Map of the Month - May 2014 Results

MotM May 2014 is done. The community has spoken. The winners have been chosen. And I don't want to make you read another wall of text so here they are!

1st Place was claimed by NewSunshine with his map AEM Sol Dios, which might very well become the most popular vacation destination this summer! He is going to take home 60$

2nd Place goes to Icetoad and his beloved map Nimbus! He has been with this map through good times and bad times, and it is finally paying off! He will receive 40$.

3rd Place goes to eTcetRa and his map Samsara RE, which was considered one of the favorites. But the competition was too strong. Nonetheless he will not go home empty handed, as he will receive 20$!


4th Place went to Silt by Samro2225am

We are also giving out a 15$ special award this month! Despite not making it into the last 5, Korhal Carnage Knockout by SidianTheBard did truly stand out in originality. With 8 spawn positions (opponent spawning in one of the 3 spawns furthest away), the map moves away from the usual main/nat setup, creating an interesting dynamic. It is concepts like these we hope to see further explored! Oh, and it is a beautifuly piece of work, too!

With that said, we are already gathering submissions for MotM June 2014!

All you need to do is to create a map thread following the forum guidelines (please include a top down overview) AND publish the map on battle.net.

Please make sure you published your map correctly! Unfortunately there were some maps which were nowhere to be found and couldn't be considered. However, they will be considered in the following month once they are published correctly.

Since we had a prize pool consisting of donations from the mapmaking community, many more have contacted me asking how they could contribute as well.
So I have decided, with the permission of Plexa, to set up a paypal account people can donate to. So if you want to support MotM, send your donations towards

sc2motm[at]gmail.com

via paypal.


Starting this month, 50% of the donations will be used for the competition prize pool. The other 50% will be saved up for upcoming MotM events (Tournaments or Showmatches, still TBD)

Nothing will go into our own pockets!

That being said, I'm quite happy that Sol Dios won (congratulations to NewSunshine btw!) since it is actually a solid map and Nimbus would be bad advertising for the whole MOTM thing due to lack of balance not being very popular outside the mapmaking sub-community. Speaking of advertising, is there anything being done with regard to "spotlighting" maps and "giving them the attention they deserve"? Is there a news article on the winning map coming up or anything of that sort?

You do not need to submit your maps in the thread by linking respective map threads, to my understanding. This seems to be popular practice but is not necessary.

Any map thread published in the month of June is eligible for the next MotM, maps that have been considered for this MotM will not be reconsidered next month, unless they are posted again with extensive/significant changes.

I made sure that part of my donation would be allocated to promote innovative maps. When lefix showed me Sidian's map, I instantly loved it. I wasn't expecting a first-month innovation prizewinner (it won't happen every month, only when merited), but I'm pleasantly surprised to say the least.

Great winner. Though a little too standard for my liking but whatever.

Two thumbs up for the vertical/horizontal ramps. No clue why mapmakers don't use them more.

I have reached out to contacts in different organisations, as well as Blizzard, to make sure they see the results. I have also posted the results to reddit and I believe the results will get spotlighted here as well.

That is indeed correct. Any map with a proper map thread is being considered, provided it is also published on battle.net.

Lefix, many thanks for organizing the new motm series. Nice competition, but I'd be happy to see a more elaborated voting system. I do not see why you hide the exact results in spoilers and also the 4th and 5th place...

Good to note that these 5 together actually create a quite good pool of various play styles.

edit: With how close the percentages are i could also imagine that another voting system (5 to 1points for 1st to 5th place) would bring different results.

This is what i thought at first glance, making a long distance between the nat and the blinking point into the main will decrease the power of time warps preventing T units to make it to the right spot in time, and thus make blink much less powerful. I don't think will be a problem, but then again i'm not that good. Anyway i'd like this map to make it into some competitive environment.

Plus, denying completely these blink spot also prevent the T from scouting with a reaper. This way, making it difficult but still possible for blink to come in the main is favoring the T IMO with the double reaper scouting pathways.
