Well by country I mean a sovereign state, an actual independent nation. While England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all constituent countries of the UK it really doesn't mean much today, they're essentially like the States of the US.

With different national teams, sometimes different languages, different parliaments, different tv stations, different flags, very different accents, and lots of rivalry? To me, it's like saying France and Germany are just states of the same country, Europe. But I guess, with a scot in power, there is a certain degree to which the parliament of the United Kingdom is not the parliament of England ><.

Only a very small minority of people speak a language other than English. The parliaments have quite limited power, Westminster is the highest authority UK-wide. Sure there are different flags, but US States all have their own flag, the national flag is still the Union Flag, not the Saltire or whatever. So the BBC has different regional TV stations, I'm sure this happens in every country. People from the north and south of England speak with different accents, this makes them separate countries? Rivalries between different regions also exist in every country. The national teams are pretty much the only thing that define them as separate countries and it was probably kept mostly for the classic England-Scotland rivalry in football and rugby and in some sports there are GB teams and there will undoubtedly be more in future. France and Germany don't share the same government, language, national flag, TV channels, internet TLD code or anything else that a country generally has.

Also, GB is just the british isle, not ireland/nth ireland. North Ireland is covered in the UK I think. It is always just confusing as to which is the sovereign state because GB even enter events as Great Britain instead of the United Kingdom -_-

Yeah I know that technically the French and Germans are light years away compared to us and the scots, BUT comon. Go to the streets of Glasgow or the streets of Manchester and ask 'what nationality are you?', I'm willing to bet people would say English or Scottish a lot more frequently than British. A lot of Wales speaks Welsh as well. And each of the countries in the UK does have a head of state, doesn't it? Welsh prime minister, Scottish prime minister, Northern Irish president. Besides if the current Scottish parliament party gets its ultimate goal, it WILL have its own parliament. Which tbh I can't see as being a bad thing seeing as SO much of the ridiculous amount the Government pays out in welfare goes to Scotland.

I think the head of state is still the queen for the entire country, regardless of the first ministers and such. You're correct in that if you ask the average person in the street what they consider themselves many of them will say English, Scottish, Welsh or whatever but if you take a look at their passport it will tell a different story.

So 65, +4 that didn't register because the game make doesn't know what a country is. Wales/etc are as much countries as New York State, California and Texas are countries. Sorry brahs, distinct regional histories =/= country. If you all vote for and are represented in the United Nations by one guy, you are all one country.

On January 30 2009 02:18 HamerD wrote: Yeah I'm not trolling. The thing is that in most states of the USA you'll find people who are like 'YEAH...TEXAS...kicking everyone's ASS'. But just as many people going 'GO USA (get a brain morans)' etc. In Scotland, England, or Wales, you rarely find people saying 'GO BRITAIN!' unless it's for the olympics. I don't know it just feels different from your distinctions of states. ps jello are you from scotland? Yeah people in the UK are more proud and identify themselves more heavily with their provincial/state designation, ie scottish/welsh/etc vs the United States (ie south dakotan, arizonan), but from a perspective of political perspective it's irrelevant. The people in the UK all vote and are represented by one person at the executive level, the Prime Minister, and ergo are one country. Distinct regional history/pride =/= distinct countries. This question is obviously a lol one because its analytic (true/false by definition) in nature. It's a question of whether Wales/etc fits into the definition of country. Since we aren't arguing about the actual nature of what Wales/etc is we are just arguing about the definition of "country". Still fun tho.

The China / Taiwan debate is much more interesting: everyone in Hong Kong admits to being part of China. Also the song is from the early nineties, before HK was transferred.

I failed so hard on this, I got 31. I couldn't spell like 8 of them and spent a good 2 minutes trying to figure out the UK's, I am going to try this again later when I am fully awake, I usually am pretty good at geography.
