I normally refer to them as "tiger-striped cats" being as that they have stripes in similar fasion as a tiger, although not the classic orange w/ black stripes etc.. That's always been my favorite kind for some reason.. but there are definately a ton of different varieties (through massive amounts of different breeds reproducing etc) There are lots of different cats that still look cute and grow up to be nice looking cats, thats not a standard breed - a friend of mine has 2, 1 thats like a short-hair but w/ weird patterns, like a cow - and another thats semi-short-hair but still kinda fluffy.. I think the best bet is to get them from a pound or animal shelter. After all, u would be saving it's life. I adopted a cat from one of those. It's heartbreaking seeing how many of them are locked up. They definately know that there's a possibility for them being saved when u're looking at them - and they plead for ur attention! gL w/ ur selection. Cats FTW

please please PLEASE go to an animal shelter and get a pet there, pets at pet shops are guaranteed survival and pets at shelters only have a certain amount of time before they're put down. cats don't fuckin' deserve that fate, please for the love of god just go to a shelter and pick one out

Basically they have an animal behaviorist look at the extreme cases, like the really messed up ones like really violent, really terrified, and/or really protective, and are usually put into training programs. Most of the animals put into shelters are not that messed up, they might be incompatible with some families because they aren't good with other pets, little children, or whatever, but you know that ahead of time, like there's an adoption counselor that works out everything for you to make sure that the pet doesn't end up back into their shelter or worse. Most of the sheltered animals (at least where I worked) have spent time in a home environment with one of the shelter's employees and have been observed. The main reason the animals act all messed up (you can tell after working with them after a while) is because they lack consistency in their lives; I am sure we would act all fucked up too (if not more so) if we don't have some kind of basic routine down.

Also keep in mind that if both of you work, it may be easier to get a pair, so they have some company and entertainment while you are away. Makes them happier and its less likely you will come back one day to a devastated house with everything scratched up, knocked down and maybe peed on.

Why? If a cat grows by himself, or with little human contact, then when he grows up he will be a loner, and avoid humans. If you are unnable to have someone take care of the kitten, then adopt a grown cat that has been taken care of by a family or something like that. He'll probably take a few weeks to get used to the new house and its members, but then he'll be all friendly and purring (??) against your lap

I also need to add a mandatory brag about my cat. It's so smart, it can do what my wife can't. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=54448

One of our charities (RSPCA) did that, the word got out and they were overtaken by others promising they never would. Other charities, such as the Dogs Trust (whose slogan is 'we never destroy a healthy dog' ), ended up taking all the donations. Charities still obey the laws of the market and over here at least it's not cost effective to put down healthy animals.

My mom used to work voluntary at a cat shelter when she was looking for a permanent job, and as kwark also said, they dont put down cats here either, they are not allowed to and if someone did, it would really make alot of ppl mad. And the shelters get so many requests during the end of the summer, because alot of stupid families buys a kitten in the spring, but they are only kittens for a short time, and when the summer ends they dont want it anymore. So many stories about cats ending up in a bag in the trash can and cats dumped at scrapyards, makes me sad to think about all the nasty things we human does to defenseless and innocent animals.

Tabby's make for great companions. I've had two Tabby cats and they're very affectionate and in some cases behave a lot like a dog. My cat smacks me around in the morning at around 6-7AM for his food though when I was house sitting for my parents. It's annoying -_-

Make sure you know what kind of personality of cat your wife likes as well and get to know the cat before you take into your care. Personality will be more important than looks as time goes on and the initial cute factor wears off.

cats are just awesome though.. inform the thread when OP made a selection.. my parents spent about 900$ on a pair of cats from this breeder.. When one of my original and family-raised cats disappeared my moms was rather upset about it and eventually wanted to get another cat.. they kinda researched 'em and found out that she wanted a type called 'ragdolls' because they're specially breed to be big cats, like Garfield.. and kinda lazy.. just laying around the house etc and whenever u pick 'em up, they're supposed to be limp and easy-going etc.. so ya - they got those cats.. and I was totally livid w/ the idea.. 900$!? for some cats?! u know how many cats u coulda saved from a shelter for that much >< There was no way they coulda justified the decision to me.. was / is rediculous to pay that much for some animal, domestic anyway.

I fully support adopting pets through animal shelter, but I wouldn't say that is an accurate comparison since the rate of the children being abandoned due to their psychological problem is scarcly low compared to the animals being abandoned due to their behavioural issues. Sure there are some children in orphanage that have remaining family, sometimes even a parent, surrendered to the Orphanage due to difficult circumstances dictating that they can no longer be cared for at home, but rarely on the basis of their psychological problems. I wouldn't say the same about the pets in animal shelter in terms of ratio.
