up&comers of Europe. Not many of them play very often in a serious tournament environment beyond weekly cups. And I'd say they take this more serious than weekly cups.
