Sounds like something fucked up his Visa, because this is highly irregular (for a European anyways). If this were a Chinese or somesuch visa, I would understand.

He had documentation to come to the US legally through a visa waiver, but was still denied access to an extent and for reasons still unknown. Dexter is not an employee or contracted to CLG in any way. He has not been paid by the company or any of its employees, partners, or affiliates. We assume he was turned away due to the assumption he was attempting to enter the US and obtain work illegally, so this ruling greatly disappoints us if it is in fact true. Dexter is still trying out, but it is almost certain he will not be able to return to the US until he is an official employee and his athlete visa is approved. Visa's don't just stop working. Either the customs people he saw really REALLY screwed up, or CLG isn't telling the whole story. USA's customs people are pretty famous for being complete assholes, but they don't just refuse people who have the correct paperwork.

If he had already joined the team officially, he would be an employee already and probably wouldn't have problems with the homeland security? His problem, from my understanding, is that he came into the US on a waiver (but not a Visa proper). I'm not sure what the waiver was for, so I can't say why it would be cancelled. Had he been officially part of CLG and considered an employee, he'd have a visa. Given he wasn't, and his waiver may be tied to employment (I can't say without details). Reviewing the waiver program, it's for stays of 90 days or less, with a list of additional rules and regulations. Included among this waiver is the need for a round trip ticket (if he's staying for LCS, he probably didn't book one home), and employment is explicitly listed as one of the purposes the waiver cannot be used for. Just a cursory glance pulls up these two potential errors. http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html Basically CLG (and Dexter) done fucked up, and this is your typical 1st world response (Europe is the same). A Visa waiver doesn't cover what they thought it would (his tryout phase or somesuch).

They don't even check my baggage when I was carrying ridiculous amounts of tea leaves in pretty sketchy grocery bags (my family meant well, but I was afraid it was going to look like I was smuggling marijuana or something). Now, getting that documentation ranges from an inconvenience (other developed countries) to a nightmare of absurd proportions ("underdeveloped" countries), but you get the point. I'm guessing CLG normally uses visa waivers (which should be fine if the players are simply there to attend a weekend tourney or somesuch at an IEM convention or Dreamhack or MLG, etc), but they probably (erroneously) thought it would work for Dexter too. Seems just like some lazy work.
