First of all I find it very strange that Maruders are so way back in the queue, I think every unit got prio over them exept for scvs. So if I have a army of Maruders and Medivacs and I want to stim, I first need to press TAB key to switch from medivacs to the maruders -_-..

Can you manually change the queue somehow?

you can, just tab it to the unit you want to lead, then regroup the whole group again. Now you have the designated unit as the leader units. :D

Tabbing between subgroups is your only option. You cannot change the default subgroup of a selection.

Let me start by saying you should probably not have the medivacs and marauders on the same hotkey. I usually set my bio to 1 and my medivacs to 2, then click on move for the medivacs and left click on one of my guys. Doing this makes them follow the army, but they'll also heal while moving. When you have them in one clump and you're giving them a move command with the army they won't stop to heal.

But, if you hold ALT and click on whatever unit type in the command window (below where it shows your hotkey tabs) it will just select all units currently selected of the type you clicked.

But seriously, having medivacs in same group negates their healing on the move which is a big drawback in itself.

so let's say you have marauders and medi's on 4
you press 4, tab to the marauders and then ctrl + 4?

can anyone verify this works?

It does, that or when making the group to begin with select the all the marauders first the shift+ctrl click the medivacs.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I'm 99% sure this doesn't work as I've tested it in the past and also 10 seconds ago. If you do the following:

1) Make a group of marauders and medivacs (e.g., on group 4)
2) Hit '4' to select the group
3) Hit 'tab' to select the marauder subgroup
4) Hit 'ctrl-4' to remake group 4
5) Select anything else (e.g., your cc)
6) Hit '4' to reselect the group

The re-selected group will default to the medivac subgroup first. Different variations such as grouping marauders first then shift-4 adding the medivacs results in the same configuration with medivacs as the first subgroup.

I'm not sure if this was behavior in the past that was fixed/broken, but as of right now, there's no way to change the subgroup priority in a selection.

I'll be happy to edit my post once someone can tell me where I went wrong above. But right now, what I've tested in game supports my conclusion.

And I've actually heard of this leader-change trick before on another forum recently (which is why I think it is either me doing something subtlety different or it is something that was recently fixed/broken). But when the original poster and I tried to reproduce the trick, we were not able to.

(p.s., based on the experimentation people have done below, you might want to edit your post >_<.)

I just tested this as well, just like Kambing, and was not able to make another unit leader, when switching groups and back again, the game simply prioritizes the same unit again.

To add to the conversation, this isn't limited to units, as I too have tried several times to change the 'leader' of the group. This same limitation appears when you add a building to a group. I normally have my Robo on 5, and when I add the Stargate, it becomes to 'leader' and I'm forced to tab through to produce from my Robotics.

A priority list would be handy!
When you are prepared, there's no such thing as pressure.

Thanks Fritti. I'm curious to know if the leader trick is something that people have actively done in the past or if its just information they're received second hand. There's evidence that this may be a bug since the group tab icons change based on the subgroup that is selected when you make the group. So the game is at least distinguishing the "selected" subgroup in one case.

I put my entire army into a main group (3)
And then I split up my specialized troops into other groups (4, 5)
And now I'm practicing to keep my marines split up across control group 7-0 to help me improve my marine split micro

So, for example, were I in your situation I'd have it like this

Army on 3
Marauders on 3+4
Medivacs on 3+5
Marines on 3 and spread across 7+8+9+0

That way I can easily "a-move" my army where I want to, but be able to split them apart when the battle comes.

In defense of the OP, his *actual* question was not the question he really was asking for.

If we were to take it literally, he was asking if you can change how groups are spread out in your control group. The answer is two words--you can't.

But what he really was asking is how to properly make more efficient either his hotkey setup or his unit control--more specifically his unit control. Judging by his example (being able to select marauder but not medivacs) he is attempting to incorporate army control through group splits while still sticking to his 1 control group setup. That takes more than just 1-2 sentences to actually explain since the real answer involved unit control outside of unit groups. Box selecting, ctrl selecting, etc...

But apart from that; yes you are totally right.

I would like to confirm that there is no way to change the default unit selected when pressing a control group.
Tabbing unit you have the unit desired selected, re-defining the control group, then selecting it will NOT work.

I currently have a control group of marines, marauders, hellions, medivacs, vikings, and tanks selected.
I can NOT, in any way, alter the priority. Currently it goes Marines, Tanks, Vikings, Medivacs, Hellions, Marauders.
It should be noted that the technique of redefining the control group (repressing Ctrl+1 in this case) WILL change the unit pictured next to the 1 control group on screen. But again, it makes absolutely NO difference to the unit order when I press 1.
