Really, didn't he himself tried four gating/rushing MC in games 1 and 2? He did, and he failed, because MC is a clearly MUCH better player. Then, he goes for a macro game in the third, and then complains about 4 gate. Why would you do a 4 gate push yourself and then complain about it?
He needs to watch his own games before he starts bullshit.
When I saw the chat I read it as WhiteRa being clearly upset with PvP in that it's become so funneled into one build-the 4gate. That's why he said it's "best." There's no other options and that's got to feel depressing as a professional player.

Well, I guess tonights results further confirms that we're in the middle of a huge generation shift in the foreigner SC2 scene. Of course, some "old school" (as if you could call anything SC2 related old school) beta players are still performing exceptionally well and will probably keep doing so, but on the whole we see some less known names dominating. While the team who went to represent the world in the GSL World invitational are all exceptional players, I'm unable to consider many of them the absolute top of the foreigner scene.
That being said, after FXO open and the previous TSL rounds I started to think that the foreigners had finally caught up with the Korean scene. After the GSL World Invitational and today I know better. While the skill gap is not nearly as huge as it is in BW, I believe there's still a clear gap.
I might be wrong in this, but I believe global eSports will eventually come to a crossroad. As the gap gets larger and the Korean pros participate in more and more international tournaments we'll either see exclusive tournaments to put local talents in the spotlight, much like national leagues in various sports work now, or a complete Korean domination. Personally, I don't mind the latter, but it might reduce SC2's chances of gaining popularity with a broader, more casual, audience. The people who just want to see the highest level of play and care little for cheering on the "home team" should find that preferable though.
Of course, my assumptions are based on statistics and impressions. I lack the knowledge and skill to measure players by their gameplay alone.

is whitera still in korea?

Tyler's fine, its just a slump, people overreact over a two week period. Problem is Tyler's been in a slump since the beta started.. dunno people says it's because he WOWs too much... I think it's just because there is a lot more competition in SC2 as opposed to SC1. In other words, overrated.. he's still a fine fellow though, very likable guy. What? SC2 has more competition than SC1? SC2 is still a game of luck in most cases, nothing compared to SC1. User was warned for this post
Even though you are warned, still second this!

Really? No other options? I thought he should only be upset with himself because MC outplayed him all 3 games. Note MC only went 4-gate once, twice he went 1 gate robo. White-ra's 4-gate failed and he failed to defend against a 4-gate so clearly it wasn't a "whoever goes 4-gate won" type situation.

Measuring players by their gameplay alone isn't difficult either, but requires a much larger sample size than just a few tournaments. Replay packs are best (with the assumption that said player is playing at 100% efficiency all the time), but not many release those, especially not the Koreans.
Lan tournament play is a different beast, since other factors like being able to handle nerves, performing in front of a live audience, cameras, lights, booths, etc. come into play.
All in all, I'd say that it's rather difficult to judge without empirical data and other "statistics and impressions" like you said, so I wouldn't say that those assumptions are off base at all.

I think there was much lost in translation about WR's comment in game 3. It's highly unlikely that it was some personal quip towards MC. As someone else has mentioned, it was probably just a combination of his dislike of the state of PvP coupled with the fact that he just got knocked out of the tournament.

oGsMC!!!! WOO!!! But Tyler = (

I think you should find some new thread on tl.net. Can we talk about todays games besides talking about SC2 vs SC1 vs WC3 and other stuff related to this?

4gate or no 4gate...MC just outclassed whitera easily. None of the games were even remotely close. Even 2-3 minutes of doing essentially the same thing MC gets ahead.

An awesome day of matches with excellent casting and production value. I really appreciate the high standards TL has for their own tournament. It is awesome to watch and I was actually able to convince my girlfriend to watch with me (normally she doesn't even watch sports because of how boring they are). I really just appreciate TL and pokerstrategy.com for all the work they put into the TSL. You guys are awesome!
ok enough of my drooling over TL I really enjoyed watching thorzaine game 1. Holy cow talk about a safe transition into mech. It really seemed like there was no time during the game where thorzaine was vulnerable and tyler really played into his hand with his passive build. Some strong points of thorzaines play in my opinion: He engaged very favorably by dropping the PDD's and creating a wall with hellions while keeping the thors back. The way this worked in my head was that the hellions soak the charges and immortal shots while taking down the shields of the immortals then the thors engage and melt everything. In the past, I really felt that mech required ghost play to prevent the immortal stomp. This type of engagement strategy opens up some options. Going ghostless frees up a ton of gas for more thors and ravens which thorzain used to great effectiveness. I think one of the coolest things of thorzains play was the use of strike-fucking-cannon! I know this isnt something entirely unheard of but it is a great way to devalue the colossus and immortals in the toss army instead of using ghosts.
Overall, really impressed with Thorzains play and looking forward to applying some of his techniques to my own play.

A fairly anticlimactic day's worth of games lol. Not sure what's happend to Tyler, but he's in a pretty big slump. Did he see the mass thor before he started massing colossi, or did he just see two factories and assumed a lot of tanks with a few thor would be made? Also, whitera said, "gg 4gt push is besty" --> That isn't BM at all. He's just saying that 4 gate is the best build in pvp, and at the moment, he's right. It's certainly a lot better than 2 gate expo anyway.

I can only express my deep sadness and disappointment at todays results.
Nony <3
|
I really think Nony should have spawned 4 zealots instead of 4 stalkers when he got up his ramp. They hack away at zealots and marines.
|
Tylers MLG performance was pretty much expected because his heart was not in it after his comment on state of the game where he said something like: "If I win a couple MLGs it wouldnt be my best year" or something like that (i'm sure he used different words!) like a MLG win isnt much worth for him.
But really sad to see him getting eliminated so early in the TSL, really thought this would be his tournament
|
to people saying it's not bm, come on, what is it? A discussion about the balance of the game?
No, he belittles MC beating him by saying 4gate is the best build and since he didnt do it well, oops he lost you picked right mc!
|
I saw thorzain use that build against adelscott in the qualifier he won. I thought it was genius and as a mech lover it's a staple strat for me.
Colossi are not bad against that strategy even though armor grades is good against their attack since it's 2 hits. Tyler just played to safe and had to little gateway units. Protoss should avoid contact until 200/200 and a ton of gates because they are the ones with aoe. I didnt understand why tyler forced a battle.
Mass immortal not so good strike cannons slaughter them, you need colossus from the far and a lot of meat keeping them safe from strike cannons.
Always cool with crushing victories in the earlier rounds it makes for more hype later on;
UNDEFEATED. Different strategies every time, Never all-ins, 5 and 0 - Thorzain! etc
|
Pretty bad play by tyler, scouting slipped in the firts game and slow transition to immortal? Macro was lacking later games too.
|
I wasn't surprised by today's results at all. Team liquid as a whole hasn't been doing all to well lately. They have all been playing nonstop since beta (except TLO), perhaps they need a bit of a break? Anyways TSL so far has just been a ton of upsets, not even fun to watch unfortunately.
