Any path to any final is going to be a hard path. I was just saying it could've been harder if he would have had to face Alive/Ryung/MMA/PuMa. But yes, I agree with you.

Great tournament, next time think about the Europeans please.
Totally, I was trying to stay awake to see the finale live, but the LoL finale just delayed things too much and I went to bed. But that's almost always like this with US tournament, the trick is just to learn how to get to the VODs without being spoiled.

Finally watched the final VODs. I think Slasher has to shave his head twice now - first, right now, immediately, on the next show he's on. And then at Blizzcon too.

Congratulations to Stephano, you showed us, in my opinion, the most exciting games of the tournament and it was a well deserved win. I agree with this. But I would add that I personally right now, looking at his play this tournament, would rate him as 'the best foreigner'. Part of it has to do with the state of protoss, perhaps Huk in theory is better but with protoss struggling so much it's hard to see. Also, I wouldn't rate him as high as ... say ... NesTea and MvP for sure, but I'd add in another 10-20 koreans I think (but - I might change my opinion soon, and if he improves, he might be among the very best in the world). 1 tournament win where he beat theStC and Happy doesn't = being better than NesTea, July, LosirA, MvP, Bomber, MMA, Polt, Genius, Puzzle, Oz, etc ... but it doesn't mean he is far behind either! I hope he participates in the korean tournament, and does well, really excited to see him play against the very best. And - he was amazing this tournament, well deserved win! ... before this tournament, I would have rated him quite a way behind Idra and Huk - not so right now.
Firstly, I am absolutely astounded that the Korean Terrans went down, and that Stephano won. I am extremely pleased for him and for the foreigner scene. Two tournaments with Koreans in them in a row to foreigners now!
That said, Stephano isn't code S quality, he just isn't. Unless I'm mistaken, he didn't have to play against a code S player in the tournament. He dodged both MMA and Huk, and also Puma, who technically isn't code S but he is up there in terms of skill.
Comparing him to Nestea and MVP is just a whole other level of stupid though.

Dude... He just 2-0 Huk in the groups... And did it before at the Homestory Cup (which Huk won)...
If Huk is Code S level, then so Stephano is imho... BUT i would actually question if Huk is Code S level . Which is stupid, because he's sitting there since quite some time... ....

WHY COULDNT I SEE IT IPL?!?!? WHY BRING 4 HOURS OF LOL IN BETWEEN SO I WASNT ABLE TO STAY AWAKE FOR MY STEPHANO!!!! QQQQQQ
Apart from that bitter fact it was a well run tournament! So, take a 4 hour nap in between if you don't care about LoL?
Wanted to stay awake, then fell asleep around 4am during the last LoL match

Bravo à toi Stephano,
I was a bit worried, that he had to do this "panel" while saying " I dont know who the STC is and how he plays" :/ and instead of preparing, having to answer the question about favorite ice cream and ricky bobby... Also having little time to rest before lucky..
So like many of the european, I went to bed, after enduring 30 minutes of LOL, with 15min without anything happening.. it put me to sleep immediately, went to bed and to be honest, I didn't feel he could take both Koreans..
so I am bit sad I couldn't see Stephano winning, his game style feels very fresh to me, and is very entertaining to watch.
I have been following his stream from sometime now, and I really felt he was playing like a beast, this guy was genuine, and I was not surprised to see a post about his ladder run. it was really depressing to see people belittling his recent showings, whether about lag, not having winning LAN events (which was false), but linking his video loss against ryung (where stephano was in Tunisia, with a huge lag). Anyway I didn't take part on these threads, just keeping it to myself. Like in any sports, what matters is on the pitch, that the best answer that Stephano could give to all those haters, time to swallow back your sarcasm and bitterness, you got that one coming from miles, I know you won't come out to apologize, and I couldn't care less, because I feel pretty good today
As for Steph, it's good he went through the semi finals and finals without pressure, having completed his TOP 4 objective for this tournament. I will watch the VOD on my next break :p
|
At 1:00 AM in Europe I saw the LoL finals going 0-0 and I said to me: "Being LoL a so slow game better I go to bed than waiting 5 hours to see the semifinals".
Thanks for the links to the VODs although I have already spoiled myself...

Qualifier 2 > Anypro/Axslav/MarineKing, lost to aLive Qualifier 3 > Socke/Revival/Puzzle/KiWiKaKi/MMA Main tournament > Huk/Boxer/KiWiKaKi/Violet/Inori/TheStC/Lucky, lost to aLive
It's not just beating 1 or 2 Koreans. 26-9 vs Korea (Huk included) in maps for the whole tournament. MarineKing/Puzzle/MMA/Huk are Code S.

This will probably fall on deaf troll ears for the most part, but im ashamed some of these things hasnt already been mentioned.
If you honestly cant tell a player by his play (multitasking, builds, decision making etc.) I honestly dont know what to say... Some of the statements in this thread completely disregard everything around the results and focus 100% on the actual scores when they carry no significance towards what happend in the game (apart from the black and white of who won), as a way to discbribe Stephano's road through this tourney, which is quite frankly, rediculous. In an offline tournament so many things come into account, like nerves, jetlag and keeping your cool through all the games you play.
Stephano has not attended alot of offline tournaments, before this one the only one I can recall is Assembly summer, where he got third place, edged out 3-2 (i believe) by Dimaga (No one can deny his ZvZ prowess) who went on to win the entire tournament over MaNa in the finals. This time he won the entire tournament, which (pretty much everyone agreed on beforehand) was the toughest Korean competition of any foreign event to date.
The fact that the Koreans who were expected to shine did not bring their a-game (and they didnt) takes very little away from Stephano, if you werent half-asleep, not paying attention to the games other than the supply count and ooo-ing and aaahhh-ing everytime a baneling exploded (pretty bright lights, right?) The caster's imo did a poor job overall describing anything apart from the blatantly obvious stuff (and even getting that wrong on a few occations).
My point being if you just look at the games you would see that Stephano kept cool, calm and collected, had exceptional decision making and map awarness, executed builds nicely and pretty much COMPLETELY outplayed everyone he got matched against (apart from one Code S terran who hardcountered Stephano's mass ling style, in a set that was not critical for the final standings of the event). He crushed Violet, lost one game to TheStc (who is actually quite awful at TvZ) where TheStc had map control with hellions and took an unrealisticly fast third, which gave him a huge lead that no decent terran would have been able to throwaway, and he actually almost did. The other games were a complete slaughter against TheStc.
His hardest opponent this tournament was by far Inori, who had an insane run this tournament. Lost game one to a strong 8 gate attack, where he made 10 drones after scouting alot of gates and the combination of the proxy pylon made the stiuation unwinnable (even if he would have had spines, the third would have been undefended, and he would probably have lost too much) He played the shakuras game perfectly where he denyed Inori's attempt at a fast third before compeltely saturating three bases himself, even getting his fourth before Inori's third was able to be used. Inori had a shot in that game with storm and blink stalkers vs mass broodlord/corruptor, but pretty much threw it away going Voidrays I feel (corruptor/infestor is just too good vs mass air). Third game Inori tried for another 8 gate, but Stephano didnt make the same mistake twice and did a perfect hold. This was the only series that really tested Stephano to his limits, and Inori took out players like MC (his PvP is still pretty damn good, even though he his not the wreckingball he used to be) and HuK, which has arguably been "best foreigner" for quite some time now, putting up good results in Korea and during foreign events; which Stephano also did beat during group play 2-0 in pretty convincing fashion.
His games vs Kiwikaki were some of the most entertaining PvZ's i've seen in a long time, especially Shattered Temple match was insane. His play during this tournament was great and the fact that MMA, Ryung, ThorZain, HuK and Hero didnt play to their full potential this tournament does not take anything away from Stephano who, lets be honest, won this tournament easily. I havent seen any critique to Stephano's play, mistakes he did, bad decisions, sloppy micro/macro, the only critique so far has been who he demolished. Would things have been different if MMA played to his normal gosu standards? If Idra had slept, would he have beaten TheStc? If NesTea had been there would he have won for sure? What about MVP? We will never know, the only thing im sure of is that the games would have been much better and Stephano would actually have had to work for this win, saying he would have lost is just as silly as saying he would have won, you cant know. The great koreans didnt play to their potential, didnt make it past opponents on worse form than Stephano and they didnt deserve to win this tournament, Stephano did.

Does anyone have a link to the panel with MC? I went through the twitch tv videos from ign, but there are like only a few videos of day 4 apparently?

Amazing character
"Where are you going to take this skill now?"
- "To the bank"

I sense hope in the foreginer scene! <3 FOR STEPHANO! Sad i couldn't see the finals because im in europe.

Are there seriously guys doubting Stephano is one of the best players at the moment? I really can't believe it. He's Code - S material easily.
|
mvp didnt have the hardest possible path when he won some gsl. he didnt have to win against all the best players.
does this mean he isnt worthy? or the best player?
every tournament has a huge element of luck - do you get good match ups concerning players? do you get good match ups concerning race? do you play at your best when you absolutely need to, and have dips when its ok? and of course, not too many build order losses and such.
even nestea and mvp needs luck to win. in a game like starcraft you cant just depend on skill, unless youre 10 times better than your opponent.. and even then i guess you could lose now and then
