I've not paid a lot of attention to pro toss players as far as pylon/building placement goes but watching Day[9]'s recent dailies on protoss I've wondered where your first pylon should be. Obviously vs zerg your going to put it at your ramp to block off but in PvP and PvT I'm curious about it.
If you place your pylon right next to your nexus you gain two advantages, quick trip back to mining, and it also helps protect the pylon from getting surrounded if you add more buildings to wall it off. I know that terran and toss will both likely come at you with ranged units but it will still make their surround awkward.
There is a downfall I see with this and it seems very minor. Approx 1/3rd of your pylon's building range is taken up. This dose not seem to be an issue, in fact, I think that the benefits out weigh this problem.
EX: ---Nexus ----------Nexus ----------Nexus ------Gate-PP-Cyber ------Gate-PP-Cyber -------------Gate
Then there is the other choice of your early game building placement where you really just place your pylon any where and don't surround it with buildings thus leaving it open to full 360 degree surrounds from melee or ranged units while giving you 100% psi(?) to build/warp in with.
I welcome any further discussion on building placement, this was just the first issue that came to my mind.

When I play against Terran I often spread out my pylon so I can get full vision of base to spot any Medivac drop, for Protoss in my experience its best to put your buildings and pylons near your nexus because Stalkers can snipe your gateway but in return you are vulnerable to mass zealot rush but you can use sentry FF block that.

yeah i dunno how many games are won or lost over pylon placement i think its pretty clear building the first 2 right next to nexus for econ purposes is solid, its what i do thats for sure

Vs terran, first pylon goes near the base in case of any funny business (fast proxy reaper so that the zealot can sacrifice tank so I don't lose probes, easier to reinforce vs really really early pushes), and from there, pylons go to the edges of the base and buildings in the center (to force them to commit to getting into my base if they want to get any of my tech, and that gives me more time to intercept drops.
PvP, depends. If I'm 2-gating, the gates go down as part of a choke to funnel enemy zealots (assuming opponent is also 2-gating). Otherwise, gateways go around the base so they don't all go down at once if the opponent manages to get into my base. Same with pylons (with important buildings in 2-3 fields at once)

I've been trying to think of the best building placements lately and what types of advantages I could get from it.
Usually I try to spread out my gateways so my opponents don't know exactly how many I have. However, maybe it's better to keep them all in a tighter group if possible in order to chronoboost them faster if need be. When it gates to the late game I will also have some at each of my expansions so that if one expo gets killed I will not lose too many of my gateways.
For pylons I try to have multiple powering my buildings and also have some around the outskirts of my base so I can scout drops or overlords better.
For tech structures and forges against terran I try to put them in a place that will be the toughest for a drop to get them. Against zerg I try to hide them somewhere in my base that the zerg will not likely scout.
Does anyone do something different that they think is better?

My Sim City is pretty garbage, so I'll leave that talk to the experts, but I definitely try to make sure that my pylons for PvZ help form walls/chokes to funnel zerg units in... and in PvT I try to make sure my pylons are spread out (but still multiple powering each structure) so that I can avoid getting completely shut down by a well placed nuke.
