49 is a lame number. Lets skip it.

49 is an awesome number, let´s make Mafia XLIX the next one!

I´m interested in cohosting if anyone need some help to run a medium-to-small game.

I want to get some practice before I try to run a Resistance game.

dethy is balanced and really really fun. Yes it comes down to 50/50 for scum at endgame but its still winnable and definitely not "ridiculously town favoured"

Since there's people asking in another thread about the next newcomer game, why don't Forumite and I host one? I can start anytime.

In case anyone accuses us of queue-jumping, you're welcome to take up the job...hosting a basic game which a bot could do is work, not fun. In any case, I'll post a comprehensive argument against having a game queue soon enough.

I'm new to TL Mafia.

I've been reading this: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=274334#6

I have decided that Mafia sounds super awesome. I'd like to play. I see that this is currently the queue:
---The Queue---
Queue is on hold until further notice. No new games may join
[N] Ver's Virtuoso Mafia - Due to start after XLVII (Ver is host)
[T] Election mafia - Due to start sometime (kitaman27 is host; Cyber_Cheese is cohost)
[M] Miss Marple Mafia - Due to start after Mini Mafia X (Tackster is host; Deconduo is cohost)

And the upcoming games list is empty. Does this mean that there are no games currently being formed, and I should wait until a queue game becomes an upcoming game? Or is there somewhere else I should go to get started?

Thanks for your help.

What you said is correct. Currently there is a massive 80 player game going on, so we are waiting for people to die off before we put up a new game. Within this week the plan is to put up a newbie game (for players with 3 games experience or less) so that would be the game for you to join, so be on the look out for that. Our activity on the forum hit a trough recently so the queue got a little out of whack (rightfully so as this was the first time since the formation of the queue that this happened).

About the newbie games.

Is there a reason to involve more experienced players in them? Like 2-3 people who know what they're doing in a 12 player game. Instead of the coaching system which seems to me to be not working all that well, we just stick 2 people who know what they're doing (and promise to behave) in the game to raise the overall skill level.

I know they do something similar over on Mafiascum.

Could be dangerous; if there are 2-3 people who have serious analysis skills or a good eye for behavior and the experience to back it up, how they're distributed between scum, town and blue could be the determining factor in the game's outcome. Although this sounds like it would increase the level of play in the game, if you have 2 veterans and they're both scum, the townies are probably boned. Manually splitting them between scum and town is bad, too, since that reveals a lot of information. It might make more sense to have like 6 new players and 6 experienced players, so that regardless of distribution, there will be enough experienced players in a group to have a positive impact, and you can randomize their roles in a more meaningful fashion without unbalancing the game.

That being said, it's possible that having newbies in the game will reduce the quality of the game enough that I think it's best to just roll with it and let the newbies get a chance to acquaint themselves with the format and mechanics of mafia, and have experienced players help rather than participate.

In my experience the coaching in newbie games is fine for anyone that gives a shit :-D I'd think including vets would just result in most of the newbies being afraid to contribute much, especially if it is any of the more aggressive vets. I'm sure it would raise the skill level of the game some, but I don't know how important that really is when the main point is to learn the basics and get some experience in doing/debating analysis of other players. I'd also worry about people just using the vets as a crutch and letting them do all the analysis rather than doing the thinking themselves.

at mafiascum they have an ic and 2 SEs

an ic is an experienced player who is designed to help out all the noobs, answer questions and generally teach. SEs are players with moderate experience who are there to play the game and make sure it's not newbs derping about for the whole game. I agree with palmar that 2 experienced players should be in all newbie games.

Coaches are nowhere near as useful as people seem to think they are.

tbh I think it's best we don't actually have newbie games, and just have regular minis.

When only 20-30% of the playerbase doesn't know what's going on they can follow the vets who lead by example and learn through experience. When 100% of the playerbase doesn't know what's going on even coaching won't help.

Personally I think newbie games tend to be hugely scum favored simply because new townies become bored easily and they start out at such a huge information disadvantage that they can't learn the game and find scum at the same time.

In addition, all their playstyles will be similar (like timid, mostly) and so they won't learn much because there is usually a distinct lack of variety of playstyles in newbie games.

That's just my opinion though. I'm sure new players would like to play with other new players and the tradition of hosting newbie games won't end any time soon, but I think it's better if new players just go play with everyone else instead of creating a segregated sandbox in which we baby them.

That sounds entirely reasonable. I actually think I'd enjoy jumping into the deep end to begin with. It looks fun. A playerbase largely composed of vets is ideal-- moreso than the "half of the players are vets" idea I had.

join the next open mini!

They're my favorite kind of game. Generally pretty short, little bs (thanks to the amount of players) and there's usually less balance concerns because of the lack of modkills.

People have to play too, you don't generally run into as many lurkers or useless people as you do in larger games with 30 or so people.

Okay, Zona is going to be putting up the newbie (or semi-newbie) game this weekend. Given what people are saying here I want to incorporate a few experienced players into the mix as well (ultimately Zona will get the final the say. First and foremost this is a newbie game). Once that starts kitaman will host his themed game. Depending on the flow we may have a small standard mini game somewhere in there. Queue will reopen sometime soon (still haven't decided, though I am thinking this weekend).

Sounds good, I wouldn't mind playing with some vets like I did for my first game too (My last game was Surprisingly Normal Mini Mafia II, and people like Palmar were in there.)

I'd be keen to try a game. Have a little more time now given it's the end of the year. My only concern is that time-zone difference. Depending on when the voting occurs I may be :z I know that the day takes place over a 24hr period so I can certainly participate. It just means my last post may be many hours before the close of voting.

Thoughts?
