I don't think I agree with this. The initial hearthstone beta was extremely small and closed and the viewership was still insane. I think it's more about what the poster above brought up , in that Hearthstone really capitalized on a market that hadn't really been fleshed out yet and offered a new, refreshing online CCG in the blizzard universe with a good UI. It was also a remarkable change of pace from blizzards other flagship titles/genres which created a lot of buzz. I mean ignoring HOTS or HS, most games in exclusive alphas/betas seem to enjoy increased viewership because the only way to access the game is through watching streams. I'm not 100% sure why HOTS has fallen so drastically in terms of twitch viewers, I think it's a combination of the 'moba' market already being tremendously well established between dota and lol, and the game itself not being very entertaining or interesting to watch. I can't comment on the play aspect as I haven't played it myself. Last thought, I think D3:RoS stole a shitload of the HOTS thunder as well. Both games cater to a more login and have fun, 'casual' market and D3:RoS has really taken that role on really well.
It's definitely more fun to play than to watch. With the focus on teamplay so much, and the corresponding decrease in the emphasis on personal skill, there's just less reason to watch. I'm not going to see EPIC PLAYS™ that I can't come close to doing myself, so why not just play instead of watch? It's so much less stressful too, so it's not like I'll watch because I don't feel up to playing, I'll just queue up. I actually think there's more people playing on the alpha now than a few weeks ago, but I'm not surprised it's a less popular spectator game.

I feel this game lacks components of progression. It removes the smaller nuances like last-hitting and denying, etc. But without gold or even the need to stay in lane for experience; there is no individual progression or reward for risk or personal achievement. It makes things rather dry whereas you can push or gank and that's really it. I guess it depends on the scenario.
Another thing that is difficult is knowing what your opponent has. To help diversify each hero, Blizzard made it that you can build them different as they level up; the issue is that there is almost no indicator to know what sort of "spec" someone is going and thus the lack of information dwindles everything down to brute force or tactical ganking.
If anyone wants to play: TorteDeLini #1170
I still enjoy it heavily; I just have to learn to turn myself off! Overall, strong alpha; some arching disagreements, but I'm really glad I got to try it and will keep testing!

I will fully admit that cause it's kinda not possible anymore. Heroes is in alpha and access is tied to accounts, there are no keys. The way Hearthstone was handled is gonna make Blizz change a lot of things.

The fastest way to see if you got in is to check your Battle.net Desktop Agent. If Heroes of the Storm is one of the games in your list, it's available for you to play. Emails went out also, but make sure you check your spam folder (or Promotions tab in Gmail).

I didnt get an email so you might not be notified. Loading up the client is the best way to know for sure.
Also, get on the free TL TS server if you want to play! Its way more fun with voice chat and its free for TL members.
I got to play with Kochi AKA Punch Monster a dude who streams and with the 5 man stack it was a much more enjoiyable game. We didnt all voice chat but the fact we could make a balanced team comp was the best thing about it.
The worst thing from solo matching for me isn't the team mates or the lack of communication, its the awkward team compositions you end up with which can really make it harder to do well than it should.
EDIT: Scratch that, JUST got the email
