pretty close final to be honest, the Best Euro vs the Best Korean and it ended 4-3 is a pretty valiant effort by Dimaga. Hopefully people start to recognise that the Korean's aren't MILES ahead of everyone else like they were in SC:BW - and people stop mentally blocking themselves before the games even happen.

Congratz Cool, Good show dimaga - sad you couldn't win it but great outcome none the less.

I'm really disappointed that the Chinese players aren't very strong yet apart from Sen (ignoring China/Taiwan controversy). I'm not sure why, but their play hasn't been very inspiring. I'm guessing it's because a lot of them come from WC3 backgrounds, and the ones who do come from SC1 like PJ and F91 are either lacking practice or weren't that good in SC1 anyway.

Partly correct, the most important reason is SC2 beta is not involving China mainland, very few ppl here got the CD-key to active SC2 beta.

Yeah, it's all about dedication and incentive. I could make a comparison with football here in Brazil and the rest of the world, saying that we are good at it because we got many important teams, you start playing since you are really small and the clubs really look for kids with potential to make them good players.

It's nothing about "koreans are always gifted for games". They just got the right environment for it. If Europe manages to host big tourneys and the big sponsors starts to show up, I'm pretty sure we could see Europe and Asia (KR) at the same level even when the game progresses!

You DO realize that "real" progamers in Korea not have even entered the SC2 scene, when top euro gamers are now the best they have/will have(in future).
I love you.

Yes, quite obviously DiMaga has reached his potential and will not ever be better than he currently is...[/sarcasm]

I suspect that there is not a large level of difference in inherent ability between most progamers and the top progamers, and that instead, the amount of practice taken, the quality of players to practice with, the amount of opportunities give by the coach to play, and the level of the player's confidence contributes a lot to the "skill" discrepancy.

Of course, they are not gifted, but if foreigners kept losing in the following 2 years of SC2.
Any professional starcraft2 league will not be a success outside of Korea.
Except that maybe China have a chance of pro league.
Once that happens, SC2 will be like BW.

Or maybe Blizzard can destroy SC2 in Korea for us.

Strawman much?

His point is that the European tops will - for the most part - remain the same (people-wise, not skill-wise) but that the current Korean tops are all retired progamers or amateur SC1/WC3 players and not necessarily the most adept RTS players.

I personally don't believe in "talent". In sports or e-sports work ethics is what matters - the more and harder you train, the better you get at it. Problem is in my opinion Europe/US players don't get as much sponsoring and attention as in Asia (South Korea). But it's the way I see it and with better sponsoring there would be more US/EU top players and maybe leagues.
Fans only win from better competition and I hope e-sports will continue to grow everywhere.

Nicely played by both Dimaga and Cool.

As for the Korea vs. foreigner debate, I really don't think the dominance Koreans had in BW were due to some natural, inborn superiority in RTS games, and I've said that before. Korea was dominant because people in the pro-leagues practiced more, practiced better (ie had quality training regimens as opposed to just mass gaming on ICCUP/with friends), and had a better understanding of the game within their SC community (which includes the players, the coaches, and the analysts/commentators). While foreigners were struggling to catch up on mechanics and game sense in BW, Koreans were able to compound their advantage via their stronger scene.

But in SC 2, it will be different, at least in the beginning. The Korean pro-houses are just getting started. Prime and oGs are only newly formed. Moreover, this time foreigners, informed by their understanding of how Koreans practiced in BW, are not going to be playing catch-up. We now have large SC 2 communities of our own (like this one), as well as numerous "pro-houses" that.keep up with how the meta-game is developing in all three regions (America, EU, and Asia) and is able to practice on all three servers. It won't be like the days before ICCUP, when foreigners were largely playing in the dark.

The question of whether foreigner SC 2 will be able to match Korean SC 2 is simply a question of whether foreigners are going to be able to keep up with the level of practice the Koreans will surely put in once the pro-houses become more established and organized. It's not like there's no precedence for this. In WC 3, a few foreigners (ie Grubby) were able to keep up with the Asians throughout the history of the game, so it's clearly possible. Whether it's going to happen, however, will depend on how the foreigner pro-scene develops.

It could be that somewhere along the way, people will start to lose interest and our pro-teams will fall behind like in BW. It could also be that it'll be like WC 3, where that never happened, at least for a few select players. Of course, it is likely that the general public skill level in Asia will be higher than the general public skill level in the EU/US simply by virtue of people there playing more competitive and for longer hours. But this does not mean that the top foreigner players will be unable to compete, even in the long-term, if they put in the necessary time, effort, and organization.

To end, while it is true that foreigners (by which is meant EU + IdrA, since other NA players were not invited) have still basically "lost" in every major international tournament held so far (namely EU vs. Asia, Kaspersky Cup, World Cup, and Altitude Invitational), I think we can say that the competition is much closer in SC 2 than it was in BW. Most of the times foreigners lost only by a slight margin, and have knocked out very strong players.
