Hello TL,
i have one particular problem and want to know how others handle that. Lets say your zerg with an supply-capped army and just on the way to the terran base. Right at the middle of the map, you see dropships from different locations flying right to different expansions. How do you send back parts of your main army, because you didnt left enough at home for any reason.
a) I just select a part of my army and bind them to one hotkey and send that selection to one base to defend. After that, ill select another part, bind them to another hotkey and send them to that second droplocation. BUT my main-army hotkey still contains this units and i often pull back by mistake my defending troops. Now i have lost both expansions and my attack was weaker.
b) I select my complete army via hotkey and send all down to one location. Than shift-click the tiny images about 30 times and rebind my complete army. Now send again the "new-complete-army" to that second location and also shift-click 30 times and rebind my complete army. Now im able to control my complete army well, but i dont have both defending troops on any hotkey. But they arrive sometime and i could rebind them after. But until they arrive i have a long chain of zerglings running to that location.
It would be nice to have a hotkey that just delete current selection from all existing bindings. That would be awesome.
Ok now your turn! How do you handle that?
gl hf, BONKERS
P.S.: Please be kind. :-) Im only a dia-zerg who wants to improve. If hope my english is good enough to understand my concern and not such a pain for the community. ^^

Hello,
So it seems to me you did not play broodwar, huh Forget about hotkeys, just select some army and put them at the right locations, then select your remaining (attacking) army and just a move
otherwise, set up defense before you decide to move out, have some spores and spines and key locations, that can really help out a lot...
but to me it sounds like you are too dependent on using your 1 hotkey for your entire army... dont make that a habbit or your control will suffer later on...
hope it helped a little...

Yeah I never use hotkeys for the units I send back to deny drops, Another thing that helps is rallying any ling or roach eggs you may have hatching to the drop location. But mainly as mentioned above just pull back a little more then what you think is required to kill the drop (nothing worse than having to try and kill a drop twice!) and leave that squad to do their jobs, not to much you can do babysitting drop defending units anyway. Better to stay focused on your main army as it is important that it takes minimal damage

There is no way to mass deselect from a control group as far as I know and as much as it would be awesome. The best way to do what you describe is just to box group of units, send them, and then remake your main group and/or just control via boxing. I'd left some lings/bane at each base anyway even when moving out, but that wasn't really the point of the question (he people above that didn't read? :D)

When you're at 200/200 as Zerg, you should already be building a couple of spines+spores at every base. No excuses there -.-

Do A), wait for sub-armies go to defend drops. Box the remaining army and re-assign hotkey. ????? Profit.
|
If I'm right outside their door, I box a portion of my army to split off and defend drops where ever necessary, and box-select control the main army to attack the main.
Otherwise I take the time to redo hotkeys after I split.
|
I use method b). Personally I don't feel the need to hotkey units for defending drops, I just send them near my bases and use base cams to jump there and then box them.

Hi there,
I would advise you to use camera hotkeys. Using method B and the camera hotkeys, you can rapidly come back to your bases and control your army.

It helps me a lot! I already have that habbit to control the main part of my army with one control group. Its like i only can move something, if its on a hotkey. Thanks for all your comments.
My general bindings looks like: space => army 1 => broodlords/nydius/runby lings/harras/ovis for drops etc... depends 2 => like (1) 3 => infestors 4 => vipers 5 => overseer R => mutas/corrupter mousebutton1 => hatches mousebutton2 => queens I often just sticky my infesters/vipers/overseer to my mainarmy, so i can't forgott about them and finding myself in a battle without casters because i fucked up! And on the other hand, my infesters dont try to ram some tanks. Blizz really should add a ram attack for infesters. Fat expansive banelings! :-) I already make use of camera hotkeys. I have the "jump-to" at alt+qwe and alt+asd, but it still feels clumsy but my f-keys be also far away. I think i shoud practice more to make it more common. So your overall advice is:
1) practice army control also without hotkeys 2) make more use of camera hotkeys 3) build more static defense 4) let also some taskforce at home to defend any unforsight things
Ah one more thing. In my example b) i have to click ~30 times as fast as possible. I think i just suck, it feels like it takes forever. :-( Or is it possible to shift+leftclick somehow faster? Like that infestet-terran method or creep-spred mechanic whats described in another thread here.
greetings, BONKERS
