This topic is to Discuss your picks on who should win, since the nominees are now out. Don't bother discussing whether the movies should / should not be there, since it's sort of a moot point. Anyways, here we go: (I'm just going to do major ones)
Oh ya, I think all these movies were really damn awesome by the way. There were so many high quality movies that have come out in the past 3-4 months.
Best Actor George Clooney (Michael Clayton) Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) Johnny Depp (Sweeny Todd) Tommy Lee Jones (Valley of Elah) Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises)
Supporting Actor Casaey Affleck (Assassination of Jesse James... etc) Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) Philip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson's War) Hal Holbrook (Into the Wild) Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton)
Best Actress Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) Julie Christie (Away from Her) Laura Linny (The Savages) Ellen Page (Juno) Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose)
Supporting Actress Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There) Ruby Dee (American Gangster) Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton)
Best Picture Atonement Juno There Will be Blood No Country for Old Men Michael Clayton
---------------
My Picks Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem ... seriously he was fucking awesome in No Country. Actress: Ellen Page (hands down IMO) Supporting Actress: Not sure, the only ones I saw were American Gangster and Gone Baby Gone, and neither of them were that impressive IMO Picture: Toss up between No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood. Those two instantly went on my favorite movies list.
Daniel Day Lewis was incredible in There Will be Blood. I don't see anyone else getting it for best actor. The rest I think are a toss-up, except for maybe Ellen Page for Best Actress, although I haven't seen the rest of the movies in that category, so I can't really make that call.
2) nominations made me realize this year has been pretty bad. Juno, michael clayton, atonement, etc. altho they weren't bad, they certainly weren't good and the fact that Juno made the cut just hurts me inside
3) TWBB better win all its nominations. honestly i have a lot of faith in the oscars and i think they will give this movie all the recognition it deserves. anyway i could talk all day about how fucking great this movie is, but ill spare u guys
4) James Mcavoy should have gotten a nod. depp and viggo? r u serious?
I didn't think Zodiac was that great, American Gangster was really good, I was a bit surprised it didn't get nominated. I haven't seen Michael Clayton so I don't know how good it was...
I really can't decide between No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood ... they were both ridiculously good.
I kinda agree, Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen weren't that amazing, but who besides Mcavoy really should have been there? I think there were so many tossups this year because there were quite a bit of good movies.
[spoilers for TWBB. not really any spoilers, but dont watch this unless you have already seen the movie]
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!
EDIT: I just realized he says "I told you I would eat you" probably referring to what he whispers to eli in the church scene =] god this movie makes me hard
Really shocked that Juno and Michael Clayton got the nod over The Diving Bell and the Butterfly for best picture. I think TWBB should and will win that though.
Day-Lewis is the obvious frontrunner for best actor, I don't think any of the other performances are even close this year. Supporting actor should be Bardem, but Casey Affleck could be a sleeper. Best actress is a pretty weak category this year, I don't care who wins. Amy Ryan and Cate Blanchett were both pretty good for supporting actress, I'd toss it up between them.
Directing is a good category this year, and it really could go to either PTA, the Coens or Julian Schnabel.

agreed
director is gonna b tuf to nab =]
what did u think of TWBB btw?
I thought it was absolutely great. Easily PTA's best film yet. It was so dark, and Day-Lewis's performance was incredible. The score was amazing too, props to Greenwood. The atmosphere was amazing.
I made the mistake of seeing it with a girl who doesn't really like movies like that, all she did was fucking complain afterwards. I wanted to lean over, unlock my car door and boot her out on the highway like they do in action movies.

are these films really good, or are these the typical american oscar winning movies similar to titanic (=super bad despite 10+ oscars) or erin brokovitch (boring as hell)
I watched no country for old men and Juno today. No Country for Old Men reminded me of Grapes of Wrath, just really american classicky. Great acting, etc but I just didn't get that cathartic feel at the end somehow. Juno was really cute, I thought everything was great until Juno says i love you to the guy who got her pregnant cuz that guy had like no lines in the movie so that didn't really make sense. But indie films are always great and Juno is a good one. Awesome soundtrack and clothing in the movie. Now I gotta find blood simple and away from her.

they were actually all very good =o
and ya, I was a bit surprised that Michael Cera had such a tiny role in Juno. From the previews and stuff I thought it would really be about the both of them, but he's barely in the movie at all.
ok i'm trying to watch juno since everyone is fucking in love with it. i'm the sort of guy who got really really excited that there's a new Rambo movie, but my favourite movie is A Clockwork Orange, so I like many many things.
I'm ten minutes through this movie and every bit of dialogue has been utterly fucking terrible. i can't believe someone wrote this and thinks its decent, i really can't. there have been like 20 puns already and NONE OF THEM ARE FUNNY
why the FUCK do people like this movie? im gonna watch the rest of it and maybe my opinion will change
also to note: in the trailers they added in a gulping sound that is NOT PRESENT IN THE MOVIE because the fucking idiots who made the trailer THOUGHT IT WOULD BE HILAAAAAAAAAAAARIOUS. NICE WORK ASSHOLES
Well I was going to ask for some genuine criticisms of Juno....but I can see Fakesteve has utterly obliterated the movie already so I'll just give up and suck his dick.
Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis Supporting Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman/Javier Bardem (can't decide) Best Actress: Ellen Page Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett Best Picture: No Country for Old Men
So much hate Steve My friend also disliked the beginning dialogue but it does get better. Still, Juno probably doesn't deserve the best picture nomination but Ellen Page does deserve her nod.
Saw Michael Clayton today, was pretty good for the most part except like, Michael Clayton didn't actually do any cool stuff to deserve the ending imo, he just got the money handed to him and busted everyone up without doing anything OMG SPOILERS. So the story wasn't A+ for me, but the acting was. I watched Juno, No Country for Old Men and Michael Clayton in the span of two days and to be honest I'm not super impressed by any of the three. Maybe that's because I just watched Boogie Nights and that was truly amazing. But I guess if I had to pick right now I'd pick no country because it was exactly like reading Grapes of Wrath although it's a book I didn't particularly enjoy. I didn't like how the story ended and thought there was too much symbolism and not enough stuff happening.
I didn't think much of the last 20 minutes of No Country for Old Men which is a shame because I'm a big Coen brothers fan. Will give it another viewing before the ceremony though and hopefully will enjoy it more.
Only film I've not seen is hopefully the best one, There Will be Blood. DDL is just a superb actor and this film wouldn't even have to be in my top 3 DDL films to be the best of the Oscar nominees.
For me the best film not nominated at all is The Great Debaters.
hmm i just saw the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford
very impressed, y this didnt get a best picture nod instead of michael clayton or juno kind of blows my mind. in fact it makes me want to puke in a bucket and drown myself in it
altho i didn't like casey in gone baby gone, him as robert ford was impeccable. altho i think it was one of those roles he just fell naturally into perfectly, maybe because of physicality traits. not sure i still have mixed thoughts about this..
the soundtrack was really nice too, i am listening to it now
overall a very moving picture. saw it a few nights ago and it is still running through my mind.
