I am upset at this news. As a student who lives on a shoestring budget, how do you expect us to pay? The broadcaster really doesnt understand the demographics of the people who watch SC2. Im afraid if they dont rethink their pricing and lack of a low quality free stream, they will get a shock when they realise very few are watching.

You also don't expect to pay more for a recording of the concert than actually seeing it live.

I think its about the same price for a ticket, as is a live DVD (depending on band of course)

So I have to pay $20 to watch them being streamed, at 5 in the morning, and then another $30 if I miss it? Wtf.

I dont think people going there saying "I want this for free!" will help more than if all customers at a store suddenly wanted everything for free.

Its a shame its something you have to pay for, when there is no guarantee that it will work properly and their terms of agreement basically is "whatever happens and whatever we do you will never get any money back". Hopefully its watchable on that OGN thingy, too bad I won't get to see artosis / tasteless, they are so awesome.

But if almost all of the potential shoppers in a store told them their prices were too expensive and showed them the amount of business they were losing, there's a good chance that store would listen.

I'd probably grudgingly pay if I had the money, but it's good game for this poor student. Not very impressed.

Some hero will put them up on a torrent site. Clearly it can't be teamliquid.net but they will find an avenue.

Sorry if this has been answered before but didn´t they say that the gsl will be broatcasted at OGN?

Because if they do thats a free tv channel as far as I know so they can´t stop anyone from restreaming that?

Also would you pay money for a stream if you could just watch it on tv for free?

TL is like a torrent site as they only post the links to the content someone else provide (in this case embedded streams).
Stopping TL will only have negative results for blizzard/gretech so there is nothing to worry about that. They'll have to go after the sites streaming that is livestream/ustream or whatever streams those people who watches OGN have are using.

I've watched enough online sporting event streams to know that they can be shut down
and ya I didn't really mean they go after TL like sue them or something, but rather simply ask them to not link the restreams... kind of like how it was with IEM (and MLG I believe). Of course I can imagine them shutting down the restreamers directly as well.

Yes I understand what you meant.
But now we're talking about a korean stream to outside korea.
There are so many streaming sites they possibly can't watch all of them.
There will always be atleast 1 or more on a streaming site streaming the content simply because gretech won't be able to monitor that stream (they'll have to watch every streaming website on the world and contact them to shut it down which is un-doable and costfull for them).

It'll work if the streams were only shown on a few known streaming sites.

Well, you have to get the link from somewhere, too. And you can't monitor every streaming website on the world, either. So you'll turn to TL and look what streams are posted here. And so will Gretech.

TL is not the only sc2 site. It is the most popular and the biggest one so they'll prevent the majority watching ogn streams but that won't mean they'll be able to prevent the streams since TL is not the only sc2 site. This is an inevitable problem for gomtv and in the end the only possible solution would be making sure all korean internet cannot be restreamed/accessed to outside of korea which is undoable or costly.

It's as hard for GOMtv as it is for you to find the restream. The only good way I could see is to spread the links through IRC, given they can't contact livestream/ustream/etc to take the streams offline. Otherwise, TL will hardly have any choice than to bend over and erase every post containing a restream. Otherwise, they'll be up against Blizzard.

Record companies do it all the time.

Right now it looks like their stay in korea will be short if GOM doesnt change their stance

Technically if they re-stream the TV broadcast and not the GOM stream i think Blizzard wouldnt be able to do anything.

This is a big slap in the face to all non-Koreans. I hope Gom regrets this a lot in the future.

how many seasons will there be per year? You are talking about $100-$150 a year for full access to starleague. This pricing cannot be optimal from a revenue perspective, you are charging 2x the game price just to watch a tournament. We all want to support esports but we will be pirating the streams and vods at the current price level. More reasonable might be $10 for live $15 for stream $20 for both and $30 for a full year of starleague.

Sad to hear. As much as I want to support the GSL, I will not be able to pay for the stream.

This is so disappointing. I hope they consider trying to negotiate with western companies for advertisements because I'm sure they'd get more revenue that way. They're guaranteed large viewing figures if it's available for free. But I really can't see many people purchasing this. I can't even get 500kb quality, not that I'd ever pay for a 4am live stream anyway. 30$ for VODs is far too expensive. Is that paying for their hosting costs? Again I can't see many people paying for that.

I'm also worried that it's also going to create bad relationships between foreigners and GomTV / Blizzard as we will all likely just watch free re-streams. Either with the English commentary or OGN version; wont matter to us.

Thats true ^^. I was trying to make apoint about some people's principle of not paying for any Esport coverage.

you mean they try and fail?

but this is what I've meant; they are acting like they are selling a highly valuable thing - but seriously, that's just a couple of games of starcraft

when you think about it: one month livestream + VOD and you could afford another copy of starcraft 2 itself - wtf?

GOMTV was a success first time because was free with the best players around. Now they offer some lower ranked players with money for streams. The conclusion is simple for everyone.

I feel like i knew it was coming, but all the crying about the fact that you have to pay for entertainment is ridiculous. Everyone should be paying, not waiting for someone else fit the bill to support something we all want to succeed.

That being said, the pricing is high for what you are getting. It doesn't seem like they did a lot of research of how to price it. Something akin to xboxlive or psnplus is more the standard in the west. $5 per month, with VOD's for free albeit delayed by a few days. That way they would sell a whole lot more subs than it will be right now. Maybe 10% of TL'ers will buy this (those who can afford it) and the rest will leech off other people's streams. It's just the nature of what happens.

It seems like this decision is purely an executive "far-away-from-the-street" one, based purely on numbers. I understand that GOM is a company for profit and can't put out stuff constantly for free. A bad income statement from Gretech is a bad sign to future companies who might consider sponsoring SC2. We really don't know what the financials of GOM is right now, and we have to consider that they do provide a lot of korean content for free. We also know Tasteless and Artosis won't be working for peanuts, so in fact, our money will be supporting them, as they support esports.

The fact that we have to pay is a natural thing. People have to grow up and get used to it. The pricing plan though in this instance sucks, and should be reworked for the next season or it will get disappointing numbers.
