How many Queens should a zerg have?

I've been finding the Backspace method to be a bit inefficient, and have heard that using only 3 queens to inject, regardless of bases, is the easiest way in terms of control groups and opening up more supply for army.

Thoughts?

A more detailed post might be easier to answer. I'm not entirely certain what you are asking.

Generally I get 3 queens while im on 2 base to get some creep spread going and then after that I have roughly1 queen per hatchery.

Okay. Let's say you're on 5 bases. You only have 3 queens spewing on 3 hatches. The other bases are left to just spawn their own larvae without a queen.

Well then in this scenario you need 3 queens.. ? What is the question? Most players will get at least one queen per hatch, all spawning larva with maybe an extra queen for creep(although some stop this after midgame).

Your number of queens should always be at least number of hatches. If you're on 4 base, 4 hatches, you want 4 queens at least, all of them injecting. You need that to remax and trade late game.
Beyond that, I get 2-3 queens for creep spread by ~8 minutes. But that number is personal preference.

I'm talking to a rank #1 master's zerg and he's saying never go above 4 queens.

Queens take up two supply and you dont ever need more than four i guess. make more hatcherys if you need more larvae.

I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't get more than 5 queens unless you are going to do a push with them because they take up supply and at late game, larva isn't the issue, gas is. It is more reasonable to get more hatch rather than more queens.

It boils down to supply and hotkeys. Not only is it more efficient to have control over separate queens via different control groups, but you can maximize army efficiency with it as well.

3 queens for hatches. 1 for creep spread. Once spread is established you use the 4th for a macro hatch. Think about it though. If you're constantly spending your larvae and have good injects (5 base, for example) then you'll have 27 larvae to spend. That's already more than enough, coupled with the fact that you'll probably have more than that anyways.

At times I get 4 queens on 2 bases in order to push the creep out further while i take my third and get ready for a mid game push with roach or hydra. Then it's easy to just split off your 3rd and 4th queens to your additional bases as you take them, as at that point you can just use creep tumors or overlords to give you the creep you need. However, sometimes I only need 1 additional queen early for creep. I think that might just be due to preference. But i definitely would get at least 1 queen per hatch, until you get to the point in the game when larvae isn't an issue due to number of macro hatches and the fact that you're maxed.

If youre just doing injects and not worried about using them to defend anything I tend to go 3 or 4. Just depends on how I'm feeling. The only reason you ever need more is if you need early AA, are doing some crazy transfuse or monobattles.
I have a question...

I get an extra queen early for creep spread, two if it looks like early air, and then one queen per hatch, or if my injects have slipped (which they do) then i cut a couple of the extra supply and try use the energy the queens have built up. and the creep spread queen becomes an inject queen once creep has gotten started lol

i get 3 (sometimes +1 for spread) because of their supply usage. the drawback is that i can't use the backspace method anymore because of that .. i now inject via minimap (advantage: increases your minimap awareness) or position shortcuts (f4..f8)
