I honestly have no idea if this is just a "we'll listen but that's about it" type of meeting, or if they are serious about finding a solution, but I'm going to unload a ton of contacts and suggestions to TorcH to see if they would be willing to go with anything.
Thanks to TorcH for looking out and hopefully something can come from it.
UPDATE: I've sent TorcH an email with a ton of suggestions and I've also mailed the founder of UStream to try to get something to happen here. I don't know if this is all for show or what... but it sounds like the massive amounts of criticism has them at least paying some attention.
Thank you for your efford, lets hope the best!

ehm, GOM-test: Your current PC Internet Speed : 214Kbps and with tptest.se Down: 63.17 Mbps (!!!!) Up: 27.32 Mbps (!!!!)
this is not a great value, if they would make it possible to watch without problems it might be worth it but as it looks now, wow really not.

Suddenly im a big djwheat and TorcH fanboy. Whether it amounts to anything doesnt matter. You have my appreciation. I hope that GomTV see that there is a solution that benefits both sides.

chances are its either gonna be decreased to 10$-5$ or have a 30$ combo for live/vod...but im still hoping for a free stream... thats a 1% chance they'll do it...its gonna be profit or no profit...easy decision there...

Thank you for helping out Wheat. I however do not have my hopes up to say the least. It really feels like no one in GOM is aware of non-Korean culture and I doubt that will change in two days.
But here's hoping...

The main difference in watching GOM's stream is that they foot the bill for streaming the content to thousands of us and host their own VODs for thousands of us. Traditionally we restream OSL/MSL/Proleague ourselves, but this gets routed through ustream, livestream, YouTube, torrents, and so on, and ends up giving these sites ad revenue. They have to charge us because the stream commercials will probably all be aimed at Koreans, like last time we watched GOM, and us watching those is sort of irrelevant.
So I don't think subscribing is a bad thing in itself. Pretend it's like getting cable TV so you can watch OGN. The price quotes so far have been laughable, though (as well as VODs becoming unavailable after the current season ends).

I thought about this last night quite a bit and realized a few things. Firstly gomtv is a media player, if they went through some other company they would be sacrificing market share for a easy way to make less money, by holding out it will initially be bumpy, but could lead to them getting their player on lots more computers in the west. gom will not go through ustream, it would be the equivilant of livestream having trouble, so they go to their competitor ustream to stream some content. The suggestions about this will go no where. gom is also not willing to make a big investment in an unproven market with out some immediate return, this investment is getting servers, bandwidth, and people here to work on them. And likewise Korean advertisers are not willing to invest in ads for a foreign market, doing so would be stupid, they don't even sell their products over here. Foreign advertisers are not willing to invest into putting ads on this player that they have no idea how many people will watch, what the quality will be, and if they can even deliver on their promise that it will get aired in the US.
Gom is trying to use this season to upgrade its equipment in the US so it can move to a less pricey model, and eventually to a free one once they manage to get enough confidence in their product that they can get more advertiser and sponsors. Now I don't really think this is the right way to do it, but in all honesty I don't know what is the right way for them to do it. If they charged less, they would get more income from this first season, but they would also have to provide more content, possibly more then they are capable of providing at the moment, leading to poor quality for everyone, which would be make it harder to get more people to advertise, and get viewers the next time around.
Perhaps the best thing they could do is to come out and say, "we don't have the ability to do a free stream overseas now, we are a national level company and we are trying to move into foreign markets, by investing in us for these first 1-2 seasons we will put all that money back into our infrastructure and then after that we will provide a free stream" I think that this would mollify a lot of people, increase the number of people that would pay for the stream, and then in the near future we would all(both gom and us foreign viewers) be much better off.

Hopefully Wheat and TorcH can find a solution. Best of luck to you two gentlemen!
|
TorcH went from being huge unknown to an absolute beacon of foreigner hope in like 1 week, haha. <3

the problem is, a couple of days ago they announced that VODs would be free
now what does this mean? it means that they had NO IDEA how they would handle it until recently; this is highly unprofessional to say the least; it's not the mere fact that everything is so screwed up, what bothers me the most, but they seem to didn't even know if and how much to charge until a couple of days ago
just think about a business company who creates a product or provides a service and decides a couple of days before release know how much it will charge; unthinkable, calculations have to be done way longer before that

Like many others have said, for me, it really is the AMOUNT of cash rather than having to pay. I bought the MLG stream and was fine with it. If you think about it, buying all the MLG streams is 50-60 dollars a year. GOM wants $50 a MONTH. I'd be happy paying say $15 a month for Live AND VoD service. Anything else is out of my price range (and I think a lot of other people's too).
|
I hope they wouldn't make it free and then crash financially plus fire Tasteless just because you guys are so stingy. Since the apparition of peer to peer servers it seems that everyone believe that everything on the Internet should be free, and that having to pay a little fee is some kind of outrage, how stupid...
I believe 30$ is too much but I would be more than happy to pay 15$ and have a good stream for a whole season.
|
Thanks djwheat and torch.
Hopefully they come to a good solution for everyone. Foreign esports community is still growing (and its growing fast) cause its community based and ppl offer there work non (or low) profit, because of that alot new ppl get hooked and then they consider paying for quality products. Only pay would kill this development.
Its like instead of milking the cash-cow GOM-TV is slaughtering it, what u get is beef.
|
thanks djwhear and torch.
im not bummed about them trying to earn money. I just find their pricing model a joke. The price is too high and lets not even go into the hilarious thing about not being to download/have access to the vods more than a month.
i would pay say 5-10$ a month for HQ stream. more than that is just a no no.
