You moron!
I agree Duran. I should have paid more attention to the timing of this tournament. For all the effort I put into RTS games, it was really disappointing not to be in proper shape for this tournament.
I hope that blizzard or MLG host a Canadian event, I will make sure I'm prepared for the next opportunity. : )

I think he means that everyone knows you're a massive cheeser anyway. You really don't need too much practice to play your normal style.

I think this one will probably work out better than mlg because both tournaments are smaller. Also, huk is the only one who'll be pulling double duty plus there's no open bracket to play through for NASL so I'm thinking he'll be less fatigued by the tournaments too.

I don't know about that. I've played you a few times and you have always done a pure cheese build. It's all fun on the ladder but it really doesn't do anything for you in terms of competing with actual good players.
On July 10 2012 00:47 KoDo wrote: bottom 4th of the bracket seems relatively easy does it not?
Yeah it does. Seems like Ddoro should win it. While the 2nd 4th of the bracket probably has 3 of the top 5 Canadians in it.
I was thinking the same thing. Realistically, Huk has to be a the favorite to win still, but the path he got isn't doing him any favors. TubbyTheFat (who Huk lost to in one of the MLG qualifiers), Scarlett, and Ostojiy all as potential matchups just to get to the Winner Semifinals.
Is there a schedule and players list that is good for printing? This would be for people attending the event in person. As I remember, NASL stays fairly close to its schedule in the past.
I think it should be fine considering it's only the RO8 for NASL. That means that the only overlap in player schedules is for HuK, and really they needed something like WCS to add some meat to it anyway.
I think this is an absolutely fine way to do it.
And I am SO STOKED for it.
HUK SCARLETT TT1 STALIFE DIME AND MKENGYN FIGHTING!!!!!! (Edit: oh, and also Slush!)
Edit: Well, also Drewbie. And Jecho has been doing well in TSL lately, and I always enjoy seeing TubbyTheFat's name in the MLG brackets... God damn we got a lot of skilled players in this great land. Canada is gonna murder US in the Continental Tournament, quote me. (Well, admittedly Sheth and Idra will be a challenge. I think the rest are around equal with our elite)
Huk's lost to TubbytheFat before in the 2012 MLG Spring Arena #2 qualifiers (BO3). And that's the first round game, followed by probably Scarlett... and he'll probably play Ostojiy as his next match.
Was this bracket randomly generated? #notrandomenough

I'd bet my left nut that HuK doesn't lose to TubbyTheFat this time, in light of his preparation for his NASL bracket which is likely to be quite a lot of PvP
Hey guys, you made a mistake with the Magic vs Zergling match
The MaGiC linked is not the same Magic that will has qualified for the tournament it is the wrong TLPD he also does not play terran, might want to fix that

I see your left nut and I raise you my prostate that Tubby wins this. At very least I think tubby is the favorite here. HUK's pvp is a broken cheesefest and tubby is a smart player.

Wow... mediocre at best play from both of them. Unrefined from TT1 missed his timing by >30 sec but sad for Jecho who was at 144 supply for a whole 30 sec before realising and building 6 overlords. Got tunnel visioned hard.

Didn't realise that!! I was kinda harsh but the bloody GSL raises a viewer's expectations from players too high...

Is it just me or has HuK used the same PvZ strategy for the last 6 months or so? I don't know if he just underestimated Scarlett or if he actually believes that type of play works.

Almost nothing about HuK's play has changed in the last 6 months.
Very well played by Scarlett... I definitely wasn't expecting her to 2-0 HuK (I was guessing it would probably go 2-1 either way). I wouldn't be surprised if she took this tournament. ^_^

Game 2: Similar strategies, but this time Huk made sentries and transitioned into HT-zealot-archon with feedback but no storm He was getting starved so he pushed out with workers in his army but died from lack of AoE damage and stuff in general.
I missed the openers of both games by weird co-incidence, so I'm not sure on those.

So after LR3 we'll have our top 12 and after LR4 we'll have top 8. But the tournament seeds 10 players to the NA Championships. How will they go about determining the which of placers 9-12 get those two seeds? Playoff?

yes PLyoff will be played to find out who gets to go to NA finals that should be intense
poor attero, must be really out of practice. Hes a guy I've seen on a bunch of occasions beat koreans in ESL and online tournies. But that game was ugly.
So how do they figure out which of the top twelve are in the top ten? (IE, we know who the top twelve are now, and soon we will know the top eight... but doesn't that still mean there needs to be tiebreakers for the four players that don't enter the RO8?)

Pretty much. Let's see how they do it in the China WCS tonight, same situation and Artosimpson said something along those lines aswell.
So we got the Top4: Drewbie, Scarlett, DDE, Ddoro
And winners of Attero/Magic Ostojiy/Tubby TT1/HuK Stalife/AndA
And the losers of those last matches would playoff once more for spots.
jEcho is out T___T lost to Huk 2-1 after an intense baneling bust that succeeded, but fumbled through the rest of the game as it evend out, before HuK overtook him.
Seeing Stalife advance so far is a sight for sore eyes. I'm glad to see him come back after so long. I think he took a break for awhile. Either way, I hope that this starts a long run of good results.

Possibly had no intention of going to the NA championships and didn't want to take a spot from HuK in addition to needing to be somewhere.
Whatever happened, I'm glad Huk got through. He's been having such a rough time lately. It was hard to watch him after the Alicia games, so devastated Best of luck to him in getting back on form!
Gotta say, I'm really like the odds of Team Canada in the continental finals. I'd put pretty good money that overall Canadians do better than Americans there.
Illusion, Vibe, and Sheth are the only real threats there I'd say.

Sheth isn't even in the NA finals so there's that going for Canada.
Mmm according to LP then HuK is not yet through because the consolation bracket for 9-10th place would be yet another double elimination, makes sense somehow i guess. Even with AnDa had to forfeit he still could get 11th.

Maker could probably make it too, so that's two Terran
HuK was really on tilt after losing to TubbyTheFat. Understandably, losing to two cannon rushes (and holding a proxy two gate) is rough... Still really glad HuK managed to qualify for the North American finals
(Also, I told HuK's dad that he was through to the NA finals after he beat JEcho, only to realize like five minutes later that he was top-12, not top-8. Would have felt really, really bad about that if he actually hadn't qualified for WCS in the end. So, thanks HuK ^^ )

Ddoro was placed into the easiest bracket of the tourny.. he is going to get 2-0d by scarlett 100%
Well if there is a chance Scarlett doesn't win it all it is probably going to be because of Ostojiy. He might have lost, but he looked pretty darn good against Scarlett. In other words GOGO TT1!

And only a few weeks ago, I saw a ton of players complaining that Scarlett only gained attention for being female and transgender. I hope people can ignore that and concentrate on her awesome play now. She's been so solid throughout this tournament and how long has she played this game? A year, right? And now she's beating Huk without a problem. I wonder how far she can go!
She also beat a lot of TSL players during Acer vs TSL. She went 3 - 1
With that being said, Go Scarlett once again! You deserve it.
Yeah, I saw that. It was the first time I actually saw her play, and it was very impressive. She had such a slick ZvZ there, which was supposed to be her worst matchup. But even in that thread, people were negative. Wonderful to have them proven wrong.

They've never been on par with male progamers in OSL/MSL/Proleague, so no. While I agree the competition was much harder (bw/korea/offline > sc2/international/online), they were not even a threat for the pros.

I don't mean to be the kind pooping on things, but why is this lady, the same one that showed that she was quite incapable of commentating a game she supposebly played (World of Warcraft in 2011 EU Invitationals) casting SC2? As hard as Day9 tries to make it good, it just doesn't come out sounding good.
I think Scarlett's really been living up to the hype this weekend. If she keeps playing like she has been, I'd say she's the favorite to win the North American championship as well.

I'll be watching ESL stream & Grubby cast WCS SA.
I remember watching that, it was the worst casting I have ever seen. She isn't much better now either lol.

Day[9]: "Casting with my dear friend Soe"..................that probably explains a lot.
Just create 1 more match. NASL Champ vs Scarlett for that 30000 usd. Maybe she'd lost but at least she will give him (alicia or stephano) a run for that money..
this is the first time i've seen scarlett games. the hype is well deserved. very solid play. hope her winnings go towards a proper internet connection she can use to stream.
EDIT: hope the tourney organizers can fix the audio problems they're having
If any of the NASL guys see this, could you either update the link to the tournament bracket or can we have the OP's link changed to the liquipedia one? It's a hassle doing this end around trying to find the results, but maybe I'm spoiled from having the liquipedia links posted on pretty much every other tournament page
I thought Soe did a fine job casting. WHEN I COULD HEAR HER, NASL SOUND GUY. /glare
Watching Scarlett annihilate everyone she plays against is pretty funny. I wonder if Ddoro and Ostijoy are playing rock-paper-scissors for the "pleasure" of getting to play here again

I think Ostojiy is the only one with a shot at taking her down. He's the only one who's taken a map from her so far in this tournament, and ZvZ is the only matchup where she hasn't dominated completely. So we'll see, I would love a rematch
And yeah, I think Soe did a fine job too. Not extraordinary, but not bad neither.
Soe is fine, there are 5x as many mediocre male casters working big events who wouldn't be able to do a much better job. I just wish we held all our casters to a higher level of professionalism instead of relying on a small handful to carry the rest.
Seems like every other tournament there's random a random fangirl/friend who's invited to cast and then never seen again, that's where most of the animosity probably comes from...
Damn it I really wish I could be there. passport expired on thursday and couldnt get any time off of work T_T Looks really badass though hopefully there can be more Canadian events like WCS :D
On July 16 2012 06:08 chocopan wrote: Only just back. I know nasl is running late - is there a definite time for Scarlett's final game does anyone know?
It's worth noting that the Canada WCS was significantly more entertaining and handled far better by NASL than MLG handled the US WCS. There was no interest or hype for the US as MLG spent all their time hyping the laughable Kespa tournament.
Scarlett's only dropped one game (to Ostojiy in a ZvZ), granted, she's only played 5 sets, but it hasn't been against complete pushovers. Pretty impressive results. Got that Seal (maybe exaggerating a bit) creep spread.
I don't mind Soe at all, she seems cool and that she really likes starcraft. She should just stick to interviews for now though imo. If you can't spot that the protoss did nexus first and not forge first, then you should probably let day9 talk. I dunno, just sees important to have quality casting for a final.

The army control from both of these players looks pretty damn good.
roach roach battles are not boring at all when both players move their units like that.
Fantastic play by Scarlett throughout the weekend. Its great that she'll be able to go to MLG and future WCS events as a result of this event. I hope Acer supports her adequately with more tournaments like Dreamhacks/MLGs.
Hopefully she'll get herself a good laptop and start streaming with these winnings, on top of replacing the ipod she lost this weekend. She needs to start working her fanbase!

Considering that Scarlett is about to win the second lan she's attended (beating some of the best players in North America - HuK, Ostojiy twice, Drewbie and DdoRo, all in very, very convincing fashion (even the game she dropped to Ostojiy she was way ahead and just failed to scout a nydus)), I'd say that her results are at least comparable to Ilusion's, though its not easy to judge due to the small sample size of Scarlett lan games.
I also hope you're as disgusted by people like inControl, Destiny and CatZ

Yeah, I mean it's not like he just last week invited to a 4 player show match with Hero, MMA, & DRG. Clearly no one thinks Illusion is any good.

Oh Jesus not this shit again. Illusion has gotten tons of recognition, he's been invited to RBL and HIN and is considered the best NA terrans right now
Amazing play and congratulations to Scarlett! As a girl myself it's great to see a female pick up a big tournament win, what a great way to rep all the girl gamers out there. Like I don't think there will ever be a time when the male to female ratio in the game world will ever be 1:1, but I'm glad that Scarlett could show she not only has what it takes to play with the boys but she also has what it takes to beat them too! Very much <3 to her!
It's hard to tell how good she really is based on only two LANs, but the quality of players she has beaten definitely warrants more invites, and not just because 'she's a girl'.
EDIT: And her style really is nice to watch. Great execution, low-risk, no gimmicks ... it's refreshing (at least to me).

Why the strong language?
I would say that the Canada tournament was simply handled much better than the US one, where MLG pretty much swept it under the rug. I thought the US tournament had plenty of great games yet it wasn't advertised correctly. Whereas NASL has done such a great job integrating it into the weekend's events
GGs by Scarlett, the Illusion comment MIGHT be referring to the fact that Scarlett was the lead, main "story" of IPL 4, when she beat 1 Code A Korean, 2 good foreigners, and took a game off of Oz, a Code S player. Illusion in the same tournament took out THREE then Code S players at the same tournament, not games off of three, matches, and got a lot less hype (Zenio, Ryung, and Oz).
EDIT: This is not to say Scarlett doesn't deserve any hype, or that Illusion has gotten NO hype, it's just a relative thing. I think players like Suppy should get more hype for his MLG run, (he did get some hype, again, it's just a relative thing). I think we need to focus on ANY really good potential talent coming up in NA, because frankly, there isn't enough of it.

It's a possibility. Hormone treatment doesn't affect the voice the same way it does the rest of the body, and a lot of people going through the transgender process go through voice training in order to better mask their voices. Those who haven't or who are in the process of doing so often are uncomfortable with speaking for that reason.
I'm asking an honest question here - when did it become okay to identify Scarlett as a transgender? When she first appeared in the scene at MLG it was considered taboo call her anything but 100% female.

But in all fairness, I think Illusion has been invited to more tournies since then than Scarlett has. He performance did get noticed by people that matter.
Beside, the scene needs more role models of diverse backgrounds to grow the scene. Someone like Scarlett getting the right kind of attention -- A girl/transgender player that is ACTUALLY GOOD, versus a 'hot girl' that is fake 'nerd' -- is good for the community.

I do have transgender friends and I am active in the LGBT community. To me, she's a girl, as is any transgender person who happened to be born with the wrong chromosomes. No one really has any business asking and thinking about what's between her legs. She considers herself a woman, and I see no reason not to. I also see no reason to call attention to the fact that she's transgender, as if it was some kind of third gender. The only ones who have any business thinking about her biological sex are herself, medical professionals and any sexual partner.
Edit: If you have questions about gender identity and transgender, please PM me instead of derailing the thread. Some people are genuinely curious. I'm not the best person to ask since I'm not transgender myself, but I can point you in the right direction.

Honestly I feel that the problem isn't people calling her transgender; it was those that refused to call her anything but 100% male.

And I mean, at the end of the day, a MtF transgender is pretty much as far outside of the gamer stereotype as you can get. I think its worth celebrating that someone that is so far from what is usually considered the hardcore gamer demographic is doing so well. That's not to take anything away from her play, or saying that people are rooting for her because she's a girl (or transgender), but I really believe that someone like Scarlett doing so well is good for the image of the community and we ought to be happy about that.
And beyond all that, I'm just happy to see a Canadian player looking so solid ^^
I'm a bit disappointed I missed the loosers bracked broadcasts. Apparently even the consolation matches were streamed. I don't know how I missed it. I really hope there will be vods and replay packs available. When I saw HUK go no scout builds pvp, and even no scout builds like 1gate stargate into 4gate stargate all-in without an obs... not even scouting the perimeters of his base I was really hoping to see tubby proxy, cannon rush or even nexus first - I know he knows it's the way to beat HUK the way he's playing pvp lately. I'm happy to hear he did it when he faced him again. It looks bad, but it's the way to play against HUK's style. You can't just let him get ahead and then win with a stupid all-in that just gambled on the hopes of not getting cheesed earlier.
Im not in the transgender discussion, its just somewhat impressive and cute a girl just won this. I was somewhat familiar with the nickname "Scarlett" from Canada before, but not with the whole background.

I'm just really impressed by the way Scarlett won over all. I'm getting pretty tired of watching the 'Korean' style of players cutting corners and taking insane risks to get any kind edge, a style which I think Huk embodies.
It's nice to see Scarlett get rewarded for technically solid play, and I'm really proud that she is going to represent Canada. The fact that she is a girl and transgender is just icing on the cake, god knows that this community could use more diversity.
^^ I agree absolutely. I don't follow Scarlett a lot, because she doesn't play protoss :D but I can appreciate that even though my favorite players are capable of playing spectacularly well when they're on their A-game, Scarlett plays spectacularly all the time and she had a perfect series at WCS.
Unfortunately not. The only vods you can get are from: http://de.twitch.tv/cstarleague They casted the first round matches of TubbyTheFat vs HUK, but had sound trouble, then they went on casting CSL. I think they did catch one or two looser bracket games later on, but that's about it. Main stage and 2nd stage with Idra and Incontrol both have the vods blocked

Her voice sounds very feminine actually. Infact, its actually very sexy.
Her first interview, he voice was weird to me, but her Gamespot one from today, she has a very unique and almost sexy voice as you stated. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her, especially seeing her loosen up for interviews.

Is Major even in the NA Champs? He's not listed in Liquipedia as being qualified.
If Major isn't there, Huk and Illusion are the only two players at NA Champs that might beat Scarlett.
According to this TL thread, Major was among the 8 who qualified to the Mexico finals in the last qualifier, but the results are not on Liquipedia for some reason and I can't find them anywhere else.
Thanks for the Gamespot link by the way, awesome to see an interview where she's a bit more relaxed.
Scarlett must be really confident in ZvZ and ZvP to have absolutely no fear of Idra/Vibe/Mystik from the American qualifier, all of them in my opinion had/have potential to take ZvZ games off of really good players, Suppy is good too but I can't recall him beating a top zerg in a lan before. Funny how seemingly the majority of Terrans are complaining about ZvT and the only 2 people who Scarlett fears in NA qualifier are Terrans.

I've heard conflicting reports on this. Some say the VoDS are pay only, by which I guess they mean the live matches. But hopefully that doesn't include WCS? I was at the event, so I couldn't actually watch the WCS matches that weren't on display there.

Honestly to me it makes sense. Even before her win and interviews I was saying to my buddies that Illusion and Major are the only two that could give her a real run for her money. I mean between her IPLTAC games and her games this WCS it seems like she's on that whole new level of zerg that DRG and Stephano are on, in terms of micro at all times while macroing (yes I'll go as far as to say that. Most of her mistakes are to dumb little timings and things which she'll figure out with more tournament experience. But look at her fucking creep spread for example and, especially in her series against Ddoro, notice how it keeps going WHILE she's fighting and microing zerglings...) Even her one loss was a result of a last ditch nydus. Which was a fantastic game btw, Scarlett went for a very unique build which I think actually works due to the 5 range queens. Anyway, Vibe is pretty inconsistent and Idra is... well Idra. I haven't seen much of Mystic tho so I can't comment there.
