As some of you probably know, me/Foolish/TheMango played a "champions" game of mafia off-site with a bunch of mafia players from ~15 different sites or so. In any case, mafia won a close victory at 2-1 lylo.
The organiser wants to make another game, this time with some emphasis on weeding out the inactives who dragged the last game down a little. He wants TL Mafia to choose two representatives to play.
There are a couple of things to note:
- they're going to be using 24 hour days for this game - game will start mid-October, around the 14th - probably want players who can perform decently as either alignment
As this game looks to be having 24 hour days, obviously players willing to be active and spend time are going to be quite important.
I can throw up a poll with some arbitrary names for you guys to vote on if you wish, or maybe if you just want to list two players in order, I can manually tally the votes. We'd like both our names sorted by 9th latest.
I think it'd be a lot a simpler to just see first who's interested (and actually has time to play 24 hour days) before voting for people. It seems to me like very few people would actually have time for this (especially among the players who I'd nominate).

This definitely is the best way to go about it, but if I had to choose in a vacuum it'd have to be Chezinu (because he's actually good as either alignment and the Brown Brotherhood must be represented) and I don't know who else. I don't know if I played with Palmar enough to judge him. I would vote Keirathi if he's open to it, but I think he's busy which is why he's stopped playing and I don't know how much he's played scum. I just remember him being good as town.
I got it. Ace has to go. Maybe he'll get a chance to play without everyone unduly fearing him when he's town due to his scum abilities. He's good as both town and scum.
as has already been said, you should get a thread where people are interested before you vote people. Most of the people nominated are either inactive or don't wish to play (kita)
If we're being serious then kita. I dunno who else. If we're not (or hell even if we are) then whatever genius suggested Chezinu and Axle. It's not even that they're bad players, 'cause they're not. It would just be amazing to pit their styles against the 'Champions.'
I can certainly manage to replicate my best town games in an environment of new players (to me at least).
As far as playing mafia, I think that people who are unfamiliar with me and how I play might have difficulty early on with reading me correctly. I'm also a class-1 thread destroyer if I feel like being disruptive.
24 hour days will pose a challenge at times but it's likely I wouldn't be alive too long as either alignment anyway.
Alright, we're gonna be doing it like this instead:
The game starts October 17. The first game day will be 2 days, meaning Thursday and Friday. After that it's the weekend which is also one combined day. After that it's back to regular 24 hour days (with weekends still being one combined day though). So this will allow people to get warmed up and get into the game before the pace picks up a bit.

Ability to play in the champions game is more dependent on time than anything. I know for the first one a few other people were asked, but they couldn't play cause they didn't have the time to. Truth be told the game was delayed starting because I told thingman I wouldn't play unless it started after Labor Day weekend. Honestly I think almost anyone who has been recommended in this thread is qualified to play and since there's going to be a few more of the champion's games there will be other opportunities for those who can't play now. I would really want Ace to play in one of them.

My mafia play in forum mafia has gotten a lot better as of late (of course in my relative time that's like the past two years) and this was the perfect opportunity for me to push that play further, which I felt like I was able to do. Of course I kinda sucked in game at times, but eventually I had marvellosity convinced I was town and fooling him means a lot more than fooling anyone else cause we have played plenty of times.
In retrospect, being able to play for more than a day or two in that game probably speaks more for itself than anything. It's hard to judge just how good someone is based off of that one game. One guy we killed Night 1, soah, plays with us on esports mafia now (he's Keith). After playing with him a few times it's clear that he's really good, however from the champions game you would never know cause he was only alive for 48 hours. With that said, I'm glad I was able to at least accomplish something in that game; I made a name for myself by fake claiming cop, other players aren't so lucky.
Really it would probably take a few games to showcase what I'm generally known for: power stomping the mafia on day 2. That's because it would require me to be town, to not die nights 1 and 2, and to actually be right and catch the mafia, and the occurrence of these three things together is small. Sure, you might remember the games where I stomp mafia, but there are plenty of games where I die very early and there are the games where I don't stomp the mafia cause I was wrong. I am in the top 20 for most number of games played on this forum and a lot of them I played shitty.
There shouldn't be a need to pick the "best" players (whatever that means) among us to go play in those games. Those games would need to be hosted with the same players multiple times before you can determine who is really the best and who isn't; one game is too small of a sample size. I would rather send someone who is excited and is willing to dedicate the time to play his or her best even if that player may not be as good as other players mentioned thus far (remember there were quite a few inactives in the game I played in). The game of champions games should not be taken seriously as proof that players A from mafia group B are better than players X from mafia group C. The competition is for fun. Rather, this should be taken as an opportunity to unite mafia players into a common front; to expand our borders and integrate with the foreign communities if you will.
The real trick is to accurately describe our representative's town metas, but claim it's their scum meta, in this thread and use SEO to direct all searches of their usernames to those posts so they get horribly mislynched.

I'll probably be doing some kind of video log of my play this game to attempt to rationalize my actions in game to the best of my ability, and then post it afterward. I'm treating this as a learning experience mostly, as I think being largely unaware of what to expect from the players in this game should give me quite a few challenges along the way.

Um... There are a bunch of players in like every game recently---Koshi, Rayn, me (though I opted out of Hogwarts) and they've been insanely spammy.
Mafia wins almost every game all the time, though there is hope for strong active and vocal towns without a large lurk component (which is a rarity).

To be fair, I didn't get a PM. Also, being fair, I would have said no. World Champs mafia took too much out of me to immediately hop into a fresh environment.

Yours are actually the only site where more than one person declined an invitation . And I believe it was only one other site where one person declined an invitation. A few of the bios only look weak because their sites don't have yearly awards or anything that testifies to their skill

I can confirm that this happened exactly as Broag says it did. Right down to the brutally pained anus. It was one of the worst cases I've seen since any time that cDgCorazon (may God rest his anus) posted anything.

After the flips it turns out Scum had 3 1 shot vigs,(limited by which night hey could shoot) giving them 2nk 2nk 2nk 1nk 1nk 1nk ..... Town had a vig that could shoot until number of times until population fell below X (forgot what X was)

They had a seer and a back up/apprentice seer. If swingy was the issue an apprentice marksmannot sure I see the issue you do.

It's not that; you seem to have a quality that makes you positively lynchable, whereas calling people stupid is probably a negatively lynchable quality.
You should find out what your positively lynchable quality(ies) is(are) ^_^
edit: e.g. say on average every townie gets lynched 1/5 times calling people stupid reduces this to 0.5/5 times however you get lynched 3/5 times
So it's what takes you from 1 to 3, not your failure to reduce from 1 to 0.5
Anyway, it's a matter of familiarity I think - my style is kinda....lofty I guess. I play as if I know what I'm doing and sometimes people don't like that. I think in that Champions game it was a weird mix of having that playstyle plus the meta reads from players who /should/ be familiar with my play plus my failure to use my claimed power. I find I'm lynched a lot more on MafiaScum when I play there, and I think it's a similar kind of thing.
I'm just gonna keep doing what I do and either get lynched or don't. Like I said in my bio - I find success enough doing what I do to keep doing it.

Thingyman It's me again. It's time for season 2 of the Mafia Championships.
This time it will be just 1 player from each community for the entire season. At least, that's the plan at the moment, but if I can't find enough communities, a big community like TL may end up getting an additional spot, plus having an alternate on standby is always good, so preparing a #2 player is probably still a good idea.
People who participated in season 1's finale are ineligible to play again. So marvellosity and yamato cannot be voted in as the representative.
If you're up for it, here is the info you could post (sorry, I don't know how to use bold in PM's, so the formatting looks bad)
The current plan for season 2:
• 65 different communities will be represented. • 1 player per community for the entire season (preferably). • 5 qualifying games will be played with 13 players each. • 2 players advance to the finale from each game based on post-game votes. • 3 additional players are granted wildcard spots.
Game setup:
The game will have a very basic mafia setup: 3 mafia members, 7 vanilla townies and 1 cop. The cop starts the game with a random vanilla townie peek.
Some communities are not very used to playing basic setups like this, but for the first season, we utilized a setup with a good share of power roles, so this time around we are trying something new. For season 3 we will switch it up again.
Days will last 36 hours and nights 12 hours, meaning 48 hours (2 days) per game day. With one exception: The weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will be one game day. This means the game will last a maximum of 2 weeks.
Timeline:
The first game is set to start April 6th. The other four games will take place in the 1-3 months after that. I will make a Doodle and find out the best times to start the 5 games so that preferably everyone gets to play during a time that suits them well.
In addition to this, it is also a priority to ensure as much as possible that all the players in any given game has no prior history of playing with each other to ensure a level playing field (but I cannot 100 % guarantee that this won’t happen).
Thingyman has asked that the TL Mafia community nominate another representative for their mafia championships. I guess we should figure out who would be interested in playing and then perhaps vote on a consensus. We have until April 1st to decide. Any takers?

In Mafia XV, Chezinu didn't like that his mafia team wasn't communicating with him, so he created a new team on his own and recruited townies, setting up a private forum with various levels of access, and tried to take over the game as a publically-proclaimed member of the ISRC and Brown Empire.
In Mafia XVIII, Chezinu openly claimed detective multiple times but was never shot, yet somehow trusted in the end (only player who can do this). He checked the mafia godfather foolishness and he then claimed to Foolishness. Foolishness thought he could use him and kept him alive to help him defeat the other mafia family. However, Chezinu knew Foolishness was GF anyway, and while proclaiming Foolishness innocent in the threat, tried to engineer his death behind the scenes. Then he harassed Foolishness by sending him inane PM's: the best was one time after they finished an irc conversation, he sent Foolishness a pm entitled "A conversation I had with myself after you left, thought you'd be interested" followed by a long irc argument between Chezinu and himself.
In Merc Mini Mafia, Chezinu roleclaimed "bank" and hinted that he was third party the entire game. Chezinu figured out the entire mafia team by day 3 with no extra help (he only accused/voted for mafia). Chezinu believed he was a 3rd party survivor who's goal was to lynch the mafia, live, and amass as much money as he could, even giving away his imba Serial Killer gun. Unfortunately he read his role pm wrong or created a new one and was actually a Serial Killer that needed to be the last player alive.

Are you interested?
As always, how you decide your representative is completely up to you. To guarantee your community a spot in Season 3 of the Mafia Championship, I will need to know of your community's interest within the next week (until April 4th). Following this, you will have an additional two weeks to decide your nominee (until April 18th). Additionally, it would be a very good idea to also name an alternate.
Remember that your representative needs to be prepared to deal with a lot of activity. Expect at least upwards of 500 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. The representative needs to not only be able to read all this, but should also at least be able to manage making 10+ posts per day phase.
Season 3 Specifics
• 136 different communities are invited to participate. If some decline the invitation, I may opt to allow larger communities an additional nominee. • 8 Qualifying Games will be played with 17 players each. • 2 players advance to the Finale Game from each game based on post-game votes. • 1 Wildcard Game will be played (Wildcards are decided by a jury consisting of former finalists), determining the 17th and final spot in the Finale. Runner-ups in this game will be first in line to replace any finalists who may have to drop out.
Season 3 Timeline & Important Dates
The first Qualifying Game is set to start April 25th. Additional games will take place in the 1-3 months following. I will create a Doodle and find out the best times to start the various games so that preferably everyone gets to play during a time that suits them well.

Season 3 Game Design & Setup
For each season, we’ve changed it up. This time, we’re doing something new again!
The setup is called Matrix12 and is inspired by mafiascum’s popular Matrix6 setup, if any of you are familiar with that. In short, the concept is that there are 12 different possible setups and the host randomizes which one is used. The players know what setups are available, but not which one will be used!
Regarding lynch mechanics: There will be a deadline each day phase, and the person with the most votes at the end of the day is lynched, unless a majority has already been reached before then, in which case the day ends prematurely.
Days will last 36 hours and nights 12 hours, meaning 48 hours (2 days) per game day. With one exception: The weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will be one game day (so day will be 60 hours and night 12 hours on weekends).

I think TLMafia has something unique to offer, something MS doesn't have. 48 hour days and 24 hour nights, for people who want faster days and deadline plurality lynches. Are there other mafia sites who are bigger than us with those mechanics as the standard?

My serious thoughts, I agree with Kush on this - at least from last year, there was quite an interest following our rep (Chezinu) through his games.
Challenge here is to find someone who is active and willing to sink in the time and deal with the BS of how the other reps might play, as was said before if you cannot handle TL, you wouldn't be able to handle an all-star game.

I'd nom any of Damdred/Kita/Artanis/ritoky/Greymist/Shining but honestly I also know all of them are very very busy people. The other people that come to mind for me would be JAT/Koshi/Rels - if based on timezones, an NA player is more optimal/required, I'd say any of Damdred/Kita/ritoky/GM/geript/sandroba.
I think Damdred would be the best player to send as he is one of the best players currently on TL Mafia and probably can play in their time zone pretty well.

That's probably my shortlist FWIW.
Ideally you would want someone who is really good at both alignments. Which leaves you with damdred and kita from that list. Would support both because they would also leave a good impression behaviour wise.

Kind of interesting to play in these in my experience. It's odd how much variance in play style there is from site to site, many things that people that play on TL take for granted as self evident truths are contentious or unfamiliar to people on other sites.
So definitely worth doing for someone that wishes to broaden their mafia experience.

i vote for whoever wants to play it and will try to win. i suggest to whoever goes to be nice first and foremost. not just to represent the site well (but not accurately ;D), but because from what little i cared to read last year some websites and players lynched purely on people being assholes and 0 game thought behind it.

We don't accept previous finalists. Everyone else can play again. We feel that those who've already been to the finale have had their shot at the ultimate glory. With regards to "player quality" dropping because of this, I'm not sure I'd agree on a general level at least. Besides, this season, about half the communities are participating for the first time.

I don't mind you busting my balls , but if I am to give a serious answer: Many people didn't like the series being hosted on 2+2, and for a lot of people the site was even blocked because it was a gambling website (meaning that some reps couldn't play, and they can now). The site spawned as a direct consequence of many people saying that it would be a good idea to create a neutral site for games like this, as that would also help minimize the feeling of "why the hell are we going to this random poker site with crappy functions?".
Oh, and to clarify another point: You will indeed be sending just one representative. One per community.

There is a filter function. Just press "ISO" on any post, and you will get that person's posts. There are many features to make playing a lot easier, including the ability to request votecounts at any time and being able to bookmark posts, etc.
Thingy is innocent. I distinctly remember playing with him on Daily Mafia on the day you guys are saying Champions Mafia turned into Chumpions Mafia. Clearly not Thingy's doing.
There is a very, very strong possibility of there being at least one Euro game amongst the qualifying, which your rep could sign up for, if that makes it an easier decision for anyone considering volunteering.
Have all expressed interest and koshi and Rels were also suggested. I have a ton of time over the next month now that life is normalizing but whatever community wants
the reason I want to go is because I think playing with different players elsewhere will get me out of this laxy funk I am in to some degree.
It would force me to play against players who don't know my meta and where I can't skate by on reputation.

Unfortunately, it's one rep per community, but if anyone ever needs to sub out during these games and an alternate can't be found from that representative's site, the alternates will be pulled from the largest communities' alternates.

I am not talking about this game, i am talking specifically about past games. The post i quoted was from 2013. Nevertheless, people should not insta-lynch (or even vote for) anyone until the EOD in an IML game -- especially in (or close to) LYLO, unless there is mechanically confirmed mafia and even then it's questionable since more time = more accurate reads in most of the cases. Self-voting is even worse. Whoever doesn't understand this doesn't really belong to a champions game.
Idk Rayn we played the game extremely well and forced town into the situation.
Mafia tricked town into doing something non optimal and then we hammered it was the right thing.
Anyway I thought just IMO the game itself was decently high level for a qualifying game. And I would recommend it even if I don't advance it was quite fun if not challenging and relieving for the metaless environment

And my second comment was an answer to HtS' question about why some people here on TL Mafia take trolly approach to these games, or don't really care.
I've always been under the impression that those who played on other sites found the level of play to be startlingly bad compared to TL, though I've never played elsewhere myself so I can't say for sure.
It was one guy who ran out of time and was about to be modkilled for talking about out of game information so he got himself lynched to save a Lynch for town.
I found several people to be under the level of play but I found probably 6-8 that were great just in my game. Though many were wrong because scum team played well.
Also we forced them into situations where we killed the reasonable people and left the people who were going full rayn tunneled XD.

From what I've seen in the champion game, we are better at town and worse as scum as a whole. Maybe that's why I was shocked by the setup actually, if the setup used in the champions game was used here, town would win 99% of the time. It was 5 mislynches for town to lose + jailkeeper + cop with with no cop hate + no-lynch allowed against 2-shot roleblocker + 1-shot strongman. And the strongman was not even a mafia vig, it just makes the mafia NK bypass protection. But apparently it lead to two good games already which both ended up won by scum so I suppose it's balanced for these games.

Possibly, even probably this game you played in Damdred (and other ones of these games) are more enjoyable and fun to play for some people than for example here on TL and i don't want to discourage anyone to play in those games if they want to. There are certainly good players aswell, but i think people need to know what they are signing up for because i don't think the name of the game represents the product.
I just find the whole "format" and how it is "sold" hilarious. People making mistakes and wrong decisions - shooting townies as vigilante or whatever - is one thing, but it's another thing that for example the "jury" who decides who are the best players - or played the best - in a certain game makes a decision that a vigilante who shot three townies (amongst other things) is the best town player and qualified to advance further. That simply cannot be true except for under certain circumstances, which i know was not the case in that specific case since i followed that game. I don't even remember who won that game, but if town won it was definitely not the vigilante's good play that made it happen, if mafia won, he was probably scum MVP in the game lol..
This is not to mock anyone's play, it's to show how the decision making process on who was "good" or not is either completely biased or people making the decision are not actually qualified to make one -- at least if you call the game "Mafia Championship game".
Same goes with inactivity in some games. "Best of the best" people playing mafia and half of the players never catch up on the thread and/or people getting modkilled/replaced because of whatever (non-personal) reasons.
Some people copy-pasting the playerlist and putting "town", "null" or "scum" after each name repeatedly changing those "reads", never explaining why. If that's not enough, then we have people never lynching them because "wow tone is so townie". If even that is not enough, some people even thought the dude was scum MVP because "he managed to fly under radar so damn well!".
So yeah.. That's why i take the trolly / don't care approach.

Actually I think there is one more key difference in scum play thatbi encountered in this game vs here.
We have a tendency to solo play scum and try to get town read screw our partners. While we covered and pushed for each other.
There was barely any busses. I took part in shenanigans d1 that my partner was going down to anyway. Everyone else totally chainsaw, could be higher town here as well.
But idk sometimes really miss the team feeling here.
We hit VCA and associative reads pretty hard here. Often what wins or loses the game for scum here is the town making correct assumptions about what the scum would or wouldn't do. We seem to try and throw odd actions and wifom associations to the town, which is easier with more of a solo mindset.
That being said I didn't follow the game and I don't know how the town did its thing. I completely agree that TL is way too in love with busing.

As you all know, Damdred played in the finale game, which almost just ended, and did well and won

Interest in a hydra event?
At least a dozen different communities this year expressed an interest in a so-called "hydra event", so it's finally gonna happen. If you don't know what "hydra" means, it's when two people share the same account (two heads). So the idea is that each participating community can send one or multiple hydras of two players, the advantage of which is that it's maybe easier to be active when two players are both playing on the same account, and it's also just a lot of fun
So maybe your community would also be interested in this. If so and if you're wanting to play and have a partner, please send me a PM on this site before mid September.
