Format
This double-elimination tournament features 24 teams from around the world and is an All-Kill team format. This match is being played for Losers Round 4. The first team to defeat everyone on the opposing team's roster (5 wins, or a best of 9), will move on in the Losers Bracket, while the loser will be eliminated entirely. Keep in mind that this has a $20,000 prize pool, and only six teams will make it to the money!

Symbol is ace of TSL. Acer need to beat Polt, after that Symbol.
This series is basically going to depend on how well Nerchio and Bly can play (No offence to the other Acer players, but these are the two I see as the biggest threats to TSL), especially in ZvZ and ZvT. Symbol and Polt are going to be the biggest obstacles to Acer, and if Acer can eliminate them, they have a good chance of winning. However, I think with simply the amount of good to great players on TSL compared to Acer, they have the better shot of winning. I think it will either be 5-2 or 5-3.
Interesting putting Nerchio up first, If he can take out Revival and Symbol he has a shot at getting an allkill, Bly is a great ZvP sniper and I'm intrigued to see how Scarlett'll do. Should be a fun match.
It's Paranoid as well doing the damage in TAC, not Bly. I don't remember Bly doing anything at all. Not sure how you can make a case for anyone apart from Nerchio favourites in ZvZ against Hyun, Symbol, Ragnarock, Revival.

He has a really good ZvZ reputation. People in europe are scared of playing him in this match up, and that feel help a ton.

How do you know and why are you spoiling stuff for others?
It's not a secret, it was strongly hinted in the predictions, I also saw her posting about that in some Acer-related thread. But sorry if I spoiled it for someone, will edit my post quick.

Oh definitely, it's insanely similar play. I'd imagine as he gets more and more skilled he'll fork off into his own playstyle while maintaining all of the prior knowledge Polt has given him, same thing happened to Happy, used to look like a mini-MVP, now he has one of the most unique playstyles in KR despite the fact that you can really tell he's been given a lot of knowledge by His greatness.
edit: wow TSL not fucking around, dropping Revival this early against a vZ team means they really respect Nerchio.

Well, Revival and Hyun should know Nerchio very well from all the weekly/monthly cups they play.

If I remember correctly, nerchio also knocked hyun out from Dreamhack:Stockholm
Revival's income has been so much better for so long but his army keeps running into concaves. Doa and Kevin didn't make a big deal of it, but it was an early fight where Revival tried to draw some fungals with a small fore of roaches moving in first and Nerchio just didn't fall for it and fungaled half of Revival's army when it eventually moved in afterwards.
Revival had much better infestor retention than Nerchio. Every big fight, even though Nerchio wins them except the last one, Nerchio loses the majority of his infestors. Also Revival did much better at harassing his opponent. WP Revival.

This game? Revival has almost always had great ZvZ and it is no fluke that he beat Nerchio. I think the 4 top zergs on TSL are all likely better than Nerchio in fact.
On July 11 2012 09:06 ssg wrote: Dumb to use Nerchio first.
That's what I thought. Sending out ParanOid or Bly first seems like it would make the most sense. When you have a team with a deep roster, then you can do stuff like sending your biggest names out first to get your team a huge lead, but when you have one player who is as good as TSL's line-up, you can't just throw him away.

Symbol is fo sho, but I think that overall Nerchio is probably about as good as RevivaL, Shine, or HyuN. That being said, that might just be me being really impressed since Nerchio's HSCV performance.
lol, interesting fact, I thought I've seen these guys play each other in EU dailies, they are 11-11 in the past 22 games, no record of anything else in TLPD but I'd imagine they're more games.
... holy shit. This is the first time I've ever seen ultras actually be good, as opposed to killing an opponent that could have been killed with something else just as easily.

If there is one thing I've learned from movies, it's that as long as you believe in yourself, you can do anything, even overcome fungals. Clearly the ultralisk is doing something right in that regard, and all the other units can use some more self-confidence :p
The Legend of Scarlett lives! So afraid she was going to be a one-hit wonder. Nice!
TSL is playing right into her hands too... she's better with the longer macro games, and they're playing super safe on the theory foreigners can't compete in the late game micro battles.

She was pretty good at IPL4 -- without a team to practice with, without a country that has a huge SC2 community, and as a pretty young person.
Now she's on a team with Nerchio, who knows a thing or two about ling/bane control (along with 2347293 other zergs). Won't be surprised at all if she gets quite a bit better now that she has folks to learn from.
Sending Inori mean only 1more player for TSL, so either Symbol or Polt. Probably Symbol I guess. Polt has never been that great in teamleague actually.

Inori isn't a weak player in ZvP, he's beaten Stephano in some decent macro games, so he is capable of beating Scarlett.
At which event was that? Are there vods? I would love to see those,
MLG open bracket no vods i think
Ah the games in the openbracket, where he eliminated Stephano and Idra beat Inori afterwards? Yeah I don't think there are vods from those then, but I heard they were really stupid all ins anyways with Inori completly blind countering Stephano.

Just tuned in, why is this even Close??? TSL should have won this by now. They're the much stronger team. I don't think I missed much though. four ZvZs in a row :p
I don't see what Inori expected to happen in this game, he did absolutely zero early damage and didn't quickly get any good tech. That fleet beacon was so insanely late.
Edit: Well Inori's lategame army wasn't very good, but Scarlett has taken out 3 code A/B players now right? Regardless of how they play, it's still pretty impressive.

This could actually be bad for Scarlett. All the other Koreans got suckered into macro games, her forte. I see Polt putting some serious pressure on this game. A true test.

Polt's standard play vs. Zerg is macro mode...
But yeah, GO Scarlett! Show them why you're the best NA Zerg :D

Been a VERY VERY long time since Polt all ined a TvZ.
It sounds really bad and sucks to harp on it but I can't believe a strong team didn't pick her up. Why no EG or Fnatic or Mouz? I feel her awesome talent is wasted on a small team like Acer but maybe she is training and will switch in a few months.

She does seem pretty vulnerable to blue flame. The Kas showmatch comes to mind.

She's still too unproven for teams like that to pick her up, especially since she really wants to go to Korea. SirScoots said he needs more results to judge a player, Mouz didn't even want to support Thorzain staying in Korea... I don't know about Fnatic, but I'd guess it's for similar reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised if she started practicing hard vs mech as a direct result of that showmatch, to be honest.

Acer isn't a terrible team. Nerchio is one of the best Zergs outside Korea, and he could teach her a lot.

So because of some potential and a few wins against pretty good players Scarlett would be too good for a team like Acer...
I mean Scarlett seems solid, but this hype is just stupid.

Nothing wrong with Acer. It's a step up from Eclypsia and it has excellent Zergs for her to train with.
I don't know about banelings... I still think roaches are a better option against this sort of aggression. Yeah, he has marauders, but marauders aren't that great without medivacs.
Gaining map control vs. brood lords isn't that hard, which is why ultras are preferred by a lot of Zergs. But Scarlett was way behind and was depending on brood lords to be a defensive tech that Polt fails to prepare for.
This is really the best example of why TvZ pisses me off. Although Polt has been manhandling Scarlett, she's still in the game and it only requires 1 mistake and she could even win.
I don't understand why Polt put off anti air production for, what, 10 minutes? He was able to control the map well, but I think he was way too confident to put off that viking production.
Wow, even though she's not gonna win this Scarlett is playing just SOOOO well! She kind of reminds me of IdrA except minus the giving up. And she's just started! Really awesome to see.

Amazing play from Scarlett overall though... although I can't believe Symbol wasn't eventually fielded for a guaranteed win. This match is way too close, and it'd be embarrassing if TSL lost.

Scarlett didn't win, but she played pretty well. Better drop defense and she could have actually completed that comeback. She had such a large number of infestors that she could have left 2 or 3 at home.
Also, she spotted that 3 medivac drop that killed everything sooooo long before it hit. If she'd had 30 lings there, she could have defended I think. (Not as much supply worth, but could take down marines as they land.

Why? He played that game in a map control, econ denial/drop based play. That strategy isn't meant to just roll into the zerg base an kill them, especially not with how well Zerg turtles lategame.
I believe Polt has a 100% win ratio on this map, so let's see if he can continue that streak. Shouldn't be too difficult with a relatively unexperienced foreign Terran.

It's very hard to play like that, because if you play too safe, you can let the zerg player getting back into the game. You need to put just enough pressure to not give them this opportunity.
And every drop getting unoticed helped that a lot tbh.

The real problem I have with Scarlett and her fans is that Polt just played an incredible game in a match-up where Terrans have been struggling a ton. I dont agree with him at all so I dont mean to sound like I'm defending him but if your claim is that Polt's slumping and ZvT is broken, a GSL win a year ago doesnt seem to matter much.
Lol CatsPajamas is overhyping that hold... you just pull SCVs to repair the tank and it's a pretty obvious hold. Polt came reaaally close to screwing that up, though.

If you don't know who revival is you don't know what a good player is.
Acer did pull one hell of a game though, and I applaud Scarlett for impressing the hell out of me; taking out three GSL worthy players (Well, maybe not Cyrano) and playing her heart out for her team, and nearly made it a win for Acer.

Unbelievable when you think about it. Acer doesn't really have any superstar foreigners other than Nerchio. If this had been GSTL though, I doubt it would be that close.
Yay for TSL! I still cannot understand why on earth they would try to play two macro PvZs in a row but it's good to see that once they stopped doing dumb stuff Polt managed to pull out a couple of wins including a really impressive win against Scarlett. Polt's TvZ is super gosu, I love that crazy drop/expo everywhere TvZ style.
Haha I love CatsPajamas! He may have overhyped the hold a little bit, but soo much better to overhype then underhype something like that. He is quickly becoming one of my fav casters. Him and Apollo need to team up for a cast :D
Now if Acer had a capable Protoss or two and another terran they would actually be seen as a top european team. Still an amazingly surprising showing in the tournament. I'm sad to see them go out especially after the performance Scarlet put up.
That was very close. I thought Polt would hold that for sure, but if Hydra had built 2 Marauders to targetfire vikings/tanks instead of 1 reaper (at least i think thats what the buildtime would allow, not 100% sure), or shot the tank a bit faster he would have had that.
Great fake of a reaper expand in any case and nice try :D

Everyone knows Polt plays like a boss. Thats why he and Stephano are basically 50-50, in addition to his winning a GSL (I'm sure someone will correct me on the vStephano win rate). Scarlett has only shown up two or three times and played like a champ each time. Plus she's Canadian. Plus she's female. Plus she's lgbT.

Unbelievable when you think about it. Acer doesn't really have any superstar foreigners other than Nerchio. If this had been GSTL though, I doubt it would be that close.
Oh of course. Korean teams prepare extensively for GSTL, and they really exploit every weakness. Just look at Liquid. They did pretty well in the IPL TAC, won the NASL teamleague, then they go off to the GSTL and get absolutely wrecked in the live setting.

TSL almost messed up their chances by trying to play macro PvZ. I feel like I have not seen that style of just sitting back and trying to just constantly expand work in PvZ recently. Maybe I'm wrong but if you are going to play two Protoss players in a row, it just seems like doing some sort of 2 base Robo/Gateway timing attack would be good to do. Zergs have been dying left and right to that stuff. Plus they really should have played Symbol if they actually wanted to take this seriously.

Great fake of a reaper expand in any case and nice try :D
I missed the earlier games before scarlet came in, how did Bly and Nerchio loose?
Nerchio lost a long back and forth roach infestor ZvZ against Revival (I think almost 40 minutes) and Bly lost to Revival as well in a base trade where Revival clearly had the much better army after Revival had gained an advantage in the mid-game muta wars.
The real problem I have with Scarlett and her fans is that Polt just played an incredible game in a match-up where Terrans have been struggling a ton. Scarlett did not play particularly well where as Polt was completely dominant the entire game (even when she was pushing and trading with Polt, Polt was rebuilding and she was not). Scarlett is actually quite better than idra currently. And she is a woman to boot. Scarlett will be the sc2 equivalent of TossGirl.

Its because scarlett is a new player to the scene, and stomped over 3 Korean pros in this series, and yes because she is a girl ( no quote marks needed)

I believe it's now 15-13 after MLG Spring Championship.
I think Coach Lee made a huge blunder by having Cyrano play instead of Inori first to test Scarlett's ZvP mettle, especially when they knew she was training with some top tier Zergs. Also, the TSL Protosses should have just all-ined at least, because the way Scarlett plays late game ZvP is basically invincible. Beyond some questionable decisions, I think TSL played fairly well, especially Revival, and to a certain degree, Polt.

Inori just played really really odd. So what was that - he picks a big map, does a late 4gate pressure no robo into 3rd nexus? What is that. Center and Cyrano wouldn't even be considered for GSTL and they didn't even have something different prepared like DarkHydra did vs Polt. It just feels like coach Lee forgot this was scheduled and looked and round thinking "Oh shit, Symbol and Hyun are at the beach".

Cyrano shows really good games in-house and that's why he was played before Inori.
Unfortunately Cyrano's play probably works better against Koreans, not foreigners and it probably led to him mis-reading some of the plays. He just doesn't have much experience vs Foreigners.

Ya I agree. Amazing job by Scarlett, making this match up surprisingly close.

You make it sound like I put him down personally and somehow insulted his casting or something. I just felt like he was overhyping it. There are times when he gets excited about good plays and I agree with it. This time, I happened to disagree, simple as that. Disagreeing with how amazing a play was =/= bringing him down because he's excited about what he's doing.

Not to take anything away from Scarlett though. Talk about an incredible performance. I really don't see how people can doubt her as a true rising star in the North American scene.

It was an amazing series of events. Not amazing play, because the repair was late, but the tank had 10HP left and had Polt repaired any later he would have lost. Pretty tense and exciting even though Polt should have repaired sooner.

To be fair to pajama's detractors he does come off as really fake if you have even a semi-decent bullshit detector. He overhypes, lacks analytical prowess and isn't very knowledgable about many of the foreign teams despite it being his job. I don't mind DoA but I think IPL could do a whole lot better with someone other than Mr Pajamas as their primary caster. Even HD and Painuser were better.. Speaking of that duo, whatever happened to them? I have not seen them do any content since IPL 3.

I also really like doa/cats, which is why I watch IPL every time it's on.
You can't have two analytical casters or two casters butting heads with their game knowledge. That is what happens sometimes with Wolf and Khaldor, they still have this tendency of interrupting each other when talking about the game (I still like them though). DoA is the one with game knowledge, while Cats' main purpose is to hype the game and make it sound exciting.

lol HD and Painuser were impossible to listen to because HD was basically a shout-caster and only did play-by-plays, which is fine if you pair him with somebody analytic like say Idra, but Painuser was pretty much the same, with similar game knowledge. I remember during IPL4, they bungled a lot of pretty easy calls. Also doesn't help that they get super excited a LOT and basically hype everything up.

Come on don't you know anything about the US? Anything we claim as ours shall be ours! Manifest Destiny doesn't just pertain to this side of the globe anymore!
Not saying HD and painuser were phenomenal, but I preferred them to Pajamas. For reference my favourite casters are apollo, artosis and khaldor. Those three are far and away the best the industry has to offer right now in my opinion.
I can understand your opinion, it didn't irritate me, but I thought what he hyped at the last game was a bit unexciting and anticlimatic. I love Kevin Knocke*, he's one of my top top favorites after Apollo, Artosis and Doa, it just happens to make casting mistakes. I'm forgiving on that. I had the same thoughts about Day9 today on the TSL qualifier EU/NA 9's finals, where it looked like he almost lost his voice, but these guys still perform well.

I like the Doa/CatsPajamas duo. They may not be the most knowledgeable but they're nice to listen to and have excellent synergy.
