I know I'm late to the party, but does anyone else here know games which are:
a) Competetive b) Not SC2 c) Not as frustrating as LoL d) Based on decision making more than execution (aka not Quake Live)
Seriously every single time I'm frustrated with LoL because of the whole "You're reliant on random dudes in solo Q" and try to find something different I feel stuck cause it doesn't seems as if there's much else out there. =(
5men premade is kinda what's keeping me with LoL.
Chess.
Bridge (card game) is better than chess. And it has the team aspect.
Bridge is so fucking good. I hate that my whole generation still just thinks it's that game that little old ladies play on TV and in the Movies .
but i thought little old ladies = your generation.

quiet you whippersnapper!
fine, your generation then. Anyone under the age of like, 40, just thinks bridge is a game for little old ladies. when it's actually pretty much the pinnacle of trick-based card games.

Adding some of my personal favorites poker and Go to the pile.
Hard to find interesting competition for poker without spending money though (and it's difficult to spend money on online poker in America atm).
I already make my money by playing poker. =P
Go is awesome though.
Dno, I loved BW so much. Kinda feel like no "modern" game can keep up with it. /bitter vet mode off.
PS: Chess and Go are games with full information though, so they're not as cool as let's say LoL/Poker/Starcraft.
Gizmo, I have fuck no clue about Bridge. I know that it's a game with cards. That's it. Where do I start? =P
Edit: I actually think I'll look into Mahjong, too. Wanted to do that ever since that Anime erh... Akagi.
TL never disappoints. Cheers guys. <3
Bridge is boss. It's a trick taking game, but the bidding mechanic (to determine trump suit) is also a mechanic by which limited information is determined about your partner and your opponents' hands. What's interesting is that the bidding phase is the more complicated part of the game - to learn AND to execute, and that's where much of the strategy for the game comes in. However, there is still a fair bit of strategy to be had during the trick-taking phase (ruffing and finessing, for example.

My girlfriend's parents taught me how to play Bridge. Her father went trollface.jpg for basically the first 10 times we were playing. Shit's been hilarious. Bride kicks some serious ass.

I know someone my age at uni who plays (played? haven't seen him in a while) Bridge in championships. Not sure how big, but he's pretty damn good I hear. He's also a good chess player. Actually I also know a bunch of Chess and Go players at uni, and the numbers keep growing. Pretty fun when they play 3 minute chess matches at uni and people gather and watch...

Street Fighter 4 series
Essentially every new fighting game nowadays is ez-mode execution. Of course there's always the initial execution gap, but every good competitive game *should* have that.

Not "anyone". Bridge is awesome.
It's kinda sad to see so many great card games dissappearing to poker. Pinochle, Gin Rummy, and my favourite Canasta. (Not knocking poker, really, just there are alot of other really good card games out there too).

Anyways, yeah, last year when my friends were sitting around after school waiting until 6 PM for ARML (math) practice, they would play bridge. So cool kids man~

Canasta is kickass. I just got a new deck of Canasta Caliente' cards from teh Target. Good times. Played with my family after Thanksgiving dinner.
Poker isn't any fun unless you gamble and its hard to gamble with friends and money and not hurt feelings.

that was me and my friends 35 years ago!
anyway, bridge rapes, I dunno if there are good online resources. I learned from my dad. Bridge for Dummies was actually surprisingly good as a resource when I tried to teach new people how to play.
i've heard a lot of good things about bridge. We tend not to categorize people in older generations the same way we do our own but it's also a total nerd game from before the modern nerd gaming era, so that's a bonus, who here doesn't like meeting older and wiser nerd ballers?
