And 1 unit is roughly 1 zealot. So xel'nagas give you 22 zealot-lengths of vision! (For reference, most buildings and units have 9 zealot-lengths of vision).

Also if you turn Map Gridding on, you'll actually see the individual squares that are equal to 1 SI in Starcraft.

It seems like the investment is quite small and the benefit potentially large (since having the motions of your 5000 mineral army monitored can hurt you a lot more than the cost of a detector). Overseers are cheap, and ravens have other uses. Why don't the pros do this? Is it because of the APM cost, or is it not cost effective after all?

What would you recommend to be the "solid" opening on TvZ ( no map dependance )

I'm definitely no pro and I don't know about overseers, but I'm hesitant about making ravens in TvP for a couple of reasons. Generally I want a reactor on my starport and not a tech lab, and because my raven gets focused quite a lot, switching back and forth to make ravens becomes expensive, both time and gas wise. I could make a new starport with a tech lab specifically for raven production, but that would be quite expensive and with multiple orbital commands (scans), marginally beneficial. However, I'm expecting ravens to become a larger part of TvP due to the fact that their point defense drone can be amazing if used correctly.

This is not a direct answer to the original question, but I do recommend terran and zerg to always bring detection. The risk of getting raven sniped is even less since TvP engages in less battles than ZvP. Nothing annoys me as a P more than not having vision. Perhaps the pros don't do it because they can detect the disturbance caused by observer and scan and kill. Still, you can see that they miss it a lots of time, and thus have dire consequences (esp when tanks unsiege and the toss knows it.)

I matched up with someone by that name and I would like to know, if anyone can confirm one way or the other. His manner was quite convincing, however his playstyle was not. I can edit in a replay if needed.
