From the Korean netizens:

“To be honest I couldn’t even understand Stephano’s play. I just watched and suddenly Stephano is winning.”

Seems like im not the only one

wow, big big love for Stephano, unfortunately i couldn't stay up to see the games but this win automatically puts him as the best non korean sc2 player of all time imo, winning a tournament with the likes of MMA, Puma and Ryung seemed almost impossible for any non korean to do and stephano made it look easy.

Very satisfying to see stephano just crushing everyone.

Real sad the most talented foreigner in sc2 quits next year though :I

Anyone knows when the vods will be up? Or if they're already up somewhere, where are they?

I don't agree with measuring him up against MVP or NesTea yet. Winning an IPL is a lot smaller feat than winning a GSL. Or even three GSLs. By winning IPL he will be able to participate in GOMTV's Blizzard Cup and try his luck at the best of the best, and I'm really looking forward to seeing him play there.

Congratulations to Stephano, you showed us, in my opinion, the most exciting games of the tournament and it was a well deserved win.

I agree with this.

But I would add that I personally right now, looking at his play this tournament, would rate him as 'the best foreigner'.

Part of it has to do with the state of protoss, perhaps Huk in theory is better but with protoss struggling so much it's hard to see.

Also, I wouldn't rate him as high as ... say ... NesTea and MvP for sure, but I'd add in another 10-20 koreans I think (but - I might change my opinion soon, and if he improves, he might be among the very best in the world).

1 tournament win where he beat theStC and Happy doesn't = being better than NesTea, July, LosirA, MvP, Bomber, MMA, Polt, Genius, Puzzle, Oz, etc ... but it doesn't mean he is far behind either!

I hope he participates in the korean tournament, and does well, really excited to see him play against the very best.

And - he was amazing this tournament, well deserved win!

... before this tournament, I would have rated him quite a way behind Idra and Huk - not so right now.

Firstly, I am absolutely astounded that the Korean Terrans went down, and that Stephano won. I am extremely pleased for him and for the foreigner scene. Two tournaments with Koreans in them in a row to foreigners now!

That said, Stephano isn't code S quality, he just isn't. Unless I'm mistaken, he didn't have to play against a code S player in the tournament. He dodged both MMA and Huk, and also Puma, who technically isn't code S but he is up there in terms of skill.

Comparing him to Nestea and MVP is just a whole other level of stupid though.

Qualifier 2 > Anypro/Axslav/MarineKing, lost to aLive
Qualifier 3 > Socke/Revival/Puzzle/KiWiKaKi/MMA
Main tournament > Huk/Boxer/KiWiKaKi/Violet/Inori/TheStC/Lucky, lost to aLive

It's not just beating 1 or 2 Koreans. 26-9 vs Korea (Huk included) in maps for the whole tournament. MarineKing/Puzzle/MMA/Huk are Code S.

Ah I didnt consider the qualifiers, that is extremely impressive! And i missed Huk too.

Good sir, I was misinformed and I am glad you proved me incorrect. I wont jump on the bandwagon yet - I'll wait for more major tournament results, but I hope he continues to play as well as he is.

If Stephano had started school 2 years earlier, like me, he would have been able to afford a short pro-gaming career before his medical one. This win surely leaves a bitter taste, as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah, whatever

Stephano is not "quitting" next year, he's taken a year off and I believe he will take other ones if things go well.

Qualifier:
Stephano 2-0 Anypro (P)
Stephano 2-1 Axslav (P)
Stephano 2-1 MarineKing (T)
Stephano 1:2 aLive (T)
Stephano 2:1 Socke (P)
Stephano 2:1 Revival (Z)
Stephano 2:0 Puzzle (P)
Stephano 2:1 Kiwikaki (P)
Stephano 2:1 MMA (T)

Group Stage:
Stephano 2:0 HuK (P)
Stephano 0:2 aLive (T)
Stephano 2:0 BoxeR (T)

Main Tournament:
Stephano 2:1 Kiwikaki (P)
Stephano 2:0 viOlet (Z)
Stephano 2:1 Inori (P)
Stephano 3:1 TheStC (T)
Stephano 4:0 Lucky (Z)

8 protosses, 3 zergs, 5 terrans.
Overall: 33 : 13 (71,74% if I'm not completely mistaken)

So this is why I smile when I see posts saying that he missed the Code S players, etc. The guy is sick. 4 hours a day, only ladder practice? I have more games than him, that's for sure. I'm in plat, he's raping Code S players and the Elite of EU/NA/KR. I think I'll stop playing now lol.

not only did a foreigner win a tournament with 14 koreans ( edit2: in ro32 ), but it was someone who
1) is only known for ladder results, which aren't supposed to mean anything,
2) doesn't come from a big known team,
3) said on the stage he doesn't know the korean opponents, because he doesn't watch gsl,

... and he did it beating 5 koreans, huk the foreigner code s player and kiwikaki who is known for being a good tournament player.

this was exactly what was needed now when this ridiculous mantra or myth about training in korea is touted everywhere. if there's something wrong with your training or play, just fix it where you live.

unfortunately, many people will come up with every possible excuse to delegitimize stephano's victory instead of learning from it.

edit1: the post above me says he actually beat way more koreans. good

Some people aren't that surprised Stephano won this, as they've followed him for months and realize his skill. Guess the "fanboys" weren't so much fanboys at all?

Not that he's better than Nestea or something, that's a bit of an exagerration
But everybody say such things if their favourite player win a tourney; idk why people make such a big deal out of that.

And to folks saying he got "lucky", you're starting to get pathetic tbh...

So happy that the SC2 scene is growing all over the world and that the skill level is starting to equalize making tournaments so much more entertaining to watch. its not like, oh he is Korean, he already won the match. Now its like, everything can happen.
Yeas. E-sports will be big in Europe and the US. Especially now that the economy is bad. People will stay home and play video games, because its to expensive to go out and party.

I second that, I'm not a fan of the guy. But his play, as well as those of DRG feel refreshing when every zerg in the world is playing macro-oriented passive style. Those guys have sick timings and really well though-out builds, and they actually micro their units. That's why their plays are so refreshing and impressive.

So, gratz to Stephano, he deserves it.

PS: too bad I didn't get to watch it live since it LoL finals were scheduled that way
