Post a band you like that you assume other people haven't heard yet, nothing too main stream please. Be sure to describe the type of music and why you like it. You absolutely HAVE to put a link to some sample of their music, i recommend using myspace for this. Only one band per post please. DO NOT POST IF YOU CAN'T FIND A SAMPLE OF YOUR ARTISTS SONGS.
This is a French DJ known as 0Sebastian0. i recommend clicking on the 'ross ross ross' song. I discovered him through a friend about two months ago and i'm still listening to him steadily. His music is a mix between electro big beat and glitch. I enjoy listening to his works while playing SC on iccup.
Angtoria. Symphonic metal. Symphonic metal is usually female-vocals and has a lot of symphonic instruments backing up the bands sound. This band is very goood, high levels of energy.
This is a very particular band called Nevermore. They've already been around a long time, and they have a very interesting style. The vocalist has an amazing range, from soft, high notes to growls. It's hard to categorize them, but progressive thrash metal probably fits best. This song is called Believe in Nothing. The lyrics are generally about political and social issues.
They're a metalcore/screamo band from Fremont, CA. I saw them live not too long ago and they're pretty awesome. Melee and Until We Have Faces are probably their best songs imo out of the songs they have posted.
A 'Hip-Hop Supergroup' comprising of underground artists from Philadelphia origionaly, but generally East Coast. Artists in the group consist of Vinnie Paz, Kamachi, 7L & Esoteric, Outerspace, Apathy, Celph Titled, Reef the Lost Cauze, Des Devious, Faez One, King Syze, Jus Allah, Doap Nixon, Demoz and King Magnetic (although not all at once ). I like them because they have some of the best beats around, incorporating strings, horns, piano aswell as conventional stuff. Lyricaly, Celph Titled is my favorite, as his punch lines are incredibly witty.
My Pick for 2007's album of the year with The Habit of Fire. (I'm slowly, but surely writing reviews and analysis of this stuff, might even put it on my blog ;o). Kekal is simply put, a genre bonanza of exceptionally well constructed music. Their albums move between dozens of influences, from progressive thrash to trip-hop, dangdut to ambient and the lyrics in turn, cross a number of genre lines. However, all of these influences remain tightly bound together, thematically bound by Kekal's lyrical focus on questioning both their own existance in the new Indonesia, as well as Indonesia's place within the world. I think it's the last quality which makes their work so powerful and keeps it from degenerating into psuedo-progressive instrumental wank without focus. Those concerns also lend their music an everyman appeal, as much of their concerns the isolation people feel with the world around them.
All the stuff from The Habit of Fire would be my recommendation. The new, unreleased album is going to be more or less a solo work from one of the band members under the Kekal name, which is why I recommend Habit (I also consider it their Magnum Opus).
"Folk Rock" or something like that, I guess. The songs are catchy, you might not like John K's voice, but he writes the most amazing, poetic and clever lyrics I've ever heard, ever. ever. EVER OK?
great band from minnesota. i would describe them as video game metal (they covered the tetris theme song and it's awesome). but their sound varies from song to song.
The Supervillain. MFDoom is probably known to some hardcore hip hop fans, but besides that hes still pretty underground. He has the best rhymes of any rapper I have ever heard, and this myspace page definetily does not showcase his best works.
If you really want the good sound, search for the album Madvillainy, which is his collaboration with Mad Lib (the beat junkie from Stones Throw Records)
Persuader is a thrash/power metal from Sweden. Their vocalist has been likened to Hansi Kursch in pretty much every article that has been written about them. I don't know if I agree with that, but he's definitely, along with Hansi, one of my favorite vocalists.
pretty cool dj from brazil. probably the most creative sampler out there since aphex twin. in some of his songs he incorporates elements from several different genres including ambient, trip hop, hip hop, jazz, samba, blues, breakbeat and drum & bass. i like his more jazzy/ambient stuff. check out the tune "easy muffin" for some nice dark acid jazz.
Just the most unbelievable band. Prog/metal/pop/atmospheric/ultra space funk but you really can't pin it down.
The guy, Jem Godfrey, doesn't really care about the band because he writes music for pop acts and makes enough money, but his music in this band is truly unbelievable. Listen to the whole of hyperventilate, his keyboard solos, the fantastic drumming, the different changes of mood whilst still serving the song. You just have to listen to this!
They aren't that well known and never will be, but actually my friend knows Jem . Seriously anyone who is into music and listens to this band will know there is something good.
They're a Scottish kind of thrashy metal band. They have six songs out, and three of them are really good. I got in touch with their bassist over Cybernations.
Probably the most mainstream of the bunch, their's is a style I like to call white trash dope rock. Truly awesome. Check their albums God Says No and Monolithic Baby for further reference.
Pretty much the entire soundtrack of the anime FLCL is by The Pillows, a japanese beach rock band, and even though I don't speak their language, much like Rammstein the music speaks for itself. Just plain groovy delicious engrish.
On their way into mainstream I believe, if not already there, but just like MM not many people seem to know of them still. Perhaps because their music is so specifically psycadelic. These guys sound like The Doors reborn.
Edit: Just read the bit with "one band per post". Sowwie, please feel free to crop my post if you want.
Edit2: just listened through all the suggestions, and so far I like crippled black phoenix, N.B.S, Army of the Pharaohs, Monoral, Tesseract, Gutter Twins (vocalist kinda sounds like Chris Reah...) and Frost*.

Don't forget Cuninnlynguists 616 Rewind is a such a gooddddd song

Zion I ft Talib Kweli - Temperature Jedi Mind Tricks - On the Eve of War (and the remix, ofc ) EazyE - Real Thugs ft Tupac/Ice Cube Cuninnlynguists - Dying Nation JAG - Crazy G's ft Biggie Afu-Ra - Hip Hop Trel Mack - Bigger than Life Lazee - Top Notch Naughty By Nature - Hip Hop Hooray Az - New York [Cookin Soul remix]
This is in my opinion one of the best Breakcore artists out there these days, when most people see "Breakcore" they tend to think of Venetian Snares and yeah he's good but the super cut up, abstract and complex beats of Xanopticon is far superior imo. his beatslicing is so insanely precise into the last millisecond, it's pure insanity.
I recommend you listen to Stable Fire on his myspace page, it's not the craziest stuff he's ever done so people not too familiar with the genre will most likely survive.
Breakcore is definitely not for everyone but if you like artists like Aphex Twin, Enduser, The Flashbulb but still want something harder, you're definitely gonna like Xanopticon.
Dr. Octagonecologist by Dr. Octagon aka Kool Keith has to be the most surreal yet amazing underground hip-hop album ever made. Any self-respecting hip-hop fan who misses out on this album is doing a serious disservice to himself.
This Pitchfork review sums up the album nicely: + Show Spoiler +
"The winner of the award for the "most creative uses of the word 'rectum,'" Octagonecologyst is an underground hip-hop classic starring Kool Keith's most famous persona, Dr. Octagon, whose blindingly scatological rhymes mixed sci-fi, sex fantasy, and medical horrors (chimpanzee acne? moose bumps?). Rolling on DJ Q-Bert's scratching and Dan the Automator's production-- which bumps like a space-station bootycall-- Dr. Octagon's even, surreal flow comes straight outta Jupiter on "Earth People", camps up the EC comic book of "halfsharkalligatorhalfman", and then slides into slow delirium on "Blue Flowers". Even if there's something voyeuristic about studying this man-- who in real life, may or may not have done time in Bellevue-- it works because it's gripping, not gawk-worthy: Keith is in control of his delusion, and he unravels it into a kind of virtuosity. Look away and you'll miss one hell of a brilliant car wreck."

This man has a great taste in music. I'm gonna recommend Ayreon though, a progressive metal band, just because their latest release kicked THAT much ass (Hansi was on it, by the way). If you haven't heard of them, check out The Human Equation.
Here's a song from The Human Equation. Recognize James Labrie of Dream Theater?
Here's some vocal samples of Hansi on Ayreon's most recent album, 01011001:
And finally, here's my favorite song from 01011001:
Atavist http://www.myspace.com/atavist Not for the faint of heart. Even your average metalhead probably won't quite get this. Music that expresses every negative emotion concievable at the same time. They play a wide range of styles, from a purely ambient/post rock type of thing to extreme sludge.
And since tl tends to throw tantrums when too many metal artists get posted:

Ok so first one is called Arts the Beatdoctor and it's an artist from the Netherlands, here is his myspace profile http://www.myspace.com/artsthebeatdoctor his first album called Transitions is in my opinion one of the best albums of 2007.
The second artist is called Dj Day, it's a dj from California, and his album The Day Before is one of my all time favorites. Especially listen to song called Closer, http://www.myspace.com/djday
Brother Irrational is one of my favorites. If you enjoy this band and snowboarding, you might enjoy a snowboard movie called Elekrep. It's peppered with their music.
the pillows are playing here some time soon in the SXSW lineup
to people who might enjoy jazz fusion in a funky contemporary weather report vibe, snarky puppy is a gem. band originally from denton tx (unt town) now touring, I saw em open for vic wooten in dallas. solid solid stuff
A couple brothers from my homecity Phoenix, ones on drums the other has a keyboard..Great percussion.. Lymbyc Systym: http://www.myspace.com/thelymbycsystym [Experimental Instrumental stuff, no vocals]
Recently lived in Dayton Oh and worked with a guy in a small local band.. Sleepybird: http://www.myspace.com/sleepybird [Indie Folk Rock, real mellow]
OK, I have two bands I'm going to post. Both of their music is kind of similar, kind of rock/punk/reggae. The first band is Passafire, I've seen them live and they ripped. http://www.myspace.com/passafire
This other band might be known to Canadians, it is illScarlett. I haven't seen these guys live, but god I want to. http://www.myspace.com/illscarlett

Its a small and not well known death metal band with 5 amazing songs. Check em out. Clicky-Myspace Link
They have a very unique sound, and for an American band that is cool considering its black metal
Steps to success as Abigail Williams: 1. Hot Keyboardist, she may or may not have any idea what's going on or even like or know anything about the style of music you intend to play. 2. ??? 3. Profit 4. The Keyboardist is a pretentious pile of wank who's more or less destroying the integrity of your band, just disband. 5. Reform band without hot keyboardist, WE'RE GONNA DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME. 6. Return to step 1, hire a different hot keyboardist.
As much as I'd love to tear this band to shreds for being from my hometown and for the Legend EP being among the worst peices of black metal ever recorded, I do have to admit the new tracks look like a big step forward. But for the love of all that is awesome, STAY THE FUCK AWAY from Legend if you want to maintain any respect for these assholes.
I've got to plug Indesinence as well, slow and morbid death/doom metal from UK. You won't find much of the fast paced testosterone drenched adrenaline pounding death metal here. Nor will you find the My Dying Bride-ish romanticism and mourning so commonly associated with doom. This band is has a menacing, diablolical, sinister feel to it. Listen to the opening riff on Dusk Towering Forth, is that not one of the most evil things produced by a guitar? http://www.myspace.com/indesinence
Freestyle - Korean group, started off hiphopy, now more nostalgic with good beats. they have a very "soulful" feel to their songs. 5th and 4th album are great. they can be found at getasianmusic.com under korean, media, and at the "1300+ links" sticky thread.

Mika Nakashima claim to somewhat fame was the movie nana. the song that is youtubed is one that i would recommend. The style varies from soft to punk rock. Its a personal choice at most i listen to 色(Hitoiro) during sc matches, i like soft shit mostly becuase i find a woman's voice more enjoyable then a man's.

sunset rubdown is amazing... the singer's first project Wolf Parade is one of my all time favorites. Wolf Parade!
This is "Leaf House" by Animal Collective (my namesake of 45 or so posts)
Here's a guy who calls himself "Girl Talk" - I thought some of you might be interested in this. His shows are freaking amazing. One solid hour of very fun.
Here's a band called Pomegranates who became friends with my old project. They're from Cincinatti and are really good/fun guys. Here's their myspace: Pomegranates!
One more... anybody here heard of The Go! Team? Hip hop like MIA, but way smarter... and just all around sweet. The Go! Team
Mathcore pioneers. Their guitarist and his highly unique approach to the axe went on to play in Minus the Bear and their sound has shaped mathcore ever since. The fact they created a song tearing apart the attitude of the band that went onto become Fall Out Boy makes it all the more fun.
It's progressive metal. And I think it's catchy as hell. I just can't help but (attempt to) sing along.
Circus Maximus kick massive fucking ass. I think the 1st Chapter is MUCH catchier than Isolate though; I really couldn't get into Isolate.
Also check out Mind's Eye, a kickass progressive metal band from Sweden. Their latest concept album, A Gentleman's Hurricane, is a masterpiece. http://www.myspace.com/eyeofthemind
Beautiful violin hip-hop. I haven't heard anything else like it yet. PM me if you want the album...
wow that's dope. i'll pm you for sure about that =D.
hip hop is my favorite - real hip hop though, not the trashy 50 cent shit that's all over the radio, though... so you could search up some old school beats like...
their new album leaked pretty recently, and despite it only being 28 minutes long theres a certain allure to their 2 minute pop song formula that makes me listen to it over and over. they are really upbeat and bouncy, and their music has a sort of youthful, infectious energy pouring out from it.
im tryin to keep it gangster up in this motherfucker

i hope you've heard Violent by Design by JMT. vinnie paz, jus allah and stoupe at their prime :O pretty much every track on that album is amazing.
I dont know if you will like it but i have found a weird live remix version of a French rap classic ( "je danse le mia" ) and i think it is one of the coolest video i have ever seen on youtube ( too bad you probably dont understand the funny lyrics :'( ) Bad sound quality nevertheless.
I usually dont like rap music but well IAM is awesome :D.
Edit: oh well, i forgot it was a thread about non mainstream ( here it is not ...) music T-T. Hmmmm i will try to give you some cool "underground" stuff tomorrow.
Edit2: Weird electro but really cool and it is not mainstream :
Edit3: a cool quite underground skacore band from France ( Kargol's ) performing live, ( but they splitted few years ago ) http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=zPWSDfwFgxI Bad sound quality too, but cool music .
