Ok quick question here but I'll try to make a detailed post as to invoke some detailed responses..
Do you have your thumb and/or pinky touching your mousepad?
I have had some very interesting results when experimenting with the various options.
As some of you know I am on an epic quest to switch from right handed to left handed mousing, I started using my left hand for everything on December 2nd and am still with it despite still sometimes having trouble with feeling confident with my mouse hand.
As a measuring stick I hope noone has a problem with me referencing this game...
I've played this game a TON, my best time with my right hand shortly before my switch was 2.825 which IMO is very good.. I broke 3 seconds for the first time at a lan in August,2008 while preparing for a WC3 match and have gotten under 3 many times and still can manage this even though I haven't been using my right hand for a couple months now.
Now with my left hand I have only been able to break 4 seconds (3.XXX) a handful of times.
When I did right hand mousing I would always have my pinky/thumb touching the mousepad.. I used very high mouse sensitivity and I noticed I was often TURNING my tiny mouse instead of moving it as a whole..
EG Turn counter clockwise and the bottom of my mouse will go to the right which is where the sensor is.
It occured to me that having fingers touching a surface can cause undesirable inconsistancies as you have to contend with moisture on fingers etc etc..
I am now experimenting with keep whole hand on the mouse without having anything touching and at first I found it VERY hard to maintain control but I then lowered my sensitivity a TON, like 4-5 notches on the windows mouse CP and was immediately able to attain very low times on game like popoint and felt very in control.
Bla bla bla this went on too long but I wanted to get to a conclusion so I could get other peoples opinions on it.
My conclusion is that having no fingers touching is optimal, I THINK this is the consensus with pro gamers as well as I have made a point of looking at their mouse hands whenever I see them and have not seen a lot of finger/mousepad contact EXCEPT Boxers old videos seen HERE:
Where he in typical emperor fashion has his pinky cocked out and uses it for stability.
I'd like to make a request for videos/pictures of progamers mouse hands while they are playing.
I'll add a poll also...
One more thing to add is that if you are going to do the experiment of trying both methods out, make sure you lower your sensitivity A LOT A LOT A LOT if you are going from fingers touching pad to fingers not touching pad.
Poll: Do you ride your mouse? (Vote): Yes, I have no fingers touching my mousepad when I play. (Vote): No, I have both my thumb and my pinky touching my mousepad when I play. (Vote): I have just my thumb touching. (Vote): I have just my pinky touching.
I find it very easy to keep all my fingers off the mousepad, I have really no idea how you even move the mouse while your hand/fingers are touching the pad.
I rely on low sensitivity and quick hand movement to get a good mouse speed if I need it.
Edit: Dude if you want people to read the thread just call it "Jaedong vs Flash vs Bisu Holiday FFA" duhh
It's a title that prompts a user to read.. that's exactly what a good title is supposed to do. Unless the process of reading the title to reading the content is difficult a title that makes someone curious is almost always better than a title that is exclusively descriptive.
Do you think something like "CPU Mouse Usage Query" is better?
Funny you should ask that question b/c I just picked up a razer salmosa today, and have been pondering how to hold this thing.. With my old mouse, I had all of my fingers on the mice, but now b/c of the shape of the new one, I find it much better to have the pinky resting on the mousepad.
Edit: Though actually testing it out, I might be lifting my pinky up for a lot of the time. Hard to say.

Yeah that is the mouse I'm using now, it's the smaller version only available in asia, I would honestly try to get used to not having anything touching your mousepad. It's possible my convictions are only so strong because they are new and I'm seeing immediate results but I'd say if you can't manage to keep your fingers on it after a few weeks of trying to look for a wider mouse like the G1 or mini optical

Yeah I will be lifting my pinky most of the time I think now. I managed to find a comfortable position with it right beside my ring finger, and I can always place it down if I need the support.

I really have to suggest lowering your sens and trying to keep all fingers off of your mousepad.. I feel this is a huge revelation for me, try it anyways.
I have my thumb/pinky/ring finger all touching. I just feel I have better control over small movements when my fingers are slightly grounded on my mousepad.
wow I never thought about this. Unfortunately at work I use the ball mouse and keyboard so I'm trying to picture what I do, but when I get home that's the first thing I'm gonna do but afaik I don't touch the mousepad at all.

This is how my hand is when I am scrolling pages/surfing web.

I have noticed this when I am in a intense bw game.
I am scoring around 5-6ish but I am here at work using a mouse with ball on bottom....I am sure I can break at least 4s if I am at home..
that game is kind of luck based - if the colours spawn in the same location or you have your cursor over a point and the earliest numbers spawn there at the beginning then you save much more time, but nonetheless it seems a good exercise to practice

At a certain point of proficiency the luck factor is almost completely silenced because you are able to snap to any location immediately, I certainly agree that for someone with an average of over 4-5 their times will be partially dictated by the actual distance their mouse is having to travel.
With times under 3 seconds you are clicking over 5 per second the travel time for each movement isn't going to experience much variation.
On January 30 2009 03:12 Disregard wrote: Love these games, get addicted to them pretty fast. I try to do them daily.
Yeah I played yesterday for over 5 hours straight trying to figure some things out and just not feeling happy enough with my current set up to go play... I'm really happy with the conclusions that session helped me reach so yeah these kinds of games are absolutely helpful.
I'm very excited to just get up tomorrow and play like 35+ games.
What if only my thumbnail and the tip of my pinky touch the pad? I'm essentially riding the mouse (it's not like I could use either finger to actually change my mouse movements at all) but I'm still barely touching the pad.

I'll take your word for it - I average 4-5 right now as a matter of fact. Seems fun anyway
Why in the name of christ are you trying to become left handed? That's a shit load of effort you're putting into something for literally no reason lol.
Hey, I'm looking for other mouse speed/accuracy games. I know there have been a bunch posted in the past here. There was one in particular that was a series of 1-5 numbers at varying sizes that respawn every time and you had to click them all in like a minute.

Probably fine, I might try to pick them up a centimeter, the logic basically follows...
Any contact = inconsistant contact = inconsistant pressure = inconsistant power needed for moving your mouse the same distance.
EDIT: I hope it's obvious why that is bad.. it basically makes it so you have a form of mouse acceleration.

Assuming using your right/left hand is entirely equal as far as keyboarding and mousing goes, there is a lot to be said for what you can pick up when you are relearning something.. It's been almost 2 months now and I can say the experience has been helpful in many unexpected ways.
I can already beat most people on this forum at mouse accuracy games etc.. and the commitment has fulfilled itself passively, it's not like I had to dedicate time to it, you just do things normally but with your other hand.
I can kind of tell by your arrogant and offensive posts you are pretty close-minded so I'll paste some relevant quotes from another currently active thread and add that I'm not that interested in hearing your opinion based on the posting style I have seen you so consistently exhibiting.
"There are so many "intelligent" people who argue or defend when a new idea clashes with the way they think. in this case, their so-called "intelligence" combined with "arrogance" equals "ignorance"
"A truly intelligent person welcomes new ideas, for new ideas can add to the synergy of other accumulated ideas. Listening is more important than talking. If that was not true, God would not have given us two ears and only one mouth. Too many people think with their mouth instead of listening to absorb new ideas and possibilities. They argue instead of asking questions."

That bunny game starts sucking as soon as you get used to it, then its just matter of how long can you waste your time.
It does not help that you can't even brag with the scores because they bug out as soon as you reach a certain number as it supports only a limited amount of them, unless that is fixed now.

Didn't Midas do a bunch of things lefty for awhile to improve his game. I feel like it's in the sense of star blog that I can never find when I want it to.
Basically the idea is that if you do a bunch of things lefty when you're used to using your right hand you form new connections and allow the right side of your brain (the side used to control your left half of your body) to grow so you can be smarter.
I can write legibly with both my left and right hand, I don't think I'm going to be "fluent" in my left handedness.

Good day to you Sir.
Dude if you have a problem with me stop PMing me, that's two in the last week. I never unpause on someone during the early game but closer to mid-game I find pauses throw me off my game and cut up my APM and momentum.
Why do you think you can't have bathroom break pauses in KESPA sanctioned games.. it has an impact.
Iccup isn't fucking Denny's, you can't just come and go as you please.
It's not as if I waited for you to leave the room and then unpaused.. please get over it.
EDIT: For the record I have no idea if this ever actually occurred

But... this is related. What size mouse should I buy? I'm guessing people will say it depends on my style or something... Either that or people won't even care enough to respond.
I have pinky and sometimes ring finger touching, and I'm pretty sure it's not a good way to go. It causes inconsistent friction, it dirties the mousepad, it's just not a good way to hold the mouse.
The game doesn't seem to be about physical agility as much as finding the right place to click.
Probably best with a smaller mouse, you need to move fast. However, having good control is also really important. I just got a razor salmosa and I am pretty well used to it now. It's a really nice medium-small mouse. I also just lowered the sensitivity and increased the overall moving speed and the results are have proven to be pretty nice.

Are you saying pausing in the middle of a game doesn't have an impact? I don't understand the motivation for your post, it doesn't have any bearing on what I said.

? 'you cant have bathroom break pauses in kespa sanctioned games" is obviously discredited by someone pausing to do something less significant than go to the bathroom. perhaps i should have added "in a kespa sanctioned game and wasnt disqualified" however i assumed that would be obvious as i didnt know you were retarded.
as for your general point, sometimes situations arise, beyond someones control, that would disturb their playing more than having to pause for a minute would disturb yours, so you are a fucking douchebag if you unpause for no reason.
i don't unpause games on iccup, unless i'm waiting for like 5 minutes, and they paused without saying wait, or 1 sec, or something. If someone just pauses the game, and goes afk for like 5 min, i'm like wtf? so i sit there spamming "?" for like 5 minutes, and then I do a count down from 60 to when I'll unpause. Unless they say something like "sorry 1 sec" or anything to say that they are there but have to do something.

Um, so because someone did something less significant, you assume something more significant is allowed?
So because blowing nose is aloud.. anything more significant and that will take more time/cause further disruption is aloud? How can you possibly make a post that implies this and then call someone else a retard?
On February 19 2009 01:22 CTStalker wrote: LOL he justifies unpausing in an iccup game because he thought it wasn't allowed in the fucking osl. lmao
I only mentioned that it isn't aloud to show that it is accepted that it is a disturbance. When I am playing I am trying to win, or more importantly learn, a games flow and momentum are important for me to do that.
I have never unpaused during the beginning of a game before the game has basically started, but when I am playing and the game has picked up to an aggressive pace, I usually just F10-R as if it where my next in game action without thinking.
Not that I'm saying it's an accident but my mind is doing so much I just don't want to turn it off and wait, for me, it can change how I play the remainder of the game.
its spelled 'allowed' and you're a dumbass. hardly worth explaining. sometimes shit happens that requires a pause. that doesnt give you a right to a free win. i find it laughable you say "or more importantly learn". ya you're gonna learn alot playing an afk opponent.

What is going on lmao. Did you actually just correct my spelling? It wasn't even a spelling error you fucking moron it was the wrong selection of a homophone.
This isn't fucking 1999, pointing out grammar errors doesn't work on the internet anymore.
I don't think I have ever witnessed a player go afk when I unpause immediately, they either don't answer their phone or put off whatever they were going to do until the end of the game which is how it should be.
To alter a quote from Boiler Room, a game of Starcraft isn't fucking Denny's, you can't just come and go as you please.
If I'm playing someone I know of course I let them pause but to inconvenience myself and give the benefit of the doubt to every random I run into on iccup when over 80% of the people I talk to and get to know for 5 minutes I find marginally to extremely objectionable is just not something I feel the need to do.
On a more personal level since you seem so desperate to bring it there, what the fuck is this: "its spelled 'allowed' and you're a dumbass."
Like what if I just responded: "'A lot' is two words, there is no such thing as alot, and you're stupid."
Are you so incapable of a civil conversation just because you disagree with me and think that I should offer patience to anyone I play whether I know them or not while I'm trying to do something I enjoy?
People post stupid shit to me all the time but I've never seen someone be so dismissive and self-righteous while maintaining such obviously low quality posts.
It's abundantly clear that you think all of your opinions are the cats friggin' pajamas, I'm not surprised you're trying to flame me because it's very obvious you enjoy expressing your superiority over people.
However, considering I don't think I've ever seen you make a post that expressed a positive opinion of anything or anyone and I associate this with a "fuck everyone who hasn't proven they're worthy" mentality... I'm surprised you can't at least see my position that I am willing to fuck over people I don't know if it is to my liking... and it has nothing to do with a free win or I'd wait for them to go AFK. Reading the iccup forums is convincing enough that on average I could care less if someone has to delay whatever they wanted to go do.
Having said that if someone said "omg dude my cat is meowing like crazy I have to let him out", I would absolutely not unpause until he got back.
If someone has already been well mannered to me in some way, I will always let them pause. Straight up I just don't give people the benefit of the doubt, way too many objectionable people who play video games. Ever waited for someone to come back at an important moment and had them unpause without warning while you are stretching or some shit? I have, fuck that.

If me not inconveniencing them causes dissatisfaction for myself, then yes, surely you are least agree that on average people online are deplorable and unworthy of such considerations?
It's not just 'being a prick' because normally not being a prick can be done passively and is not an inconvenience whereas I find that stopping my games mid-way through detracts from my experience.

This is rather unrelated to the topic, but I think it's appropriate here.
One time, I was playing a random pubby Bnet. I think it was on Luna. About 10 minutes into the game, my opponent paused and said "brb fire". I waited about 2 minutes, and then he came back and said "k im good now. go?". I was like, wtf. I totally lost too.
On topic: It depends on what game I'm playing. Both my fingers touch when I'm playing SC. Neither touch when playing FPS's like CS. Dunno why really.

No way, I never have any of my fingers touching the table unless I purposely do it for ultimate control. Usually flash games which require pinpoint accuracy will force me to turn sensitivity down all the way and put my pinky on the table to guide my mouse. Other than that I see no point in doing that. This flash game, however, did not require my to use my pinky. My best time is 4ish seconds, until I got bored that is.
