Get a street cat from an animal shelter that looks like that. Breed is irrelevant.

Yeah, it's always better to adopt then to buy from a pet store. If you must have that breed exactly then try to find a personal breeder who will have that specific kind.

Humane Society will have a ton of cats, most of them really sweet. Adopted pets from shelters turn out to be more loyal in my families experiences... any pet I get from now on will be from one of these places trying to save them.

I'm also a supporter of getting a cat from a shelter or the humane society. You should go there and just be around the cats. Wait for the cat to choose you, not the other way around.

I found a kitten like that underneath a car one day in highschool. People on my facebook try to give cats away pretty frequently, buying one is not the way to go~ Be a hero, rescue a cat.

Wait. People buy cats?

Why dont you save yourself the money and go adopt a cat and your local shelter or something? That is what I would do imo.

Adopt one from the animal shelter. All the pets at the animal shelter are vaccinated and have no psychological problems.

I think the kind you're going for is the "american short-hair" or "domestic short-hair", I think they're also called "tabbys"..
I normally refer to them as "tiger-striped cats" being as that they have stripes in similar fasion as a tiger, although not the classic orange w/ black stripes etc..

That's always been my favorite kind for some reason.. but there are definately a ton of different varieties (through massive amounts of different breeds reproducing etc)
There are lots of different cats that still look cute and grow up to be nice looking cats, thats not a standard breed - a friend of mine has 2, 1 thats like a short-hair but w/ weird patterns, like a cow - and another thats semi-short-hair but still kinda fluffy..

I think the best bet is to get them from a pound or animal shelter. After all, u would be saving it's life. I adopted a cat from one of those. It's heartbreaking seeing how many of them are locked up. They definately know that there's a possibility for them being saved when u're looking at them - and they plead for ur attention!

gL w/ ur selection.

No, I volunteered at a local shelter during college and it's not how it works out.

Basically they have an animal behaviorist look at the extreme cases, like the really messed up ones like really violent, really terrified, and/or really protective, and are usually put into training programs.

Most of the animals put into shelters are not that messed up, they might be incompatible with some families because they aren't good with other pets, little children, or whatever, but you know that ahead of time, like there's an adoption counselor that works out everything for you to make sure that the pet doesn't end up back into their shelter or worse. Most of the sheltered animals (at least where I worked) have spent time in a home environment with one of the shelter's employees and have been observed.

The main reason the animals act all messed up (you can tell after working with them after a while) is because they lack consistency in their lives; I am sure we would act all fucked up too (if not more so) if we don't have some kind of basic routine down.
Get it by your hands...

Another option is getting a cat from an adoption agency. Generally, these cats aren't in danger of dying asap, but these groups also can't accept new cats until they get others out of the system. (I volunteer with an adoption agency and we have to turn down so many cats because we just don't have enough space for them. Most of those we turn down probably wind up at the pound.) They are also less likely to get sick (in general) right after you adopt them.

It is easy to get a tabby kitten through a shelter - they are the most common cat breed in North America. When I got mine they had an entire litter of them, all yellow. I couldn't choose from them, so I just played with them & one of them sort of chose me...

Also keep in mind that if both of you work, it may be easier to get a pair, so they have some company and entertainment while you are away. Makes them happier and its less likely you will come back one day to a devastated house with everything scratched up, knocked down and maybe peed on.

My tip is to only adopt a kitten if you have a lot of time to spend with him. It doesn't have to be you the one who stays with him, but a human that gives him warmth and affection.

Why? If a cat grows by himself, or with little human contact, then when he grows up he will be a loner, and avoid humans.

If you are unnable to have someone take care of the kitten, then adopt a grown cat that has been taken care of by a family or something like that. He'll probably take a few weeks to get used to the new house and its members, but then he'll be all friendly and purring (??) against your lap

Dont buy a cat!!!! its a crime!! are tons of orphan cats that need a home!! the cats are not like dogs, they dont have so many differences between races, the better choice its a cute, nice street cat survivor!!!!

Hahahaha!

Can't help you with cat breeds, but where I stay, the shelters have lots more choice than the pet shops, so you might be better off just going to a shelter and matching it up with a photo.

I also need to add a mandatory brag about my cat. It's so smart, it can do what my wife can't.

What my cat looks like =D

Well, less pointy ears.

I generally find cats like this to be calmer btw, the Garfield type cats are actually pretty active :S

it's a shorthair (I guess an American short-hair, from what others are saying...im not an expert on cat breeds) but the pattern on the coat is a mackerel tabby, which is just a coloration/coat pattern that a lot of breeds can have.

I used to have a calico tortoiseshell, she was a very pretty cat. Tabby only looks good if they are silver tabbies IMO.

I agree that you should get pets from animal shelters but I'm surprised your animal shelters put down healthy animals. One of our charities (RSPCA) did that, the word got out and they were overtaken by others promising they never would. Other charities, such as the Dogs Trust (whose slogan is 'we never destroy a healthy dog' ), ended up taking all the donations.
Charities still obey the laws of the market and over here at least it's not cost effective to put down healthy animals.

Cats don't end up in a shelter because they are messed up, they end up there because stupid people get a pet they don't really wanna have, or some giant morons don't want to get someone to take care of them while they are on vacation so they just put their pets out on the streets.
So like people have said, go get a cat from a shelter please !

also be careful not to get one of these :

Taking one from a shelter is a really good thing to do, we have 3 cats at home, and the last one is from a shelter. You probably coulden't find a nicer cat than she is, she has NEVER bitten anyone or scratched anyone no matter how much you have played with her.
My mom used to work voluntary at a cat shelter when she was looking for a permanent job, and as kwark also said, they dont put down cats here either, they are not allowed to and if someone did, it would really make alot of ppl mad. And the shelters get so many requests during the end of the summer, because alot of stupid families buys a kitten in the spring, but they are only kittens for a short time, and when the summer ends they dont want it anymore. So many stories about cats ending up in a bag in the trash can and cats dumped at scrapyards, makes me sad to think about all the nasty things we human does to defenseless and innocent animals.
Really, play for fun!

Only two people got it right in this thread wow.

Tabby's make for great companions. I've had two Tabby cats and they're very affectionate and in some cases behave a lot like a dog.

My cat smacks me around in the morning at around 6-7AM for his food though when I was house sitting for my parents. It's annoying -_-

Get a cat from a shelter or adoption agency, they have way to many and there are always more to be taken in, because cats go into heat every 3 weeks for 3 weeks (6 week cycle).

I miss my cat, I wonder what her race was, she looked sort of like a mix of a persian cat with an orange tabby - long orange/red hair and white belly, plus a nice face, not a "squelched-nose"

I have a grey british shorthair... I've had a lot of cats (all from animal shelters) and I have to say this breed is really nice! My cat behaves like a dog and follows me wherever I go, drinks from the sink, pees and craps on the toilet. "Awww".

Consider getting a black cat if you are open to other breeds besides the orange tabby. I know my local shelter has a problem since people still believe black cats are bad luck... over 50% of the cats in the shelter are black.

Make sure you know what kind of personality of cat your wife likes as well and get to know the cat before you take into your care. Personality will be more important than looks as time goes on and the initial cute factor wears off.

Most of the cute cat photos and videos people post are of the kittens, 1~6 months. Don't be fooled by these. I hardly find any grown up cats to be appealing unlike dogs unless they're Persian.

Are cats more easier to take care of than dogs? I'm considering getting one, but if they're like raising another kid (essentially what dogs are) then I'd give up.

stalking cat was good video..
cats are just awesome though..

inform the thread when OP made a selection..
my parents spent about 900$ on a pair of cats from this breeder.. When one of my original and family-raised cats disappeared my moms was rather upset about it and eventually wanted to get another cat..
they kinda researched 'em and found out that she wanted a type called 'ragdolls' because they're specially breed to be big cats, like Garfield.. and kinda lazy.. just laying around the house etc and whenever u pick 'em up, they're supposed to be limp and easy-going etc..

so ya - they got those cats.. and I was totally livid w/ the idea.. 900$!? for some cats?! u know how many cats u coulda saved from a shelter for that much ><
There was no way they coulda justified the decision to me.. was / is rediculous to pay that much for some animal, domestic anyway.

I fully support adopting pets through animal shelter, but I wouldn't say that is an accurate comparison since the rate of the children being abandoned due to their psychological problem is scarcly low compared to the animals being abandoned due to their behavioural issues. Sure there are some children in orphanage that have remaining family, sometimes even a parent, surrendered to the Orphanage due to difficult circumstances dictating that they can no longer be cared for at home, but rarely on the basis of their psychological problems. I wouldn't say the same about the pets in animal shelter in terms of ratio.

yes, they are all vaccinated, but i think its pretty absurd to claim that none of them have psychological problems. they ended up in a shelter for a reason

That's like saying we shouldn't adopt orphan children because they "ended up in a shelter for a reason".

I pad trained my puppy in literally 3 days (those absorbent pads), and 3 years later, she hasn't gone anywhere else even one time. I will admit dogs are more needy, for attention and exercise though. All depends on taste.

Wow you managed to pick on one spelling mistake after severe examination. Congratulations. Your sentences are full of gramatical mistakes I wouldn't know where to begin. For one you do not know how to form a proper sentence, rather you're just listing the words in random order without using suffixes or auxiliaries. I know it's hard to get proper education in Romania especially in the face of financial crisis but I encourage you to never lose hope.

The cat you're searching for could be a tabby british short hair cat. Look for those, but don't buy a cat from professionals! There are enough cats searching for a good home...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Shorthair

They come in many different colors, so don't be afraid that they don't have any specific pic of the cat you're looking for.

On the other hand I've been trying to teach my cat not to jump on my computer monitor and there's nothing I can do Even talked to a pro trainer and basically you can only teach a cat how to do something that he already wants to do, but at your command (eg.: coming to you when you call him). You cannot teach a cat to do something he doesn't want to (eg.: not climbing in my monitor)

Putting a big bowl of water on top of a monitor sounds like a really bad idea.

I wish I wasn't a bit allergic to cats D:

This past weekend I stayed with some friends who have 2 cats, visited a person who has 2 cats, and stopped by the house of someone with 3 cats for a few minutes. Good thing I had some OTC allergy pills lol.

That Maru cat was jokes, especially the box bit.
I got 3 cats, they're kinda neutral with each other which kinda sucks, although Calisto pisses Chelsea off at night because she's still a kitten and goes a bit mental
