For all the hair experts here at TL, I have a quick question about hair styling. I just started using wax to shape my hair (thanks to Panorama ) but I realized that my hair keeps dying down and was still changing shapes long after I've applied wax. I noticed that my hair's often messed up especially after riding my bike against the wind.
What should I do? When I got my haircut, the lady used hairspray and my hair didn't budge all day. I have one now but it tends to form this white "dust" after some time and doesn't hold very well.
My current hair spray that I stole from home
So I'm just wondering what kind of hair spray is useful for keeping my hairstyle fixed for the rest of the day.
This is what my hair looks like now. My hair has some leftover wax from the day before... ;;
mmm it looks like Panorama had the exact same problem Good thing I decided to search before I posted *cowers away from haji* I just read through the thread but decided to post anyway because I'm looking for more specific advice. I'm not really looking for a gazillion other products because there are no asian markets around here so I have no idea where to get them.

By the way, I use "Dep" styling gel, strength 11 ("ultimate hold"). After applying it (to mostly-dry hair), I find holding my hair in place and using a blow-dryer yields the best results. I find the gel to be very effective at keeping my hair in generally the right shape, even for multiple days if necessary.
I'd suggest buying a small bottle at first, in case it doesn't work so well for you. I suppose you could even borrow some of mine, if you don't find that weird .
Gatsby Moving Rubber series. You can find it near your area probably in k-town, or c-town, but your best bet might be ebay.
*edit: Didn't read the no asian market place. You got to use some sort of wax, then hold it with hairspray. Are you spreading wax all throughout your hair from root to end? I mean, wax is pliable, you aren't going to freeze your hair in place like a helmet. Try got-2b glue hairspray from any albertson's or kroger's. I guarantee you though if you use some gatsby clay/wax, you'll have a much better hold.
consider getting a conditioner that is meant for increasing your hair's volume, which is something you can find in white stores too etc. you just want to avoid the 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner deals. Getting an asian shampoo would help (they have certain oils and whatnot in them that white shampoos don't have because white and asian hair textures are diff) but not THAT necessary.
the brand of shampoo/conditioner i use is called mods hair, it's japanese. So if you happen to see that anywhere you might want to look into it. But yeah, for now an american volume conditioner should help.
(and p.s. I got over the problem by actually getting decent wax (gatsby is pretty much on the low end though their moving rubber series are now much better I think), and having my hair cut/modified a bit so that my top-sides weren't so long and heavy)
Manoi is like some sort of korean wax, and the day I got my haircut, it stayed in shape the whole day (most stylist wont use gatsby in the salon). Problem is I cant find it in the states.
Pretty much what pano said will make you good to go, however I do not conditioner that often (i do it every other day). Just get asian brands and youre set. Also its important by the type of cut you have, like if youre side heavy etc etc etc
Thanks for all your help/advice/tips guys ^__^ I'll look into these specific products next weekend when I go back home. I'll be able to go to some asian stores then. For now, I bought some random aerosol hair spray for $8 (it was 60% off ) so I'll stick with that until I find the products that were recommended in this thread.

My hair stylist uses American Crew wax and Paul Mitchell Freeze & Shine spray. I've found the spray to be really effective in keeping my hair up, and I recommend it. At home, I haven't gotten around to getting a bottle yet, so I still use crappy L'Oreal hairspray. It's pretty cheap, but it usually gets the job done. The American Crew wax is amazing though. Great hold, and I like the smell a lot. The Paul Mitchell spray smells really good too.
if you want the "dry" look..try clay. You can probably only find it at an asian salon or mall. Theres only one store here in Richmond, BC that sells it (and it's in an asian mall) so i guess it's pretty rare.
and for the sprays, i think anything will do. Ive tried several and i think the L'oreal(sp?) Paris Finishing Spray works the best for me since its not as hard as plastic but still keeps its shape.
Guys, this guy's hair is pretty long. He's looking for more tousseled(spelling) look, not something hard and spikey. Ever try mousse? You can still lift your hair up and get some volume, or just hold it in place.

Yeah I've been a bit selective in taking in advice. Pretty much most gels are a nono for my hairstyle because I'm going for a more 'natural' look (i.e. no glossy/shiny hair). But there's been a lot of helpful advice in this thread I'm definitely looking into different brands of wax and hair spray. Plus, I'm not planning on getting a haircut for 3-4 weeks. I might get my bangs cut a little bit because they might be too long. I've tried mousse but it's been so long that I can't quite remember how my hair turned out. If I can get my hands on some, I'll try that out. I'm experimenting with a bunch of different products at the moment.
I'm probably going to regret saying anything... but I have to ask why people care so much about styling their hair. Normally I just comb it and let it air dry after a shower. The only time gel or spray is put in is directly after my haircut and while I don't notice my hair particularly benefits, it is gross later when I have to wash my hair again before I go to sleep. It might just be because of the type of hair I have? I have very thick hair so I'm not sure if that explains why I don't see the value of hair styling products or not. Then again I'm not one to value form over function.
Edit: As evidenced by the fact that I have said nothing for the last 8 posts about receiving a new icon (until now).

I have nearly no advice for you, because I cut my hair short, but I'm wondering what kind of styles there are to get with short hair. Right now I just do the pushing the front up (like all the famous guys are doing right now), except I can't get it to look nearly as good as they do. Basically I want my hair to look like Matt Damon's hair in the Bourne Supremacy, any tips on what kind of product to use?

I think the way some hair are cut (azn hairstyles or Mohawks n etc) are meant to be styled in some way. Also, styling and different hairstyles can express your personality/lifestyle in some way. Like your not going to see a 40 yo uptight businessman with a mohawk.
It's either that or your hair just looks gay when it's not gel'd properly,

It looks better when it's styled, and that's the only reason, really.
I recommend Gatsby Wax. They have a wide range of holds and levels of shine. It's a Japanese Wax that is very popular in Korea. You can get it on ebay.
The problem is your hairstyle looks thick. Thick hair is notoriously difficult to stick and hold. You can resolve this problem by blow drying near the roots shortly after applying whatever gel/clay substance you wish to use. However, if you do blow dry you're gonna end up with this really retarded looking platish look unless you have a blow dryer that is relatively small and can use very low power. Even if you do, blow dry volumizing takes a lot of practice. I suggest asking your barber to thin your hair SLIGHTLY if possible, and then applying gel or watever to your hair AFTER you wet and dry it. While your hair is in a 90% dry state you can style it very easily, and then hairspray it. The important thing is to not use too much gel, cuz it's very watery stuff and water is what is ultimately weighing down your hair when it begins to flop. Complicated hairstyles suck, i should know mine only lasts for about a week before it starts to look kinda whack. GL.

Any tips are thanks, sorry for the attempted threadjack, but I don't want to make a new one about the same thing.
Well, I have to get to class on time ;; I have 10 mins to travel from my business class at Wilfrid Laurier University to my advanced calculus class at the University of Waterloo. Definitely not possible by walking. The other alternative being running my ass off and that's an even worse choice. Not only do I arrive with messed up hair, I arrive all sweaty And np about the hijack.
I'll try to take some pics of me in the morning right after styling and after a long day of class (after my advanced algebra midterm )
Here's the perfect guide to doing your hair fast without being totally gay: Buy some gel, take a bunch of it and rub it in your hair, make sure it has the right form, and there you go. Just look confident or it's not gonna matter what your hair looks like anyway.
Seems kinda awkward to me for a guy spending more than 5 min on his hair every day, very awkward. To each his own I guess.

lol I do that except I use wax and I spray my hair quickly right after I'm done styling. The only time I spend more than 5 mins is if I blowdry my hair after a shower. I do agree that confidence is the biggest factor. Thankfully, I'm not one of those timid people who can't talk to others. Though I do act a little differently around attractive girls >_< And there are a few attractive asian girls on my floor woot~
I was going to post before and after pictures but then I realized my hair looks almost exactly the same. After a quick touch-up, it was back to what it was in the morning. I guess that's the power of a spray :O
Maybe I'll do it for a day when I don't use any spray. Anyways, I'll throw in a before picture just for the hell of it. The after picture looks more or less the same ~_~
My hair looks shiny in the picture but that's because the light was very close to me. It's not actually shiny.
By the way, I used wax and then sprayed my hair when I was done. Took me about 3-4 mins.
this got2be spiking hair glue is insane. it won't come out while you sleep or anything. You have to really wash your hair thoroughly to get it out all the way. Its expensive so I don't use it, I mostly just buy the big tubs of La Bella MEGA SUPER GOSU ULTRA 10 STRENGTH/INTELLECT/FIGHTING/ENERGY (insert other stupid adjectives) gel.
There are like pink, blue, green versions. I've used them all they mostly have a different smell (watermelons or whatever) but it wears off when the gel dries and doesn't really matter. its anywhere from 1 dollar (99cent store ftw) to 5 bucks for a tub of like i dunno 40 oz. It usually lasts me 3-5 months

Yea, I kinda did too. Its difficult to just wash off your hands fully when you are putting it on (especially when you're in a hurry all the time like me). It also sorta makes your scalp hurt from holding your hair in 1 spot, kinda like if you wore socks too long on your legs type of thing. But it only happens if you don't wash or change your hair for 2 days or more.

I'm using that got-2b right now, but I went to CVS the other day and there's ANOTHER LEVEL of it ABOVE that one lol from got-2b. If you play around with it well, you can get a natural, no gloss hold with it, but you have to be good with blowdrying and brushing.

Yup yup and yup. And I just realized today that strong wind screws up my hair anyways but it's not that hard to reshape. It takes about 10 seconds in front of the mirror to fix my hair.

lol I didn't expect this thread to be bumped To answer your question: no, it keeps going down so i have to keep fixing it throughout the day. Usually I just get lazy and let it fall.
Crazy ... for whatever reason I thought I read this topic like a year ago, not just two months ago. Anyway, in the same vein as the waxes, here's a pretty awesome cream that I've used almost exclusively for the past four years:
The hold on this stuff is pretty good, but as infinity noted with waxes, it will drop as time goes by (especially in warmer weather), and you'll have to "fix it." But you can just reshape it with your hands in a few seconds.
I highly doubt you can get your hair to stay up like that whole day. Your hair is too lengthy. I have somewhat spikey hair myself and the way i keep it up is to use the full advantage of the hair drier. You have to shape your hair before you put anything.
Here is my hair EVEN BEFORE placing the wax:
After I applied wax, it stays up like that whole day. Also make sure to spray hairspray where you think it should shine
There are videos you can download from Korean Stylists online. And they basically have how to "fix your hair" for each hair style.
I think for your hair, you shouldnt dry fully and wax while its still wet to fully take the advantage of clumping/wet look.
Also let me try to search VOD for you... not sure if i can still find it, I looked for them when i was in highschool and its been over 5 years ;P
Edit: there are alot actually on youtube. theyre mostly in japanese though
