Riot's actually really clever with their champion names. Most of the names are also names of companies or people. So if you're doing a Persian vs Greek report you might come across Darius. Or ahri might lead you from ahrinet to ahri the league champion. It might just be coincidence though. Riot has great champion names, but awful champion titles. It's an interesting phenomenon, because it's arguably the reverse with DotA, leading to the fact that the majority of LoL champions are referred to by name, while the majority of DotA heroes are referred to by their title or by an abbreviation of it. EDIT: Actually, I can't think of any League champion that's referred to by title.
Dota titles I think stem from the fact that Dota names are based on Lore(or were in any case), and are rather tedious both to learn and pronounce, but the titles fit their kits and roles, and with exceptions, are more apt as a descriptor. Also helps that often times, the title is a single word.
League has a problem where every single title is like 2-5 words, not including "the" due to their love of adjectives and elaborate titles. When probably 95% of the champs are referred to by name, it's pretty hard to call the other 5% by title. There's khazix-voidreaver, Alistar - Minotaur, Anivia- cryophoenix, and a few others that I'm too lazy to go find. Also comes from the fact that League generally has easier/more standard names to pronounce than like mctauren bighoofalot.
I guess the closest thing would be stuff like cow/bird, but even that is more colloquial.

I'm totally lost, what existing champion sounds like Zac? Best I can come up with is Jax and that's barely similar...

The easiest test is the passive ability icons one, since half of them are just the champion's face

+ Show Spoiler +I missed fiddlesticks. Fuck that guy. And yeah, looking through it, if you were to call them by title like dota, Berserker, Deathsinger, Judicator, Gem Knight, Bounty Hunter, Blood Hunter, Voidwalker, Deciever and Demon Jester are the only ones I'd vote in. Rest of the titles kinda suck.

I had a problem with the headsmans pride, for some reason I was sure that was Hecarim... also Jarvan IV could it not accept Jarvan, Jarvan 4th, almost ran out of time because of that one zz

Khazix can actually have diagonal spikes go through the ranged creeps if he oneshots them, so he can accurately harrass with W even from behind the ranged minions. That's why i believe he beats just about all melees.

in dota you would always see the title with the name when you selected your hero so it was really up to people to just choose whatever was easier. in dota2 it kinda carries over but more or less you see people call them by what the game gives them with a few exceptions

The mainland Chinese client has champion names mostly translated by their names. Taiwanese client mostly uses phonetic spelling of the characters' English names. I was rather amused when I first noticed it a year or so ago.

Yes, but that's for different reasons.
Traditionally, foreign terms were not transliterated/transcribed into Chinese; instead new words would be "invented" for it. Nowadays most people are more willing to do it, but it's still awkward/difficult/inconsistent to transcribe, so it's easier to take the champion's title which can be easily translated.

So that's why champs are called by their literal description.
