i dont even understand why this is even an issue.
how fucking hard is it to not call people names. grow up. No one ever gets banned or chat restricted or w/e (in 99% of cases) for occasionally losing their cool and swearing. People get in trouble for repeated, awful behavior.
plus the logic of "they do it so I should be able to do it too!" is also incredibly juvenile.

Yeah, but not only is that just being an asshole and not trash talk in the first place, why would you even bother?
Of course you get banned for that, everyone knows that.
But if you type "LOL nice flash" "best riven NA" to your lane opponent when they fail flash, no one would care. That's trash talk. Telling then they screwed up is trash talk.

Yeah, and he got suspended for it. That's my point. You trash talk your own team beyond playful jeers and you get banned. That's the biggest reason people get banned in LoL for sure.

Trash Talk: noun insulting or boastful speech intended to demoralize, intimidate, or humiliate someone, especially an opponent in an athletic contest
This is from googling "define: trash talk", you are using your own definition to argue a point.
why would you even bother? Because there are situations where a player could genuinely believe that calling his opponent a faggot will help him win the game. I would argue that to a lot of players, ranked is all about winning the game so this type of behavior might seem acceptable to some. I am not advocating calling your opponents faggots. However, I could see this situation arise with phrases that aren't nearly as demeaning and still get reported. IE. I call my opponent fucking trash, there is a line obviously but to say that there is no reason to insult people is simply wrong, in my opinion.

I never said there was no reason to insult people, or that you shouldn't do it. I merely said if you do so with a little tact no one cares.

And if you deem that saying it with tact won't get the message across?

You know all of these problems could be solved by just not being a jerk. Just sayin. No ones ever been banned for being too nice.

I am not against this change because I think that I will now get banned. I am against this change because I think it might lead to Riot promoting behavior on the opposite side of the spectrum (there are people that report too much and use reports to shield their own bad behavior) which we do not want as a community.
I personally think this change will do almost nothing. I can't imagine there are that many people between chat ban and fully banned that this will actually effect playing that much. Its all about Riot seemingly wanting more reports which might make reporting "right" in the minds of people that we, as a community, don't want to think that.
Edit: To be fair, I don't actually care about this change very much. I don't think it will have an affect either way but a lot of you are acting like there isn't another argument which I believe there definitely is.

We really should all have seen this punish first ask questions never approach sooner.

Not surprised riot is going all in on the punish bad behavior rather than reward good behavior. they talk so much abut "reform" and rehabilitating, they even are calling the new draft mode requirement a Prisoners island type thing. its a definite superiority thing. Its proven that rewards change people more than punishments. but i guess they aren't going to make as much money off of rewarding people rather than punishing them.
though this is going to be abuse to troll the hell out of streaming i can guarantee it. an automated system based on reports that locks you out of ranked? its stream trolls dreams.

They should put in some sort of system in which, if people erroneously report others the system no longer values that reports as highly as someone who only rarely does so and on actually scum people.

Not true at all. I saw a case where a guy got banned for constantly unjustly reporting people and saying that he was going to report people when they'd done nothing wrong.

As I recall, the fact that he'd falsely reported so many people was a contributing factor to why he got banned instead of just chat restricted. Somebody talking normally or not talking is not a legitimate reason to report them, and that argument wouldn't stand up anywhere.

Ah, so it was manually reviewed because he got caught bragging and threatening reports.
Also not being able to edit rune pages in champ select is so maddening. lol i have 1 rune page with only quints filled in, and i dont remember to finish it except while waiting the 7 years it takes to get through champ select.

I go bot lane as ADC with a support I do not know. The lane starts to go badly but we still have a change of pulling it back. They 4 man gank us and we lose tower and dragon.
My support immediately says "welp this game is over, ff at 20". I tell him to "shut the fuck up and play". He says "whatever dude, I don't give a shit about this game". I tell him "if you don't care about winning then why the fuck are you playing ranked". "Whatever dude reported, verbal harassment".
Now he may not follow through with the report but in this situation he using the perceived power of a report to excuse his own bad mentality. I do not want this attitude to become more acceptable because some people perceive that Riot is supporting reporting so therefore they can report for whatever reason and its "good".

I don't understand in what way Riot's perpetuating that reporting for any reason is a good thing.
