I mean sending a clear message the prejudice behind the words isn't sactioned is good in theory, but I would say almost everyone knows its wrong to be racist or to be homophobic except the people who are racist and homophobic themselves.

seems pretty clear to me that ignorance and paranoia and people finding things to blame (dey tuk our jerbs) are the problem and the large majority of people are good people and going around "white knighting" them for using words is pointless

while it is true that faggot has evolved to be a generic insult, the reason why it is chosen as such still is a result of the very strong antigay sentiment in society. insults are chosen for their degree of hate calories and specificity or accuracy isnt that important to the dude cursing u out. so even the history of the word would stil be a priblem. but yea hiding the issue is no good either, as it reflect a period in which there was strong general antigay prejudice. anyway end of tangent. for the stuff about consequence vs intent tm scanlon has some stuff on it

if you were to ask me I would say the words "faggot" and "cunt" have a strong bite to them vocally, and I imagine thats the reason they are so popular and "offensive" regardless of meaning
in fact the whole origin of swear words has nothing to do with meaning they are just words that sound nasty and are satisfying to release emotions

point is not that homophobes are exclusive in converting this word into generic insult, but on the evolution of generic insults with specific references. distasteful females, physically infirm or deviant, religiously unclean etc. the degree of hate is what matters or useful to a hurler of insults

well the thing about insults is it has to be insulting originally
aside from "you're stupid" or "you're weak" or "you're a nerd" you're going to have trouble finding any insults that can't be seen as offensive so SOME group of people (even nerd is probably offensive to people who were bullied at school)

i mean the degree of hate is intrinsic to your anger at the person now it doesn't have to have anything to do with degree of hate toward the group of people your insult refers to

Should be able to turn range indicators on in the options menu, if that's what you mean?
