The 21 players will be divided into 3 groups of 7. Each group will play a full league and the top 4 players of each group will advance into Code A.
The group lottery will be conducted this week with the players and coaches attending.

Groups for the decision matches have been released: + Show Spoiler +
I dont know if they contacted TLO and heard he would not come back to Korea, or how this was decided. This is pretty much all the info we have at the moment.
PS: Sry for not having all the TLPD links in that OP, I just used the auto-command. PPS: Did a mod just rund the whole thing through TLPD again? I DID remove the random icon from "into" and all that jazz, manually.
On December 08 2010 23:37 Jocoma wrote: Hmm, where's TLO?
His points should be enough to be in code A so there should be a different reason he's not on the list.
I'd guess he just declined it. Given the health reason he's hinted at for why he went back to Germany, I wouldn't expect him to head back to Korea for it.
what about the others who are not in this list (HuK, Haypro, etc.)? how will they be able to move up? it would be good to have a few wild cards in there, with a special tournament where for example the top 4 would be awarded code A.

There was, at least previously, listed they were going to do some Ladder-based Tournament, winners there would be battling to take out some Code A players. Same thing will happen with Code A & Code S.
But, as with a lot of this right now, details are a tad sketchy.
Does anyone know any information on oGsTheStc? I know he was doing his tour of duty, but Jinro said he was helping him for his Ro8. Does this mean the tour finished and he will be trying to get into GSL's from now on, or is he just on a break from his tour?
I think they must have contacted all the players first to see who actually wanted to play, so guys who made ro32 but have already left Korea like Sen/TLO aren't listed.
On another note, am I the only one who thinks Ret will crush this field?

Are players able to join in the GSL if they're not Code A or Code S and if not, for how long ?
If I was HuK right now, I'd like to know what I'm staying in Korea for, I mean is there anything expect ?
They are not, the first 3 seasons of the GSL were "open" the next seasons will include the Code S players and some of the Code A players, for HuK I dunno, but Code A will battle with Code S holders for that title and the rest will take on Code A players to get a spot on future GSLs and other tournaments.
There will be a different kind of tournament every month in the GSL next year. During the months of February, May, August, and November, there will be a ladder tournament. These players will play against each other for a right to enter Code A. Additionally, at some point, the top 8 Code A players and the bottom 8 Code S players will play each other, with the winners going to/staying in code S, losers going to/staying in code A.
How this will change considering this information was revealed at a point when there were supposed to be 64 players in Code A, I do not know. But there will be opportunity throughout the year for players to advance and challenge their way into Codes S and A.

So if memory serves me right, the "ladder" tournaments and the GSL were separate. The bottom half of the Code A tournament would come from the same kind of qualifying tournament that the current pre-season has been using, or possibly some other kind of open qualifier system. Players who won in a Code A ro64 (or made it through to the second round if they do group play) would automatically keep Code A for the next season, while the rest would be bumped down. I don't think that Gom has actually announced this yet, but it's been the collective conclusion of previous threads on the topic, and it's pretty much the only system that makes sense given that Gom are not stupid and realize that (a) foreigners = money, and (b) ladder play =\= tournament play.
Edit:
TheLight wrote: The remaining 32 players will be from the ladder rankings.
This is a common misconception, but no: According to http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=170373 the "bottom 32 players will have to go through qualifiers to play in the next Code A tournament." Additionally, there will be a GSL in January (before the first ladder tournament) and a GSL in April without a ladder tournament between it and the March GSL. So the bottom 32 in the Code A tournament will definitely come from qualifiers, not the ladder.

He's either going or still is in his tour. I think he stated he would be finished sometime around mid year next year. I guess he just helped in his off time or managed to get some time off

From what I understand he has to be highly ranked on ladder so that he can qualify to play against the bottom half the A-class in a qualifier to the next GSL, where depending on results he could secure A-class for himself or even S-class.

Only 32 guaranteed spots for Code A. 32 spots will be open through qualifiers.
I'm still confused. If I remember correctly, Code A will have 64 players. According to the calendar, the 2011 GSL A-Class Season 1 will be held on 01/03/2011. So when will the last opened 32 spots be determined? Seems not possible during the rest of this month.

I'd assume GOM will just run offline qualifiers for the 32 non-guaranteed spots.

Maybe I can help this discussion out a bit. (I could be wrong though)
After Code S and Code A's, for people who wish to join the GSL but did not make it to at least CODE A... Then I think(Hence the I THINK, please don't flame), if players wish to enter the GSL they must ladder on the Korean server and be in the top 10? 12? something like that.
Following the end of a GSL tournament, players that are in the bottom 8 of CODE S will play the top 8 of CODE A's and the bottom of CODE A will play the top ranking ladder players.

The ladder rank as mentioned is for a different tourney, all of us are basing this off one source btw, but from the GSL Code S thread (and in liquipedia) it's kind of stated that you will play qualifiers to get into Code A (bottom half) - which at least means player like HuK or if the EG house gets set up, it won't be for nothing.
Side note: I don't know if Ret will actually survive the Bo1 style long enough to get to Round of 8 considering the current solutions to 2 rax aren't super solid yet (and this probably all DAVIT will do ). I really hope he can do it though.
i thought code A is 32-96 and then bot 32 of code A will play with top 32 ladder players for promotion/relegation.
Players that are ranked 1st through 32nd will be set as Code S and players that are ranked 33rd through 96th will be set as code A. After a league, the lower ranks of Code S players and the upper ranks of Code A players will play a match to decide their position for the next league. Also, the bottom 32 Come A players will have to play against top 32 Battle.net players to decide the Code A players for the next season.
Well, i'm all for limiting the number of code A because not everyone deserved to be Code A because of 1 fluke win in Ro 64 against terribad opponents. Hopefully this will filter them away and put those who deserved it more. But they should have been consistent about the policy from the beginning imo.

It is still 64, the bottom half of the 32 will be determined by the qualifiers (which are like what we have now for open season). Only the top 32 Code A players are seeded for Code A tourneys, though a total of 64 "Code A" players participate.
Go go ret!! This is so exciting - will there be some sort of livestream for this?
This is how the ranking privileges were explained to me.. hope it helps..
There will be a 32-man tourney with all the S-classers, and a secondary 64-man tournament for all the A-classers starting next year. Bottom S-class after each tourney will become A-class, top A-class will qualify into S-class, and likewise bottom A-class will lose their rank and qualifiers can gain A-class.
Side note: I don't know if Ret will actually survive the Bo1 style long enough to get to Round of 8 considering the current solutions to 2 rax aren't super solid yet (and this probably all DAVIT will do ). I really hope he can do it though.
round robin means every1 will play every1 else one time. it is a league format, no elimination format. there are 21 matches in bo1 per group for round robin. ret plays 1 game against each of his 6 opponents. if he wins 4 of these games (4-2), im pretty sure that he has his code A for sure. even with 3 wins (3-3), the chances are far above 50% that it will be enough for top4 out of those 7 players.
btw does any1 know what they are gonna do if there are ties in the groups?
for example, if in a group 1 player goes 0-6 and another one goes 1-5, then the remaining 5 players all are 2-0 after playing against the 2 sucky players. it is then possible that they all go 2-2 among each other, resulting in 5 players being tied at 4-2 with even records among each other. playing another round robin with these 5 players would require an additional 15 games (assuming bo1 format) just to break that tie. in particular, this round robin could once again end in every1 going 2-2. imagine there is an endless tiebreaker loop like in the famous effort-smash-keyboard-tiebreaker in korean air osl, but this time each round of the tiebreakers takes 15 games...

It'd be better if they did bo3 then. To avoid tie breakers like this. With 6 matches and a Bo3 format the chances are smaller to end up with same w/l ratio of games in a group.

Albeit not in English, but the games will be streamed, according to John (see http://www.gomtv.net/2010gslopens3/forum/6700 ). So there will be no GSL-free time for us between RO4 and finals

haha funny man :D
Anyways those players in group A of Ret. Aren't they all known cheesers in the GSL? Since they're also Terran I can't but hope that there should be some kind of safe maps for Ret and hope he finds some way to stop 2rax scv/marine push.
Meh. I don't think this tournament is going to matter very much. With the top 52 (code s + 20 locked code a) not participsting in the qualifiers, it will probably be easier to get into the code a tourney via the qualifier, rather than via this tournament result.
I think a lot of people are confused by the whole code A thing. Just because you're a code A player (#33-96 in GSL via points), that doesn't mean you will get a guarenteed spot in the Code A tournament. The bottom #65-96 will still have to go through the battle.net qualifiers just like everyone else. The code a title is just fluff, unless you're in the top half of code a. Maybe they'll get seeding in the qualifiers or something.
I still don't know how they're going to make that qualifier be a "top 32 battle.net" though. Because the top 64 of the GSL are bound to fill up alot, if not the majority of that list. Hopefully gretech won't pull a kespa and force everyone both in the gsl and top 32 ladder to play those matches. Besides, there's bound to be situations where some of the top 32 may choose not to participate in the gsl, for whatever reason.
Maybe gretech has inside information about the promised "esports patch", maybe it will be possible to set up brackets and record results within the SC2 client itself. That would be a good way to fill the bottom 32 spots of the code a tournament.

You must be really shocked that he might win the whole GSL as well!
This is who should advance from each group in order from most likely to least likely (the number after their names is their overall skill rank of all participants in the GSL):
Group A: (played on Dec 14th) (Z)LiquidRet 37 (T)aLivefOu 38 (T)DAVIT 43 Ace 45 ------------------------------- (P)FreeSaGa 54 Gilja (sync) 117 (T)MaruPrime 130
Group B: (played on Dec 15th) (Z)NewDawn 28 (T)sCfOu 33 (P)Keeping 46 (Z)Terious 51 ------------------------ (T)ParkJongHyuk 53 (T)justfake 55 (T)LittleBoy/oGsggOma 57
Group C: (played on Dec 16th) (Z)Monster 27 (Z)Golden 49 (Z)PhoeNix 60 (Z)FOXMoon 62 ------------------------------- (T)AugustWeRRa 63 (P)Pippijung 65 (T)NEXTaeja 68
From this I can gather: Ret is very likely to advance. Group B is probably the hardest group. Moon is right on the cusp, and after Monster and golden, it is anyone's guess as to who is gonna make it in.
One flaw in this statistical analysis is that while it does give some preference to players who are more recent (by connecting everyone), I do not think it does enough. A Ro64 player in GSL3 is far better than a Ro64 player in GSL1, in my opinion.

I'm curious about this as well. Technically it is possible for every player to go 3-3 which would mean the group round was a total waste of time.
Most likely though there will ever only be two people tied at most but if there are three or more things get interesting.
Does anyone else feel like group C is significantly harder than the other two groups? I feel bad for the 3 players in that group who fail to advance, since they all deserve that spot I feel, whereas the same can't be said of everyone in the other two roups *cough* DAVIT *cough*
I have a hard time believing that ret won't get #1 in his group though, let alone top 4.
Also, when was it announced that there are only 32 class-A players? I always thought the plan was to have 64 class-A.

We can't assume that the GSL1 players haven't improved any in the months since. You can then say that if they had improved then they would have made RO64 again in subsequent GSLs but we all know there is too much luck at play in brackets if even guys like Tester can fail to qualify twice.

Well that was really all. I mean it was even fine if he killed the Nexus which he didn't but yeah. Apart from that he got steamrolled the whole game long, never having an advantage even though he got his eco up just fine and build the perfect "counter" units.
Well Ret was making units quick but he was sending them to fight as the hatched. So he sends 6 hydra... 4 get lifted instatenious and die.
Ret mistake was that he didn't wait till he get like 20+ hydras to move as a reinforcment. He should allow the P to take down 3rd base and counter when his units numbers would be biiger

ret and maruprime are both at 1-3, freesaga is done at 2-3, alivefou has 2-1 I think.
If ret wins his match and maruprime loses this, then ret will be in a tied 4th place with freesaga and might have to play him for another tiebreaker. If maruprime and ret wins their matches, and alivefou loses the next match after this one vs maru, there might be a three way 2-3 tie.
