Amount of lings you make depends on what you scout and what matchup of course. Most of the time you can afford to sneak in quite a few drones before starting ling production, depends on what you scout though. I send an earlier drone scout than 14 so this allows me to sneak a lot of drones if I see them not being aggressive. I've been almost exclusively using this build recently vs T.

My ideal expand timing is generally after my first queen. After my spawning pool finishes, I research zergling speed, make a queen, and you'll find yourself with a surplus of 300 minerals rather quickly even when constantly producing lings/drones. If the terran is going for early harass, I'll build my second queen before my natural hatchery and make a few extra zerglings. How many zerglings you make is largely a matter of taste. I usually make 2-4 when my spawning pool finishes as they're incredibly useful for killing enemy scouts and that odd supply depot/pylon blocking your natural. Often you'll have to make more if you scout early aggression by a Terran player. After my initial lings, I'll often switch to drones for a little while, then build a few more zerglings before really dedicating myself to building an economy. I find it extremely comforting in ZvT to have a group of 8-12 zerglings around the map, and since 14 gas 14 pool is based around early speed, it would be a shame not to have a decent amount of zerglings at all times. Speed zerlings are great at fending off early marine/hellion harass, and is a great way for zerg to keep map control in the early game.

If you are playing against P I transition to hydra with a quick spire after to counter the 3 legged 1a of doom....if you are playing against T, I transition to muta into ling/bling/muta. I agree with him. It feels like if you expand before 20-22 it's very easy for your hatch to get canceled. Make enough lings based on what they have but typically start off with 4-6.
