I think single elim makes it a lot more exciting. If this was double elim the grand finals would have a team up an entire bo3 which really kills a lot of the excitement for a grand finals imo.

I am a big supporter of single elimination tournament structure for eSports.

It simply provides the best possible competition for the viewers while simultaneously increasing the tension and pressure on the teams.

Double elim just turn tournaments into marathons (it becomes a test of who can last longer)

The only thing i do not like is that the group stage is Bo1, it really should be Bo2. However, I am pretty sure this is because of time restraints.

Yeah, there's a reason why professional sports tend to shy away from double elimination tournaments. If you lose in the quarter or semi finals you weren't the best team at the tournament. Period.

That's pretty much only a product of most Western LAN events being 1-2 day affairs so they have to squeeze in an insane number of games into a short period of time. Realistically in league structures like OGN or various Chinese tournaments that play 1 match a night over an extended period of time, double elim is hardly a test of "who can last longer".

Given that Riot is drawing this out over two weekends, they have plenty of time to make sure the teams are rested before their matches.

But that's because those events often only pay prize money for top 3 spots (and in professional sports, the money is primarily earned through sponsorships rather than prize money anyway)--so if you aren't top 3 it makes zero difference where you placed. Riot is paying vastly different amounts of prize money for EVERY spot of the tournament. So even if you wouldn't have been the best team, there's an extraordinary difference in the prize you earn for being 4th or 8th.

If Riot paid out the same prize money for spots 4-12, and only differentiated 1st/2nd/3rd, I would think single elim was much more appropriate.

The lack of Dignitas fanboyism in this post is disappointing, but otherwise a nice writeup.

I'm still hoping dignitas surprises everyone with a new innovative strategy and wins it :3 fantastic write-up as always though.

I'm hoping there's going to be a lot of speshul taktiks thrown around since a lot of the top teams were practicing their stuff in secret. At the very least I'm just hoping for many exciting series!

Sort of off-topic, but Neo, is there a way to find out how much new user traffic these posts (or LAN LR threads) generate?
I would think that the quality of this stuff draws more and more people to the Subforum, but then again I'm not sure how many really new posters we've seen in the last little while. Maybe just more lurkers?

That would be admin level access, which I don't have. Not too bothered to look into it either.
Sorry.

Appreciate the hard work put into the write up! Really a great way for the more casual fans (like myself) to get hyped and to know what to expect.

OGN was single elim and bo1 group stage as well, it adds to the tension you lose you go home, every bo3/bo5 counts. OGN had a secondary tournament running in the background for the regionals sake...GSL has been single elim forever as well.

TBH double elim to me has always felt greety from the side of tournament organisers to get in more show time to show everyone.
