[PL] September Slump

[image loading]Shinhan Proleague 2008/2009 Coverage by Riptide and Heyoka

Hello and welcome to the last Proleague update for the 2008-09 season. It's been a good year for the league in general, and with the final it gave us on 8/8/9, we cant say we have any complaints about how everything turned out. Without a doubt, it was the best finale of the season, and both SKT T1 and Hwaseung OZ get our applause for taking it to an exciting Ace match finish. If you've been living under a rock (lucky you then, because you've avoided all the Fantasy-vs-Jaedong-vs-Fantasy-BBBonjwa discussion), and haven't actually seen the game itself, here it is -

+ Show Spoiler [SPL 2008-09 Grand Finals Day 2 Ace Mat…] +

In fact, if you are one of the only people on the planet to have not watched that game, then you'd do well to have a read through our Grand Finals coverage TLFE, Masters of the Universe.
Having said that, it's been kind of boring in the aftermath of the finals, and while the individual leagues did deliver some excitement towards the end of last month, September has been mostly bland. Thus, it is with at least a little excitement that we begin to discuss a Proleague related event that is set to take place at the end of the month.

Enjoying the Offseason
[image loading]

According to experts, progamers are enjoying the offseason significantly more than we are.

While the other leagues have all but gone to sleep, Proleague is still here delivering some half-decent content in the off-season. No, we don't mean the Ultimate Proleague Championship. As exciting as Special Force and Starcraft sounds, we're not too psyched about that ourselves. While Proleague Map Testing matches do look interesting, what we're really excited about is the Shinhan Proleague 2008-09 Allstar Game on September 27th, 2009. This event is unique in that it's allowing fans pick the players they want to see, and if you haven't already, we encourage you to register an account on the KeSPA site and begin voting. The top two voted players from each race will be put in a pool with twelve others - one nominee from each team, meaning that 18 of SC's best will battle it out for the title. As of now, the fan vote standings are as follows -

Looking Forward
As of this writing, all Free Agency related drama has subsided, Jaedong is back in OZ (and therefore several thousand fanboys are no longer in therapy), go.go is back in Sparkyz, and basically nothing big came of the FA period. Apart from Midas moving to Wemade, which interestingly happened outside the FA period, there no big changes to teams, meaning that pretty much everyone is going go into 2009-10 with the same basic lineups, a fact that raises some interesting questions.

What will happen to STX, the team that ripped through R5 and then got stomped in their first playoff game? Their frontman is now the newly crowned MSL champion, and this if anything should strengthen his game, and by extension, theirs. They have some serious depth in their lineup, and if the new season is going to favour any one team, it's these guys. If they continue to perform and improve the way they did in R5 of 08-09, 09-10 should be a breeze for them.

KT Rolster, after many name changes, is going to be playing as a team again, and with their failure to make the playoffs fresh on their minds, will no doubt be looking to start off the next season with a bang. Flash is there as last season's MVP, and is certainly capable of rolling them through a few rounds on his own. Ultimately though, he's going to need the likes of Luxury and Forgg to step up and share the workload. Their new found trump however is obviously Violet, a Protoss that is by all accounts the player to help KT make up for their lost playoff spot last season.

OZ went through a long period of uncertain with Jaedong set to retire, but he's back now, and has publicly declared his love for Hwaseung. The question on everyone's mind is this though - can he carry them through for another season? Interestingly, in the Grand Finals, Lomo and Backho really did step up to deliver some wins, but one wonders whether they can manage to do this consistently in the regular season. Despite their motives in making such statements being somewhat unclear, LJD's parents spoke the truth when they said that he was "tired and overworked for the last year and a half." If Jaedong manages to pull them through another season, OZ just might make the playoffs again. If he fails though, the team is going to fall hard and fast, and they desperately, desperately need to supplement their lineup with players who can offer him some sort of support.

CJ losing to OZ in the Semi Finals was one of the biggest upsets of the entire playoffs, and this loss no doubt weighed heavily on Effort, a kid who carried them single-handedly against KHAN just a week earlier. All in all though, 2009-10 looks great for this outfit, and with the likes of Kwanro, Skyhigh, Effort, and dare we say Movie now more experienced by an entire season, CJ has the beginnings of a stellar lineup. As long as they keep pushing their youngsters, and making sure that old timers like Iris and Savior strive do their part as well, CJ should have no problem making the playoffs next year.

If WCG is any indication, Stork is back and kicking it. The question is, can FailBatHero and Jangbi support him as he drives Samsung through the first round of PL? Granted, great had an OK run in the playoffs, and they'll want to foster his growth as much as they can in the group stages this year. Though it's impossible to write them off completely, their playoff run was far from spectacular, and while they should have no problems against the bottom of the league, they'll need to pull their socks up if they hope to set some momentum in R1 that will carry them through to a playoff spot at the end of the season.

SKT T1 by far are the favourites for this round. With Bisu leading from the front, and Fantasy, Best and more recently Hyuk having the potential to cause a splash when needed, the defending champions have one of the strongest lineups in the league at the moment, and alongside STX are the top contenders for a clean R1 run.

Sparkyz, the Leta led lethal outfit that made it to the playoffs last season crumbled and crumbled hard because of their fatal flaw - their reliance on the lone Terran. If Yarnc and type-b's post-PL performance are any indication though, the team could have a very different 2009-10 in store for them. Indeed, if Leta gets some much needed support, they're a strong contender for a playoff spot at the end of this season.

With Nada, Mind and Baby already aboard, one wonders why Wemade would want another Terran. Whatever their reasons may be, however, the acquisition of Midas could prove to be very useful, especially when considering the ways in which the likes of Mind and Baby could benefit from such an acquaintance. If we're saddened by one thing though, it's the fact that given the sheer number of Terrans on his new team, we'll probably see this old schooler play even less for Wemade than he did for SKT. Given his seniority, we're also forced to admit that this might be the Terran's last dance.

From GO to SKT to Wemade, Midas' third team may well be his last.

Woongjin, eSTRO and ACE have been a the bottom of PL for a while, and there's no reason to believe that 2009-10 will be any different for them. Though GosI[Flying]'s all kill in the STX Masters certainly raised eyebrows, we doubt that he'll be able to do much when the rosters are filled out with the stars again and R1 gets under way. Similarly, it's been a while since we've associated Upmagic or hyvaa with results, making 2009-10 look very bleak for these guys.

Woongjin are in a similar situation. With free on the fritz and Zero having virtually no support, we can't see Stars making it out of the bottom four. In a league dominated by giants like SKT and STX, one almost feels sorry for teams like this who have virtually nothing to pit against them. All in all, can't say it's going to be a good season for Zero and friends.

While ACE is certainly the fan favourite among the bottom three, and as much as we'd personally like the Xellos/Yellow/Reach combo to make splashes, experience tell us that they're not going to do much more than take a few games off a big name, like Yellow did with Bisu in R5.

Finally, we're going to take a look at an outfit of former Proleague champions who have had a couple of disastrous seasons. Will HERO rise again? Plexa decides.

Picking Up the Pieces
by Plexa
[image loading]

MBC is a team which has been completely gutted of all it's former glory. In the 08-09 season they also lost their old head coach, and a new guy took over. Pusan and Saint dominated Round 1, while Pusan and Sea took the reigns mostly for Round 2, the entire team collectively sucked in Round 3, then Light emerged as the only half decent player on MBC in both Rounds 4 and 5. As a result of this disasterous season, the new head coach got fired and Coach Ha, the old coach, was reinstated.

The job for MBC over the next six months is not to place first in Proleague, nor is it to place in the top six. They need to rebuild and refocus themselves. MBC lack a senior player for other players to gather behind and support. Light is not this player, he is simply the player on MBC who isn't slumping at the moment. They need a truly good player to make Starleagues and a bunch of good new players to start replacing the last generation of MBC player. MBC have already showcased some new talent in Ace and we know there is some potential within Air as well. How MBC develop these rookies is going to define how they do over the next few seasons - if they turn out like Jaehoons well then MBC is fucked. But if they all turn out into a bunch of mini-Sea[Shield]'s then MBC is back in business.

The old coach ran the team into the ground by destroying MBC's practice environment. With Coach Ha's return I have high hopes for the old healthy practice environment to make a comeback; and from there the results will flow.

With that we wrap up the speculative component of this update and head into something we hope to make a regular feature of PL updates for 2009-10. Sports fans, please welcome Pangshai with what we hope will the first of many battle reports for Proleague coverage. Leta vs Stork on Outsider has been one of the better offseason games so far, and if you haven't watched it already, we recommend you do so before reading the report.

Leta vs Stork @ Outsider
by Pangshai
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +

The game begins on outsider with Leta spawning at the top position, and Stork on the left. Both players stick to standard builds with Leta walling and opening fac port, against Stork's 1gate ob expo. The first confrontation takes place as Leta's drop of 2 tanks lands behind Stork's warping mineral only expo, and from behind the minerals, proceed to lay waste to the freshly built nexus.

Although Stork makes the initial mistake of not cancelling the nexus, he otherwise responds pretty well to the drop, not wasting units trying to take out the Terran units, instead waiting for the tanks' departure to retake the expansion, accepting the 400 minerals as lost. Following his successful drop, Leta opts for a double expand to put him firmly ahead economically, and Stork, having scouted this with his observer, follows suite, taking his nat as well.

Some minor harass now commences, and both players begin teching up and adding more production facilities, Stork moving towards arbiter tech with 4 gates and a 4th base in the bottom right main and Leta adding more factories for a total of 7. A calculated, risky move by Stork here, teching and expanding with few units, but vs Leta's late factories, it looks like to be a successful gambit, pulling Stork back from his economic deficit.

Shortly after the completion of his factories and a couple of production rounds, Leta pushes out of his choke with a significant army of tank/vult, but Stork has a pretty big army. Instead of pushing aggressively and potentially losing his army, Leta chooses to sit in the centre of the map with his tanks and send his vultures out to harass. 4 vultures make their way to Stork's nat, where they net a few probe kills, and force Stork to chase them with fresh zealots out of his gateways. Thanks to some poor micro from Stork, he loses a number of those zealots to mines, making Leta's harass all the more cost effective.

Following this, Leta moves out with yet another group of vultures, this time failing to do significant probe damage at Stork's bottom right expansion, his units falling to Stork's army and defending cannons. With an arbiter out, Stork now goes in for the kill, his army swooping in on Leta's defensive tank line in the centre of the map. Without vulture support, Leta's tanks fell quickly once Stork's army made it past the minefield, a stasis on 4 of his tanks simply rubbing salt into the wound. Stork's army, however, is not without casualties, and he is forced to retreat before destroying the 4 tanks in stasis.

Having temporarily taken out the threat of a push from Leta, Stork quickly begins an expansion at the bottom right nat, which is immediately found by a roving group of vultures. Stork, once again, is too impatient to wait for observers, and ends up suiciding a bunch of units to mines. Despite this, Stork still looks to be in a pretty commanding position, with 3 additional mining bases coming up, and arbiter tech, which has proven to be very strong on this map. Leta on the other hand, has a good sized army, +2 weapons upgrades, and a decent number of bases that Stork, somewhat ineffectively, tries to harass.

As the harass is taken care off, both players return to joustling for position on the map, Leta pushing his army down towards Stork's bottom right expos, and Stork running around to counter at Leta's nat. This eventually culminates in a battle that results in most of Stork's army melting before the power of Terran metal, some unfortunately late stasis, and poor angle of attack possibly contributing to its demise.

Having won a major battle, Leta fearlessly pushes into Stork's bottom right bases, taking down the bottom right nat, and lots of probes at the bottom right main. Stork, however, has been macroing diligently, and with a freshly rebuilt army, takes out Leta's unsupported tanks. A rather poor decision from Leta to push so quickly, as a couple of production rounds from his factories would've provided enough vultures for a potentially game ending attack. Regardless, the damage done was not insigificant.

Now, in a long game like this where expoes come up, get destroyed, mine out, it gets pretty confusing, but a basic base count excluding worker saturation puts both players at 4. Unfortunately for Stork, Leta's vultures arrive at his "outside" mineral only before his cannon warps in, and swiftly, they lay waste to all the probes. Leta then follows this up by dropping a tank behind the minerals of another of Stork's expansions, forcing Stork to pull his probes and taking down the nexus. Stork, joining in on the expo-killing fun, retaliates with a recall at one of Leta's expansions where the SCVs are pulled to fight, and eventually lost.

After taking potshots at each other's expansions, both players seem to be itching for a large clash. Leta moves out with a big +3 weapons ugpraded army, and Stork engages with a sizable army reinforced by a couple of arbiters. Stasis immediately goes off on the vessels, and with Leta's tanks slightly clumped up, it seemed a second stasis could put Leta in a difficult position. Unfortunately, either due to greed or the lack of energy, Stork does not stasis, and with the arrival of more vultures from Leta, Stork pulls back, but most of his army has been reduced to rumble.

As Leta's army now heads down to finally take out Stork's bottom right base (and the associated "inside" mineral only), Stork musters up a small army and makes a guerilla attack on one of Leta's expoes. Expo counts at the moment put Stork at 5 mineral patches, and Leta at 2 quickly depleting bases. Despite this, Stork, by some miracle, has somehow managed to pull a huge army out of thin air, and sends it charging into Leta's choke, taking out some defending units. Hoping to catch Leta's returning army out of position, Stork immediately pulls back out to the centre of the map, where he finds Leta's tanks already sieged up. He engages anyway, and emerges victorious with a good goon spread to reduce splash damage.

Stork, now with map control, retakes the bottom right nat, while Leta mines from the other side of Stork's abandoned mineral-only for 2 bases that are dangerously dry. In a half hearted attempt to harass Leta's right side expo, Stork recalls a small group of dragoons, but a couple of defending tanks handle the incursion with the help of mines and defensive matrix. Having held th dragoons, and with a number of tanks fresh off the production lines, Leta begins to push out, establishing another base at his outside mineral only, sieging his tanks defensively and planting lots of mines. His vultures then proceed south to Stork's newly taken bottom right expo, and although there is a group of dragoons defending, he deals a tonne of damage, killing probes and dragoons before Stork's main army arrives.

Following this, Stork gravely underestimates the size of the defending Terran army, and gives the command for his soldiers to attack Leta's new expo. The well set up tanks rain fire on the Protoss units, and although Stork manages to take out command centre, he loses the majority of his army. Leta then simply unsieges the remainder of his tanks, and heads for Stork's final mining base, where Stork tries his best to stop him, but fails, typing in the GG.

Overall a very entertaining game, although Stork's insistence on engaging the Terran army head on, while providing some huge and intense battles, was not exactly a very wise choice. Ultimately what caused him the game was his inflexibility and refusal to abuse arbiters on this recall friendly map. Leta on the other hand was well acquainted with the idea of terrain abuse and came out on top due to his harass.

Thank you
Since this is our final coverage post for the season, we thought it would be a good space to put together a massive thank you list. A lot of people helped with Proleague coverage this season, and the playoffs in particular were crazy, with dozens of people contributing across multiple articles. A SPL 2008-09 thank you list, however, must begin with two names in particular. SpiralArchitect, and Fzero, thank you for the coverage you guys dished out throughout the first four rounds of this season. Without you, SPL on TL would not be here today.

Now, on to the rest of the list. InToTheWow and Manifesto7 (Welcome to the Jungle) were the first guest writers for PL coverage in the playoffs. Following in their footsteps, the likes of Mikeymoo (What a Weekend), Ghostclaw (Ready to Rumble), Atrioc (Wonderful Wizard), Hot_Bid (Conquered), Fanatacist and Pholon (Crossing the Rubicon) all contributed to playoff coverage. Without their time and effort, PL updates would not have been as lively or diverse as they were, and Heyoka and I would like to thank them for their hard work and their unique ability to put up with our nagging and deliver clear, concise prose on time.

Of course, during the playoffs, we also grew accustomed to getting writeups out just hours after an event finished, and it must be said, none of this would have been possible if not for crazy translators like Konadora and Ghostwriter. The former in particular deserves a special mention for always being on time, and in the process ending up doing the majority of PL translations. Thank you Kona!

Last, but not least, our pixel wranglers are fully deserving of some high fives too. From pachi, the photoshop overlord, down to Xeofreestyler, Silversky, alffla, our graphics team really pulled their weight and produced amazing banners, lineups and other assorted pics that broke through our walls of text and made each update actually readable. A special thank you to ZeroCartin who treated us all to his uber cool illustrations in Swarm Season, one of our favourite playoff updates.

So, dear readers, as you look back on this season, and the coverage it received from TL, we hope you will take the time to think about whose writing/translating/graphics you enjoyed the most, and maybe give them a shout out. As for us, we're happy to announce that Riptide/Heyoka will be back in 2009-10 with another year of Proleague, and what we hope will be many great games. It was a privilege having you with us for the tail end of this season, and we look forward to seeing you all in the next. Good night, and good games!

and thank you for the great write up.

You forgot about Khan's other less known players like MIRACLE and Juni though. But they are still pretty good.

HYUK? Why? He may be doing well in recent days, but he has like 0 accomplishments, and he will probably just get stomped by most of the other players.

Awesome writeup.

Really looking forward to the next season, hoping for some new players to rise up and start kicking ass.
Also excited for Fantasy PL, my team will destroy all
<Wolfpox> i remember when MVP beat that one guy, and everyone was like 'whoa' except that penguin dude.

Fantastic writeup! next season seems really promising, Hyuk is gonna take the failzerg tag of off the skt1zerg line I hope. Maybe Perfectman will step up in Oz and I can't wait to see Calm continue his sick runs.
