Week three of the OGN CL. First matches of Groups E & F. Double-elim format, so the winners of the 1st round will advance to the Winners' Bracket, while the losers go down to the Losers' Bracket. Here's what happened this past Tuesday:

Group E

1) Grrr...(P) ("Guillaume Petry") < [Na'G]Doggi (T) ("Choi Soo-bum") - Paradoxxx

Despite the odds in favor of Guillaume walking all over Choi in this one (Guillaume practically wrote the book on toss domination on islands), Choi never fell for Grrr's fast carrier build and gol dropped the hell outta the poor Protoss champion. So much for Guillaume making a splash in his return to the Korean tournament scene. The guy's still undoubtedly one of the top players around - just has a tough time putting it all together in Korean tournaments. Weird...

2) [Oops]Spoon (T) ("Shim Sung-soo") < JulyZerg (Z) ("Bak Sung-joon") - Nostalgia

Spoon had his chances, but showed woefully bad MM unit control and let victory slip from his grasp. July was just ok, but Spoon should stick his namesake up his ass for playing the way he did...

Group

3) GoRush (Z) ("Bak Tae-min") > Sync (T) ("Byun Gil-sup") - Shin Gaema Gowon

Who could have guessed that GoRush (one of the weakest ZvT players around) would come out on top v the father of the famed Sparks Terran style, Sync (2002 OGN NATE champion and among the elite TvZ users in Korea)? Sync sent a sizable MM+tank battle group to take out GoRush's main, while GoRush sent a hydra/lurker doom drop to Sync's main. The two got the job done and it was an elimination game after that. Bak got another expo up in a hurry tho, while Sync could only keep his CC floating in the air looking for a parking spot.

4) GGon (P) ("Lee Hyun-seung") > iloveoov (T) ("Choi Yeon-sung") - Guillotine

Despite all the whining from the Protoss community, Guillotine remains, statistically, a very toss-friendly map. iloveoov's one of the most feared Terran users online, but GGon's experience playing in TV tournaments carried the day in the end. Fast zealot/goon + shuttle harrass kept Choi spinning and seeing stars throughout the match. Choi eventually managed to put together a substantial metal force, but that got smashed to bits by GGon's mass toss counter.

No. The CL is double-elim format. Grrr's in the Losers' Bracket now. He'll play Spoon on Guillotine on Aug. 26. If he loses that, he's out for good.

Seriously tho - if he loses to Spoon on Guillotine, Guillaume prolly doesn't deserve to advance. Spoon has a fantastic TvP record - but I still think he sux to high heaven.

so does grrr... i know he has a huge history behind, he is loved because being a non korean pro and idol of a lot of protoss but face it, grrr... is not a challenge to the real gods of BW, he can face a couple of underpaid pros but when its comes to the real deal he can do nothing but to sadly lose.

spoon is not a greath threath but IMO i think hes enought to send grrr home with no wins.
Im back, in pog form!

mensrea, you say GoRush is one of the weakest ZvT players around, but I thought he was a supposedly "solid Z practice partner" for Xellos when Xellos had to play vs Yellow in the OGN finals.

Could you explain this more plz? ?

True I was also questioning that ... first when I read it in the OGN finals preview - because I knew gorush is one of the weaker zvt players.

Now you're the kind of poster I like: someone who asks for an explanation first instead of pouncing at even the first hint of inconsistency. Good stuff.

Regarding your query: Traditionally, yes, GoRush's weakest mu has been his ZvTs, but that's really in relation to his success in ZvP and especially ZvZs (in which he excels). He's still a "solid" all-around Zerg player (lest we forget, he is the winner of the WCGC - beating none other than NTT in the final), and any player should be lucky enough to have him to practice with, tho he's still no Yellow in the ZvT mu and he still has a big question mark over his head when it comes to ZvTs. Think of GoRush as an upgraded version of Jinnam (as he currently is), tho this comparison isn't perfect.

Anyway, I think there would have been less confusion - and I would have been more accurate - if I had written that GoRush is "one of the weakER" ZvT users in the Korean pro gaming circuit rather than "one of the weakEST."

Hope this clears things up.

Just a little thing: it's actually Guillaume Patry, not Petry.

Just wanted to clarify.

I'm not annoyed at all. And I don't think anyone was being critical. They just wanted me to explain an inconsistency and I obliged.

Mandalor, it looks like you took my opening paragraph in my response to Day[9] as sarcasm. It wasn't. I meant what I said. I was being sincere. Day's smart enough to ask for an explantion to something that doesn't seem right. It's an attitude I appreciate. Not many people online are like Day: they usually jump at the chance to point out other people's mistakes (usually in an effort to prove to others and themselves how rebel-smart they are), often without really even thinking things through.

He didnt beat nTT in the finals, he beat another korean in a ZvZ.

NTT got third.

Gorush won WCGC, over I.Love_Star in the finals. NTT got third.

I'm not entirely sure who among Gorush and I.Love_Star won the winners bracket, i think it was Gorush.
