There are some more logical problems with it.
1) If the wagon still has steam maybe he didn't want to be on a mislynch wagon?
2) I don't think anything was settled at that point in time. Artanis is giving the unvote way to much weight.

1) He started the wagon and wasn't the one pushing it through. It doesn't seem likely that it'd come back to haunt him.
