It must have been changed then. I remember when I got Gold (first try but clamping was in full effect at the time) I shot straight to Gold III then Gold I, I was playing against Gold II-III players the first time, and Gold I-II players the second one. By the time I hit Plat (against first series) I was playing against Plat III people because of the clamping, and doing decently. I didn't play much after this and went on a loss streak on a tilting evening, but without that I think I'd have went straight to Plat III too on account of Elo.
That happened in s3 and s4 on my main and smurf, I didn't skip divisions in s5 but I didn't really have win streaks until I made the run for Plat on my main, and my smurf was used because a friend wanted a duoQ partner (and I wouldn't play the Gold III account with a Silver II, bad for her games) so it didn't really gain much. Maybe it was changed to be harder in s5 since they had removed clamping?

Best runes/masteries setup for pre-season Darius top? I have 2 options, dunno which is better.
18/0/12 with Sorcery/DES/Vampirism/Oppresor/Battering/DFT + Unyielding/ToughSkin//Veteran's/Insight or 18/12/0 with Savagery/SStash/Merciless/DGame.

For Darius, I think 12-0-18 is the best, running down undying grasp. You already do enough damage and a fighter who doesn't die that does enough damage, that's scary imo and he has the ability to get people to him to best optimize on undying grasp.

You need a lot of undying grasp procs to make it worth losing the hp from strength of ages though, and considering darius' normal fighting style of only really actually hitting people for 3-4 seconds max, it doesn't seem like something you'll be getting many off.
Like most fights seem to be either you're kited to death, or you get onto them and kill them. Any truly extended trades which last more then 4-5 seconds you're winning anyway because of your passive, so it seems frivolous to optimise masteries for the fringe case where you're already winning.

Undying Grasp is pretty darn strong in lane if you frequently trade, though, while Strength of Ages does nothing because you haven't stacked it yet (30 cannon minions is also a pretty long time, it stacks much faster on a jungler—which I actually like, gives them some kind of "compensation" for having less farm, without being the usual "cheap stuff so laners actually use it too"). I'd say it depends whether you want to strengthen your laning or later teamfight tanking?

I'd say I want to strenghten laning phase instead of teamfighting tanking atm. So, do we want to always go for 12-0-18?

You guys are missing the glory that is 0/18/12 Darius. Bops some squish and then zoom zoom with Raider's to your next target.
Make em bleed Guillotine Repeat

problem is you wont get out of lane with that as the cunning tree is absolutely atrocious. That was my initial thought as it sounds perfect for nasus but cunning tree is a joke. Switched to 12-0-18 and never looked back.

If you don't need Mana Regen then 12 cunning doesn't really give you much in terms of laning stats.
Yeah precision is OP and cunning keystones can be super good, but Darius has big true damage so he doesn't get full benefit from pen anyway. True damage doesn't get increased by % bonus damage, so Merciless is also kind of crap on Darius and especially crap for laning.
Basically, tier 1-2 cunning is bad in general, and tier 3-4 cunning is bad on Darius.
Definitely think 12/0/18 is the way to go.
If you do need mana Regen then precision + meditation basically justifies the entire cunning tree.

everyone takes merciless over meditation from what i saw even on mana hungry champions

A lot of people are bad at masteries, as it turns out.

Cunning tree is really good but not for champs like darius. Say nami is so fucking good now with 0/18/12. The mreg+precision+thunderlord is pretty much perfect for you.

I guess I should have /s'd the post.

I agree grasp is good for laning on champions that have extended trades, but is darius really one of those?
I don't see you ever getting more then one proc off in a "trade" unless you're all inning, and people won't let you take repeated extended trades in the majority of matchups anyway. Even at 1k health it's still only 30 magic damage (which goes down to like 10-12 after resists,) and if you're trading once every wave or so you're basically having the same amount of health grasp would have healed you, permanently added to your health pool by strength of ages.
Grasp is cool and all, but in reality it's a really tiny amount of healing/damage early on unless you can proc it multiple times in a fight.

You just get it in tank v tank so you can sustain while you farm bandit. It is the new agreement of all the gentlemen of the top lane.
|
Grasp has the advantage of being useful for laning while simultaneously being strongest at 6 items.
Since strength of ages is strongest at like 25 minutes, I think with shorter games a lot of champions who can make an argument for both might lean towards strength of ages right now.

This reminds me of that thing scarra said about runes and masteries :p
"Runes are for your lane phase, masteries for the midgame"
|
I dunno, but I don't run scaling cdr blues for the laning phase.

"Runes are for your lane phase, masteries for the midgame" they exist to make the laning phase and jungling ability of certain characters better.
late game it matters much less which runes and masteries you took.

Thanks guys for all the tips. I admit, I have no idea about new masteries.
