A "standard" protoss build order/opening

fedexfan Bulgaria40 Posts October 08 2010 09:36 GMT #1 Hello everyone, recently i have been thinking about my early game build order and i realized that no matter what the map/matchup is, i'm always opening with 9 pylon 12 gate 14 gas 17 pylon 17 cyber core 18 second gas and then chrono boost on 3 probes and make a first stalker when my core finishes. Even if i play against zerg i usually dont make a zealot first except when i scout and early pool (marine rush, double gate.., i always scout with the 12 gate probe) So my Q is is that build order considered standard or am i doing something "wrong"? Kirb Germany900 Posts October 08 2010 09:40 GMT #2 The 2nd pylon is build at 16 in the standard 12 gate opening if I remember correctly. But yeah its pretty standard. Also imo the 13 gate is used more often. Watch liquipedia for standard build orders. Edit: If it's viable to skip the 1st Zealot against Zerg depends on your follow up.

Gnial Canada907 Posts October 08 2010 10:37 GMT #4 What you are doing is perfectly fine - I am personally partial to the 12-gate in the PvT matchup, and do it frequently in the PvP matchup as well. However, note that the 12-gate is not the best "economic" build. If you scout after you make your 9-pylon, the only way to constantly keep making probes and chronoing probes is if you make a 14-gate. If you wait to scout until after you make your first gateway, it is possible to 13-gate while continually chronoing probes. @fedexfan: In PvZ Huk 14 gates, and he isn't even precise about it. He throws down his 14 gate at like, 200 minerals just because hes busy microing his probe. I've even seen him get distracted and 15-gate one game, and at no point did he appear unsafe even though he was in close positions on metalopolis. So I would say that while a 13-gate may feel late in, say, a PvP matchup, its fine in the PvZ matchup.

Chicodog Denmark154 Posts October 08 2010 10:39 GMT #5 My pesonal opinion is that you should mix it up a bit. Sometimes execute an early rush. Sometimes do early phoenix or void ray. It's nice to have a solid standard bo to use in most games. But when you see an opportunity to inflict some early damage, you should be able to.

fedexfan Bulgaria40 Posts October 08 2010 10:53 GMT #6 Yeah mixing things up is the problem i guess, because i always do my "standard" build order unless i scout a cheese. I will have to try something different today, maybe a little 14 gate
