This hotkey setup is made for QWERTY keyboards. If you have something different, please change some of the key settings.

YAKS is an economic and fast hotkey setup for zerg (Yet Another hotKey Setup), updated for LOTV

YAKS is made with the intention to feel natural, not hard to learn, comfortable for the hand and would make your most common tasks as easy as possible.

  • Larva injects are as fast and reliable as possible
  • Managing engagements is of the uttermost importance
  • Being able to use the keyboard in a good way, instead of fighting it with weird hand positions.
  • Army reinforcements as quick as possible
  • Easy to learn

This is done by:
  • Have all the keys closer to the modifier keys CTRL + SHIFT
  • Dedicate fingers to their column
  • Use the thumb by incorporating SPACE for many spells
  • Minimize reaching of the hand
  • Base cameras readily available

Here is a short overview of the setup:
and here is the complete overview of the setup, but maybe first read the rest of the post

Complete overview:
+ Show Spoiler +

full overview:

The idea:
As a Zerg player, there are many things you need to think about:
- Larva injects
- Droning
- Producing army units
- Spreading creep
- Controlling your armies
And the rest that needs your attention

This is a continuous cycle. We have tried to make all these things as quick and easy as possible. Thus allowing you to process more of the game in the same time. This is done by doing 4 things:

1) by making it easy to learn
2) by minimizing the hand movement around the keyboard
3) by making all these movements with as little of finger repetition as possible
4) by incorporating all the nice tricks that are around

1) Easy to learn
Migrating to a new layout will always take some effort. But there are a few reasons why YAKS is easier to learn than most other layouts:
- It is on the normal side of the keyboard, where you already have muscle memory build up
- Your fingers are dedicated to the columns, preventing you from making mistakes
- Although it is compact, there are few rules to be learned. For example, the creation, and recalling combinations are generalized and thus intuitive
- Spells and upgrades are organized by functionality on the same key. If you want to upgrade 'roach speed', you know it will be on the SPACEBAR, as SPACEBAR contains all speed upgrades
- There is a simple yet effective inject trainer to practice injecting with YAKS (on https://yaksinjecttrainer.netlify.com/ )

2) Minimizing hand movement:
YAKS is a very compact and economic SC2 hotkey layout.
- The default finger position is close to the standard typing position for touch typing (ASD). If you already can do touch typing, then this will be quick to learn.
- The fingers have their own dedicated columns. This makes it faster to learn and prevents you from making mistakes.
- The SPACEBAR is used for your most favorite spells and because the thumb is basically always resting on the SPACEBAR, it is really fast to deploy those spells.
- The layout is tucked in nicely to the CTRL and SHIFT key, meaning that using the modifier keys (for adding to control groups, queuing commands or other actions) is not weird to do.

3) Reduce finger repetition
We have also chosen to make the most important combinations without using finger repetition:

Z,X,C,V,B,N to scroll through your bases

Q,W,E and 1,2,3 to scroll through your armies

Your control groups are left of your commands and spells, making it easy to select a control group and issue a command to them

A,S,S (so basically A, hold S) for droning

4) All the nicest and best tricks
Two larva inject methods
Boxing Queens
This method is recommended by pros because it doesn't produce wondering queens. However it is slower than the cam inject method. I use it in early game, and in later game, when other stuff is asking for my attention, I tend to switch to the cam inject method.
- Use Cam hotkeys to go to your hatchery.
- Drag a selection box to select your Queen(s)
- Press SPACE to select inject larva
- Click the hatchery

Cam Inject method
This is the fastest reliable way of injecting your hatcheries with the least possibilities of wandering queens.
Have your queens hotkeyed to SHIFT+A by adding queens through CTRL+ALT+A. Then:
SHIFT + A -- select queens
Z,SPACE,click -- inject hatch 1
X,SPACE,click -- inject hatch 2
C,SPACE,click -- inject hatch 3
V,SPACE,click -- inject hatch 4
B,SPACE,click -- inject hatch 5
N,SPACE,click -- inject hatch 6
you have injected 6 hatcheries.
In case your queens start wandering, you can press CAPS LOCK to stop them

Now, to get the timing right between hitting space and injecting your hatcheries, it is good to train it. I made a little site where you can actually train it: https://yaksinjecttrainer.netlify.com/

This is the method recommended by pros, as it is both fast and accurate:
+ Show Spoiler +

Other inject methods:
+ Show Spoiler +

Although not recommended, there are other inject methods possible as well with YAKS. It will cause more wandering queens, BUT it will have 1 step less per hatchery (Selecting the spell)
Shift cam inject
SHIFT+A -- selects queens
SHIFT+SPACE -- selects inject larva
SHIFT+Z,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject hatch 1
SHIFT+X,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject hatch 2
SHIFT+C,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject hatch 3
SHIFT+V,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject hatch 4
SHIFT+B,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject hatch 5
SHIFT+N,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject hatch 6

Shift base cam inject
SHIFT+A -- selects queens
SHIFT+SPACE --selects spell
SHIFT+TAB,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject first hatch
SHIFT+TAB,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject second hatch
SHIFT+TAB,SHIFT+CLICK -- inject third hatch
etc.

YAKS is optimized for micro
Have all the micro hotkeys readily available, without reaching:
+ Show Spoiler +
D – Attack
CapsLock – Hold
` – Stop
TAB – Cancel
T – Patrol

Have all you army hotkeys readily available at:
Q, W, E, 1, 2, 3

Spell hotkeys are organized by functionality:
SPACE: Ground area of attack spell
S: Targetted spells - disable attack
R: Air attack spells - enable attack - morph
F: Burrow/unload
4: Unburrow/load

Upgrade hotkeys are organized by functionality:
SPACE: Speed upgrades
S: Melee attack upgrades
D: Air attack upgrades
R: Armor upgrades
F: Burrow upgrades

Cast spells efficiently (includes rapid fire)
Use Rapid Fire and Precision spells the way you like it
+ Show Spoiler +

Rapid Fire
Rapid fire is a technique that allows you to spam an ability very fast. This is useful in many instances. With a rapid fire enabled key, you can still decide to only tap it once and use it as normal. To rapid fire up properly, go into your keyboard settings and minimize the delay of your keystrokes.

The rapid fire key is bound to CTRL + the spell key. This allows you to easily decide when you want to use rapid fire, or when you want to not use it, per spell! There is also a dedicated rapid fire key on G.

the G rapid fire key is bound to:
- Corrosive Biles (Ravagers)
- Neural Parasite (Infestor)
- Creep (Creep)
- Consume (Viper)
- Caustic Spray (Corruptor)
- Contaminate (Overseer)

To setup rapid fire optimally, you want to increase the repeat rate of your keyboard. There is a nice tutorial on sc2swam on how to do that for windows: https://sc2swarm.com/2017/10/20/windows-settings-for-reducing-delay-and-increasing-repeat-rate-when-holding-down-a-key/

Precision spells
You don’t always want to be spamming, but sometimes you need to be precise, for example with blinding clouds on siege tanks. In that case you can simply hold the blinding clouds key down SPACE and click on all the places that you want to be blinded.

All the rapid fire enabled spells and abilities also have an alternative spell to be more precise, for example, you can also use corrosive biles with the SPACE key.

Some spells can be autocasted by using the keyboard. (currently only unburrow on burrowed banelings) The keyboard shortcut to do so is: ALT+key. So for example, when you burrow some banelings, you can set unburrow on autocast (press ALT+4), making them landmines.

Super fast army reinforcements
In YAKS the way CTRL and SHIFT work with the control groups are swapped. CTRL or ALT is used for adding to your control groups, SHIFT for creating control groups. Why? read on:
+ Show Spoiler +

Why would you turn around this fundamental principal of the game? Because the game does it wrong.

So you want to create some units, to join the battle, and you don't want them to just pop out, but want to put them in the right control group. How to do this?
+ Show Spoiler +

Old style:
press CTRL
click the egg portraits
press SHIFT
press dedicated hotkey
(4 steps)

YAKS style:
press CTRL
click the egg portraits
press dedicated hotkey
(3 steps, >25% faster)

Or, you have a mixed group and quickly want to add them to designated control groups
+ Show Spoiler +

Old style:
press CTRL
click the unit type to select them all
press SHIFT
press dedicated hotkey
(4 steps)

YAKS style:
press CTRL
click the unit type to select them all
press dedicated hotkey
(3 steps, >25% faster)

Or, you have a group with a few wrong units in it, and want to split it in its own control groups

+ Show Spoiler +
Old style:
box all units
press SHIFT
click the ones who don't belong in it
press CTRL
press dedicated hotkey
(5 steps)

YAKS style:
box all units
press SHIFT
click the ones who don't belong in it
press dedicated hotkey
(4 steps, >20% faster)

Droning
A,S,S or A,SPACE,S
+ Show Spoiler +
What this does:
A select your hatcheries
S Select larva
S Build drone

This way you always make, without any mistakes, your drones correctly. If there are no larva, no problem, because the select larva also has a binding to S. Thus you don't need to spam S,S as a crazy guy, but can just comfortably hold S, and when a larva pops, it immediately turns it into a drone. This is also true for overlords, zerglings, roaches, hydras, swarmhosts and mutalisks).

Other niceties
+ Show Spoiler +
-Select all idle works at: CTRL+ALT+CAPS LOCK
-To build a new hatchery, press S,D
-Next subgroup: Back mouse button (You know, those side buttons on your mouse)
-Previous subgroup: Forward mouse button (You know, those side buttons on your mouse)
-Need to split off a small group of your army to harass another base. select a part of army and press SHIFT+3 (for example) to remove this group from the previous group and go and harass the other base, while still controlling your main army. Use CTRL+ALT+S and CTRL+ALT+D to put it at the less used ALT+S and ALT+D groups to not interfere with your main army hotkeys
-CTRL+TAB to select all army units
-CTRL+CLICK a unit to select all units of that type in the screen. This is faster than double clicking the unit and because the CTRL key is close at hand in YAKS, it is also easy to do
-It is slightly more comfortable when you rotate your keyboard 10-30 degrees

Setting up your games
How to start your games:
+ Show Spoiler +
On the loading screen:
press S(hold)
click hatchery (builds your first drone)
release S
send overlord away (I use SHIFT+1 to add it to control group 1)
SHIFT+TAB: base cam
click hatchery
CTRL+A,D: add hatchery to its own control group and center cam on main
CTRL+Z to create cam on main
Press A,S,D to create your OL
Press A,S,S to create your 2nd drone
then go to all your possible expansions and press:
CTRL+X to create cam 2
CTRL+C to create cam 3
CTRL+V to create cam 4
CTRL+B to create cam 5

i d love to see what happened if zergplayers would have to play without rapidfire. Or protoss for that matter :D.

the whole thing is just so dumb. Hold buttons & wave mouse ... then hope your repeatrate is better then your opponents and you got an advantage.

Why would repeat rate ever actually matter? People set their repeat rate to be slow?

It’s a real quality of life improvement to people with RSI or other strain injuries

Personally I’ve never found it particularly useful but I can’t see it giving an advantage that is unfair at all

it's actually just good macro habit. in bw you had 1 click for up to 12 larva to morph. why is holding down a button an abomination??

This looks good. I'm coming back to the game after 7 years and it's a great time to learn new tricks.
I'm trying to map these to my Razer Tartarus at the same time, fun, fun, fun.

Thank-you for this.

Cool, I was hosting a legacy version of YAKS once I realized it was no longer available on the web:

Hi guys, I was toying around with the YAKS hotkeys until I got a cool idea for my injects. It is a new and different way to inject your bases with Larvae, that is faster, safer and easier to execute than the now prevailing inject methods. In short:

- no wandering queens
- easy to execute
- less actions to do

In long:
+ Show Spoiler +
Larva injecting is very important to do, and to do it fast. When you are in the middle of the game, managing your engagements, you want to get the larva to create more units. But you also want to do it fast, as you need your attention on the battlefield. Many pros agree that doing your larva injects on time is one of the most important skills to learn as a zerg player. How to do it as fast as possible while still being without errors?

+ Show Spoiler +
HOTS backspace method

In HOTS larva inject could be done with adding all the queens on 1 control group. Then select the control group, press SHIFT and select ‘spawn larva’ spell. Move your mouse over hatchery Then:

- Click on Hatchery
- Press base cam for next base
repeat
Send STOP command to stop queens from wandering

However, in LOTV, because you can stack larva injects, it is much more common that your queens start wandering around the map. Making you have to deal with that nuisance while it happens in the heat of battle. Also, creating and meaning your queen control group while in the heat of battle is a costly business, taking quite some cognition and apm to do that, as queens get killed, harassments, etc.

To read more why it doesn't work anymore: https://www.reddit.com/r/allthingszerg/comments/3sb78f/a_guide_on_injecting_properly_in_lotv_explaining/

Backspace box or Base box
Pros have resorted to the ‘backspace box’ method or simple ‘base box’ method. This means:
- You hit base cam (SPACE for most), or go to your base via a cam hotkey
- Box a queens that is around the hatchery
- Select ‘Spawn larva’
- Move mouse back over hatchery
- Click on hatchery to spawn larva
- Repeat

However, getting this process to work is quite tricky to learn, because:
- You can click before you selected the spell, resulting in that you won't spawn larvae. This becomes an issue if you want to do it fast.
- It requires a rhythm between mouse and keyboard
So for most of us it is quite slow. Beside that, it also requires 5 steps per base.

Fast Cast Larva Inject
The fast Cast larva inject works as follows:
- You hit base cam (Z in my setup YAKS) or go to your base via a cam hotkey
- Box a queens that is around the hatchery
- Move mouse back over hatchery
- Press X and C at the same time!
- Repeat

This requires 4 steps per base AND you are always certain that you have casted the spell on the hatchery! So less error prone and at least 20% faster.

How does this work?

X and C are both bound to selecting the spell as well as to simulating the click of the spell. So it doesn’t matter in which order you do it. Therefor you can press both keys at once and can be sure that it will be cast!

PS, That is so cool man!

Update: After discussing with many zerg players, I put back the inject method with the queens hotkeyed on 1 control group.

also, I changed the position of the upgrades to be more 'logical'
SPACE = speed upgrades
S = melee attack upgrades
D = missille attack upgrades
R = armor upgrades
4 = burrow upgrades

another update, the last one for this summer

larva injects
After investigating several inject methods, I come full circle and think that single press cams are the easiest to go. There are many ways to larva inject, but the pros use camera hotkeys without SHIFT-casting the larva inject spell because it causes the least wandering. Without shift, it is the fastest way of actually injecting your hatcheries, when using camera hotkeys. It can only be bested by using the base cam inject method, but that increases the chance of wandering queens.
So, in short:
- box queens early on in the game
- use the camera hotkeys with queens on 1 hotkey later in the game. This is hard to learn, use the trainer for that: https://yaksinjecttrainer.netlify.com/

Injecting can be done in 1.7s for 6 hatcheries by me, a mediocraly skilled player. The ultimate limit is around 1.1s. If you can hit 2.0s timings on the injects, without messing up the order, you are very fast!

upgrades for hatcheries
I put the upgrades for the hatcheries (Upgrade to Lair,Hive, Burrow, Pneumatized Carapece) on the F1-F12 keys. Basically you only use them once per match. By doing so, it is less likely that you upgrade the spells by accident.

philosophy on how to use
Hotkeys are fun, but they are ultimately not the most important thing in SC. Pros tend to use Grid with few adjustments. And they are still Grand Master. What matters is:
- you are super comfortable with knowing how to do something in the game (build evo chamber, inject!)
- you can manage engagements well

that is also how YAKS is setup, to make engagements very easy to do:
- 6 control groups to set up your army
- all the spells casting and move commands in easy reach
- camera hotkeys readily available to be able to react to harass

Other things have been given less priority, for example:
- upgrades sometimes at a weird spot
- you will need to reach sometimes to create units.

On top of that, we hope that making all the keys more reachable, you will have an easier time taking actual control over your army. But the path to GM doesn't end with a hotkey setup, go and practice build orders, micro challenges, ask for advice and have fun!

Holy cow, I can't believe this thread exists :D

I'm not on the TL forums much; just a casual user of the site. By chance I found YAKS when I first started playing seriously in HotS and debated whether I should use it or The Core; was a hardcore zerg fanboi and I loved your inject mechanism so I chose YAKS. After a few reinstalls my account forgot about the setup, and I forgot the name so I had to recreate most of it from memory :S

Anyway, I loved your system in HotS and I've just been homebrewing it since the LotV queen change (and then the reinstall). I'm away from home for a few weeks, so I can't try it right now, but I'm super excited to see what the new system is like :D

That is so cool to hear! Please let me know what you think of it. If you are an old YAKS user I also have a version available with the old home row positioning for LOTV. I think the current one is superior, but if you like the old one I can send it to you.

Okay, so I haven't played any real games with it, but the one thing that strikes me as extremely different between my homebrew setup and LOTV!YAKS is that in mine, I have six camera locations: ZXC and ASD, with Alt+ to set the location and Shift+ to jump there.

This has a bunch of minor conflicts, but the major philosophical difference here is that when it became clear that I had to drop the basecam inject, I also decided not to have a queen group. So I've been using a 2-click inject instead of a 1-click. I tried out that method that you're suggesting, and I can see it being nice. I still have a lot of wandering queens atm but will try to play with it to see if I can't make it work. (Also, the click after the camera jump is hardwired into my brain at this point so that throws it off a fair bit >.<)

School is starting so I'll probably keep using my old setup for a while; I'll give it a go after the break.

Hi Aleph,

Sounds interesting. What is the '2-click' inject method? Is it where you jump to the hatchery with a cam, box your queen, select inject spell and then click the hatch to do the inject? If that is the case, the proposed inject method is faster as it is easier to execute and has less steps. After practicing you will be able to inject 6 hatcheries within 2 seconds without errors. However, if your hand is already hardwired (as was mine) you can use the inject trainer to rewire your brain https://yaksinjecttrainer.netlify.com/

If you have wandering queens, you can press CAPS LOCK to stop them.

Using SHIFT to jump to cameras is in general tricky, as it doesn't allow you to queue commands that are under the ZXC and ASD buttons. Less tricky would be to use CTRL to jump to the cameras, but this could still cause accidental jumps, as you might CTRL+Click a unit in the game and then cast a spell on ZXC,ASD it will jump to a cam location if CTRL is still pressed.

Hope this helps!

Also, I am curious about your homebrew setup, if you could send it, then I can have a look

Sorry for bumping this thread, but from the stats I see that the amount of users that start using YAKS is pretty constant and I wanted to update YAKS for the new patch.

Major adjustments:
- Infestor: Microbial Shroud is now on R and Neural parasite is on S, as well as for the upgrades in the infestation pit (this is because the shroud should never be used on rapid fire, so we had to swap something)
- added hotkeys for new upgrades, also for protoss and terran
- added GRAVE as a rapid fire key next to S. This is used for Queens Spawn Larva and Viper Abduct

Minor adjustments:
- changed adding and creating control goups for the ALT+S and ALT+D groups.
- easier to set cams 7 and 8 by pressing SHIFT+V and SHIFT + B (better to set camera on spawning location)
- select all army is now on CTRL+TAB to make mistakes less likely (was CTRL+CAPS LOCK)
- upgrade of buildings is now GRAVE,ESCAPE, makes it a little easier to reach (was ESCAPE, F1)
- upgrade burrow and overlord speed are now on 4,5, makes it a little easier to reach (was F4,F5)
- zoom is now F1, F2. rotate is now F3, F4
- spells on F,R,4,5 now have rapid fire through CTRL+F,CTRL+R, etc.

These are very useful threads! Good job, I like to read the core and this threads when I have time, and try to improve myself with it. Certainly looking to contribute myself maybe.

I updated the layout. Most notably:

- Hold key is now on CAPS LOCK, making it more accessible
- Camera locations are now meant to be from Z to N instead of Z-C and then CTRL+Z to CTRL+C, which was a bit awkward. This saves 200 ms on average when injecting 6 hatches.
- Rapid fire on all spells with CTRL to makes the setup easier to learn
- Swapped spore and spine crawler (spore shoots up so it is on a higher key (S), spine hits down, so is on a lower key (SPACE)
- Put Pool at CapsLock and Evo and infestation pit are now on 4
- Swapped some spells around, so they are more logical:
-- SPACE = ground spells
-- R = air spells
-- S = targeting spells
- Made CTRL execute 'cancel targeting' (on top of right mouse button). If you now CTRL+click on a unit, or portrait, you are sure that no spell is selected, and the CTRL+click is actually executed

Because in the last update we let go of the staggered base locations, I made a change to make the creation and recalling of the cameras and Queens and Hatcheries more logical. This will help to learn the layout as there are fewer 'special cases' to be learned.

This means that all 'alternative' control groups (control groups 7,8 AND the queens group) can be used the same and the hatcheries group behaves the same as an army control group.

Recalling the alternative camera goes the same way as recalling an alternative control group

Hey, I love this layout and have been using it for a while. One issue I am running in to, is that when I want to cancel morphing of banelings (which cancel one by one) there is no rapidfire set up for the Tab key. I have tried doing it myself in the adding "Tab" to the TargetChoose list, but without succes.

As another test I tried changing it fully from Tab to H, and I managed to get it to work. Is there any idea on how you could add the rapid fire to the Tab key, as it is much more natural to reach than the H key.

Hi, you can't add rapid fire to the TAB key unfortunately. What you could do is change the Cancel and Stop. So move Cancel to ` (GRAVE) and Stop to TAB. I do think that you would also have to move the first upgrade of buildings to TAB. This can all be done directly in the in-game editor.

Then, to use Stop as rapid fire is simply holding the Stop button (~) No need to add it to the rapid fire list.

Hi, bobo38 from TheCore Lite :-) Have you been adding more stuff to your hotkey setup since original post?

After somebody asking for "camera + queen box + inject", i thought about your project and redirected here at least to see your approach: it's not easy at all to change TheCoreLite without changing the group/camera layout

Awesome, hotkey mapping!
The one thing I don’t get is why corruptor is mapped to caps lock, since it means that I need to press double amount of time per corrupter, what is the idea behind it?

Not sure how CapsLock works on Windows (linux player here).

You can try to hold CapsLock down, for other keys it repeats after some delay. This is working for sure for zergling and drones in this setup: basically select many larvae, hold key down, this will turn as many selected larvas into units as your money allows up to all selected larvaes. This might apply for CapsLock as well

Here a cool old blog about how key repeat works and how it can be tuned:
https://6pool.blogspot.com/2017/12/adrenal-for-your-keyrate.html

Depending on result, you can check the repeat rate w.r.t. to Zerglings (it might be divided by 2). In any case you can try to use CapsLock for something like "Hold position" or "Stop" and swap keys. Repeat is of no interest for "Stop" and "Hold Position".

Hi, noob Terran player here. Do you have a Terran setup for YAKS as well. Would much appreciate it! I’m currently using a slightly modified version of Grid and TheCore Lite lol, still want to get more suggestions since I don’t like pressing Z and X too much

For my keyboard, I use Caps Lock to Rapid Fire just fine.
