I dont know about you guys, but I find this pretty shocking. Im paying around $30 a month for a 5mbit connection, of which I only recieve about 4.
According to the article in both japan and korea pay under $1 for each Megabit. Assuming they pay around $.80 that means for $80 they get a 100mbit connection..
$80 here in Canada gets you about a 25mbit connection (at least where I live) and you would almost never see the full 25mbits.
So I ask you teamliquid, how fast is your internet?
Poll: How Fast is your Internet? (Vote): <1 Mbits (Vote): 2Mbits (Vote): 3Mbits (Vote): 4Mbits (Vote): 5Mbits (Vote): 6-10Mbits (Vote): 10-15Mbits (Vote): 30-60Mbits (Vote): 60-100Mbits (Vote): HIGHER?! (pics or it didnt happen)
If you don't know how to test your connection go to Speakeasy.net and pick the server closest to you. You will get a speed in kilobytes per second, just divide it by 1000 to get your Mbit rating.
Edit :I wasn't thinking, for those of you outside of North America DSLReports has a great list of servers to test off of.
The internet I'm using right now is so slow, the page is still loading while I type this.
My normal internet connection is a shared 100 MBit. Usually I get up to 1 MB/s download-speed. My father however only has DSL 1000, which gives no more than 100 Kb/s. Still fast enough for most things.
The thing is, those of us in the USA and Europe are actually being hampered, internet-wise, by the fact that our countries have been rich for a long time. The reason is that, back in ye olde days, our countries built huge, well-developed telegraph networks of copper wire. When it came time to make the internet, people just thought "ooh, copper wire, let's use that", and ignored the fact that copper wire built for telegraphs doesn't really make the best interent connection. In Japan and Korea, they didn't have that, so they had to build a new network, based on fiber optics, specificically for internet, which works much better.
100 MBit. Internetwork transfers I'm usually able to maintain download speeds of around 50-60 mb/s. Download speed is also dependent on your disc write speed, not only your internet connection.
I can't show right now cause I'm DLing a huge ISO file. Which fucking froze at 96%..
its about 1.5D/0.6U
I am using time-warner cable (So Cal) which was added on to our current TV plan for only 19.99$ a month.
seems like a very good price?
It doesn't surprise me that asian countries are leading in internet tech. They lead in almost every other tech (cell phones, computers, etc) by like 2 years.
Its obviously a lot cheaper to fiber optic-ize those countries because they are a lot smaller when compared to the entire US.
I'm sure the government and military has just as fast speeds though. They're dicks like that.
LOLz , In Viet Nam I pay like 100$ in 2 months for 2Mbps line with download everage 100KB/s and play SC always lag ( no matter where my opponent comes from .... )
so the speed test says I have around a 750kb/s DL speed, but when I actually download things my average is around 80 kb/s.. and I have a great computer :/ id rather not make a new thread for this but do i have to tweak something or change settings somewhere or something?

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6cpdef7 Wow. My upload speed is fast. I believe I use the Earthlink cable gaming plan My actual surfing is far slower than this. Before I always had a 60kb download cap (never had been able to achieve faster rates anywhere), but lately with bitorrent it had been possible to achieve a 150kb cap. Nowhere near 1mb, and it falls significantly below the advertised speed.
Does anyone get download speeds anywhere near the test results? And even possibly the advertised speed?
I find this speed test to be more informative. I get similar dl/ul speeds, but it also shows web surfing speeds, which are much slower (avg ~230kb)

Can you really pay 1 dollar a month for that connection? Or are you just saying its like 30$ a month for 30x that?
Im just going off the article, i assume you wouldnt be able to pay $1 for a connection because you can double it for $2.. It probably starts around $10 or something for the "slow" internet. This is just speculation.
hmm, not very reliable site for me. I got between 500 and 2500 kbps both up and down on different servers. It even changed a lot trying twice on the same server... Maybe it is not optimised for europeans. Is there a test I can do from here?
My connection is a 100mbit up/down though (12.5MB/s), but I almost only come close to that from other swedes... And OSL finals torrents with hundreds and hundreds of hungry teamliquidians. I averaged 7mb/s upload on that torrent for like 12 hours.
I have a 100mbit cable :p I didnt know Japan had so nice internet. They must have gotten a lot faster quick. Last time I checked korea was #1 and sweden was #2 but that was a couple of years ago

Also, for the record, that is not your internet speed, but the speed your card handles. Pretty much every new computer has 100.0 Mbps ethernet card, so that doesn't mean anything. Take the test and see the real speed.

Huh? I'm in Canada, and $90/month is almost exactly what I'd pay together for Shaw's high-speed internet and basic cable bundle, plus a regular telephone land line (which, unlike a fiber-optic phone line, will keep working in power outage emergency conditions).
My internet is 5 Mbps for $40/month, but I could get 25 Mbps for $100/month or 10 Mbps for $50/month. The upgrade's just not worth it. I don't need to move that much data.
I can't find the site everyone is using, I looked up OOKLA but the test page looks quite different (actually I can see I'm at the right place, I just can't find that particular page, I used speedtest.net)

You should realize that for a painless game of SC (or any other game, for that matter), what is of utmost importance over all else is the PING, not the max download rate.
On another note, according to speedtest.net, the top 5 countries nowadays are Japan, Sweden, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria (in that order). I was mildly shocked.
I live in Darwin. I have 512k dl and thus upload . The worst part is knowing I can afford much more, but not being able to get it due to terrible line quality. 64
Overall I'm quite happy with my connection. Only paying 60 AUS dollars / Month
From memory, Most downloads from US sites are no slower than 500kb/sec. Even faster from established european sites and something around 700kb from taiwan, japan and korean sites. downloading from local sites are 1.6 meg per sec constant. very crappy download from Mainland China (no surprise) and Russia.
I've got 384kbps internet, and it's costing me 30$ p/m. Furthermore, I then pay 40$ p/m to my ISP for a 3gb cap, which means I can download a full 3gb's before my internet is cut off completely.
Don't bitch about internet in USA. We've got an internet monopoly in SA, and it doesn't get much worse than that.
EDIT: That download speed that everyone is getting should be the actual download speed as far as I know. Kb/s = Kilobyte per second, while kbps = Kilobit per second. I might be wrong though.

Why are all the folks with 2mbit+ upload never on the tracker? =P
Boondocks IL -- I live in Macomb and go to Western Illinois. Our internet is included in the apt rent and it is absolutely terrible. In the dorms I was downloading sometimes at around 1 MB/s sometimes which was amazing and usually had at least 3200 kbps ..
The US government needs to wise up and realize that letting Comcast control the cable internet for the entire country just lets the quality of it stagnate.
Nice bump to show off EvilTeletubby, lol. Really nice internet though! What's your ISP and how much do you pay a month if you don't mind me asking? Right now I use Comcast and pay about $55 a month for about 25mbps/2.7mbps (probably higher if I had a closer server to me).
I always get so mad when I read through these threads. Think your internet is slow? Well at least you don't have Chinese internet which is not only slow with ~1 Mbps download, but also has sites like Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Imageshack, Rapidshare, Megaupload, Mediafire, Filesonic, Fileserve, Blogspot, Google+, Google docs etc blocked. Even Amazon and Google search periodically don't load.
I would upload a Speedtest but for some reason the upload test isn't working.

Totally true, but we also have the same land mass as the USA but only 1/13th of the people to support it, so there has to be a trade off somewhere. I'm at least getting 5Mb/s on a good day, but only 0.2Mb/s upload.
Since it sais picture or it did not happen, the servers for the speedtest so have to use another one and flash are just too slow for those speeds. 1Gbit I have.
Upload is faster than that too, servers are so bad these days qq =(
What sucks is you just cannot use it for ANYTHING legal and get something worthwhile out of it compared to 100mbit.
Too bad Slovenia isn't on the graph, we have a lot of ISPs that provide 10+mbit/s connections at very reasonable prices and 3 ISPs that have optical networks where 10/10 is the lowest package, for 1 even 20/20.
I get 8mb down, .8mb up. I could get 100mb down for something like 80/month, but since im not at a permanent residence im holding back. I do live in an area of the U.S. that is pretty damn cheap compared to the rest of the country, so maybe that is why I pay a bit less than some of you for better download.

Those speeds can't really be used for anything beside multiple computers downloading/uploading files. That download bandwidth totally kills more or less any SATA hdd. :D
I've been offered 1000/100 Mbit but there's just no real private application for it.
We pay for 15Mbit but because of a bad connection we receive slightly less than 4, 33€/month. Our volume 'recently' got upgraded from 25 gig to 100.

Well obviously you have to take into consideration the the faster the connection is the less you will generally pay per mb of speed, Nobody will make money providing 1mb connections for 80cents/month, and the worth of extra MB decreases, there is much bigger difference between 1mb and 50mb connection then 50mb, and 100mb connection in practice.
As for me Fibber on the other side of the small street with 120mb connection, and me with 2mb wireless connection on the other :/.
Your chart is even worse. Japan isn't even top 20 in yours, which is pretty laughable. Pando Network's report: 1. South Korea 2. Romania 3. Bulgaria 4. Lithuania 5. Latvia 6. Japan 7. Sweden 8. Ukraine 9. Denmark 10. Hong Kong
I was confused and thought everyone had super-internet until I noticed it said "Mb" and not "MB" in those pictures ^^
Anyhow, we are supposed to have 1000Mbit down but I have yet to only access a little above 200, on upload I haven't reached more than 80Mbit. The payment for it is bundled with the rent in some mandatory payment for TV and internet at ~22$.
108 mbit, think the highest I ever clocked was 124. It varies between 80-110 usually. Keep in mind my dad pays for my internet since there's sometimes up to 6 people in my house using the internet pretty heavily (for normal people's standards anw).
2,7MB/s download speed, quite slow for a Swedish city (that average for sweden compared to Japan doesn't make much sense.... I'd say almost every house within any city of at least 30 000 citizens has 100MBit connection, the question is whether or not people pay for it).

...maybe by the fact that this thread is over 4 years old? -.-
Slower than 90% of GB, and isn't my download speed meant to be higher than my upload speed? And that ping looks a bit high...
My internet fluctuates so much it isn't even funny. On a random week or so I can watch multiple streams at 720p or sometimes 1080p, but normally when its crap like it is today its crap for much longer than it is good. It has taken me more than an hour to watch a 10 minute video...
Does anyone know how I can actually fix this? Do I just need to get a better provider? My mum always gets mad at me when I complain about the internet as she says "we can't get better internet it's just our area". But surely, SURELY there must be something better than this shit
I'm SUPPOSED to be getting around 12 - 15 Mb/s download, 1 Mb/s up...
What Rogers is doing to me though is saying "ah, we'll just set up our infrastructure so you can't get anything consitent... by the way Rob, your connection will peak at 13Mb/s during the middle of the night, but function at ~3Mb/s during the times you actually want to use it, because we're douches like that".
In conclusion, the Canada-wide telecom monopoly that's going on is really grinding my gears...
He's on a university internet they're some of the fastest in the country. I know plugging into my wall at school i can easily break over 100 mb. I don't remember the exact number but i remember downloading the entirety of World of Warcraft from the blizzard site in like 5 minutes.
I feel like this is really good compared to others.....
It is. Your upload is actually pretty ridiculous compared to most people. Most ISP's will prioritize download speed (and for good reason). Your upload speed though is also very high.
I'm downloading 11-12 mb/s when I'm in my place. Since that's bytes and not bit I have to take the number times 8? That would be something around 80 to 100mbit I guess? Can't test it right now because I'm at my parents place sadly. I'm pretty sure my ping is something with only 1 digit all the time. At least when I'm playing lol I get a ping of 7 or 8 all the time (my roommate only got a ping of 9 :p) Yeah university internet ftw.
Measured right now U/D 75/54 Mbit/s, the actuall speed depends mainly on the routing in the building, ethernet overhead and whatnot. From the building, there is a 10Gb/s link (for about 1000 people, but technically, that is still way enough) , but the ethernet inside is only 100Mbit. 4 Euros/month.
However, on campus, depending on the area, whether I'm wired or not, and in the case of wireless, how many people are in the building, I can get anywhere from 60 mb/s down/25 up to 250 down/60 up.
Gotta love being able to download a DVD in about five minutes :D
I pull about 15+ megabits/s off ADSL, I'm quite content with it because it's very stable and I have very rarely experienced any trouble with my connection. Luckily you only need lowish ping to battlenet to play SC2, not much traffic goes through afaik, so lower down speeds are fine for SC2, can't say the same about downloading other stuff though (:

There is a difference. I can for example get 100Mbit + speeds inside my own country but am happy when I get 10Mbit cross-Atlantic. If they take that into account then countries like South Korea faces serious problems in comparisons.

Universities are specifically setup to have ridiculous internet, and it helps that everyone is geographically clustered together on campus.
When you have commercial providers, and they have miles upon miles upon miles of feeder lines running all over the place through towns and cities, it will definitely make a difference. Universities are always going to get insane results. I'm more curious about how various commercial companies perform against each other (in my case, specifically for the USA - I'm happy to see my company has most of the highest results).
On December 23 2011 03:06 EvilTeletubby wrote: Universities are specifically setup to have ridiculous internet, and it helps that everyone is geographically clustered together on campus.
It's more than that. the universities, being the forefathers of the internet, are pretty central in terms of networking. For example, in the UK there is JANET, which is a 100gb/s network specifically for linking universities together. So you're not only living right next to your exchange, your exchange is also a regional exchange.

I think you are generalizing too much. Our dormitory is just basically a tall building with very small flats. We are half a kilometer from one university building - but apart from that, we are quite isolated form the rest, they are just scattered across the city. There is basically no "campus" at all here. There is no pracitcal difference between the dormitory and any other of the large appartement houses out there, wehere the commercial provider wires all the flats and puts one thick fiber from the outside. The technology is very similar.
The real point is that we get the connectivity paid be the goverment though grants. We are diretly connected to the research network that is deisgned to foster data exchange between scientific insititutions. The fact that half the capacity is probably movies, is another thing Actually, at the moment, I am breaking the rules - officialy I am supposed to be using the internet only to do stuff related to the study! - that i consider absurd. I live there, I have no way to get any other internet connection apart from mobile, so am I completely forbidden from using the internet like a normal human being? Luckily, nobody makes a big deal out of that. But some things are absolutely taboo, torrents being a prime example.
For some reason I can't get the "Share This Result" button to work. >_<
EDIT: It seems that Speedtest.net glitches on results greater than 1000 Mbps (it doesn't give you a picture). I got one test out of about 20 trying to figure out the problem that gave me a sub 1000 Mbps result. I ended up getting 1400+ Mbps result by retesting though. ^^
Nice...I should apply to Iowa State University just for the internet. lol
7.24 down, .61 up, ping is 29 ms. Pretty typical result for me, paying for 10 down, 1 up, but I don't think I've actually gotten that, which is really annoying. Every now and then my internet fucks up and I get .01 down, .01 up, and over 1000 ms ping, it's incredibly frustrating
paying for 20/1 though but Telstra and Australian net in general is ultra bad
Not even aware there are internet speeds better than this except in the CBD of Sydney, I guess if I was getting the 20/1 speed I should be it would be better than ~95% of Aus.
Anyone have experience w/ getting their interwebs throttled? I'm stuck w/ Comcast living in the Pacific NW (Portland, OR) and it has never been a problem until the last month. Anything I can do?
Israel is not on the chart it got me lol hard as our internet is complete turd. This is probably the fastest we can get right now with a reasonable price. Not helped by the fact that the Hotbox modem I have is a complete crap.

Wow, that actually did help a lot. Here are the results:
All these internet sites that test your speed are just dumb. Instead,
1. Go into Command Prompt (hit the windows key, type "cmd" and hit enter) 2. Type in "ping www.teamliquid.net -t" 3. Profit
This will give you a real-time connection test to any server you want, just type in whatever website you want. Your speed is under "ms = BLANK". I usually get 40-45 which is an average connection for U.S. locations. Anything above that means a slower connection. You can also get a "Request timed out" report, which means data is actually being lost.

Mine is really bad, like 1Mbit down .5 up. I just moved and the cable company here has quite the racket going on with my leasing company. They don't tell you the speed when you move in then basically force you to upgrade if you want to do anything that isn't just basic web surfing.
I don't think my internet was ever this bad even when I had 56k (speaking in relative terms with regard to the types of applications people did). Guess I shell out another 40$ a month
It is ok i guess, but it crashes about every day a few times >.< we are hoping to upgrade the ISP, although the upload speed could use a bit better speed as well. oo
I have a 100mbit connection but I only get about 75 most of the time. My upload is pretty bad though, only 5 mbit. I pay 100 a month, and that includes TV so it's like 80$ a month. For 20$ more I can go to 250 download and 15 upload, which I might when I upgrade my computer for streaming.
I pay about 25€ for my 100Mbit. I can upgrade to 200Mbit for a few euros. I can also upgrade to 1Gbit in 1 month, which is quite usual in some major cities in Sweden.
Anyone on telecom thats getting their Internet data allowance doubled? They've done this twice for me, started off with 20gb cap, now I'm getting 80gb for the same price.
I don't think it's every performed that well or as advertised though... TPG has worked well so far, but I am sort of waiting for the penny to drop in a few months...

That's actually really good for TPG. Are you right next to the exchange or what?
I get 30/1.5 with Telstra HFC, which I've been surprisingly happy with once I stopped needing to actually deal with them.

Yeah same here, going from 60 to 120gb. As far as I'm aware pretty much everyone is getting an increased data cap.
Please, we had one of these threads back on GosuGamers about four years ago. Do we really need another one? Seriously? (Yes, joking ^_^")
Advertised: "24 down/1 up" (EDIT: 150GB of quota, uploads COUNTED, not that that matters that much for me, at $60/month) Speedtest: 7.82Mbps down, 0.85Mbps up, ping was 29ms, but really I usually get worse results, more around 7.0 down/0.8 up/45 ms ping and that's just Speedtest. A direct and unmetered download from the server would usually come at around that speed, but right now it's peaking at about 720KBps (5.76Mbps) before gradually dropping back down. I've heard of that happening on problematic connections to distant sites but it's happening just to the ISP. I always seem to get the weird internet and program problems that no one knows how to solve and that don't have the obvious top-20 google search result solutions. The worst thing is that the weird and frustrating disconnects and other issues I've had have not been solved in the ~two years my contract with the ISP has lasted with no real solution, only seemingly sheer luck causing it to seem fine for another couple of months before it deteriorates again, I've tried three routers from them (two of the same model and one being refurbished though -_-"), the arranged cable guys have found no supposed issue and no one at Internode, despite having Australia's #1 ranking for customer support, actually has a clue what the hell to do about it or what the trouble is, which became increasingly worse with the last guy's supervisor convincing him that the problem would be solved by me fiddling with through Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections as if I wouldn't have fucking thought of that in two years of misery and numerous long over-the-phone attempts at troubleshooting with the ISP. How do they even hire people who sound so relieved and thoroughly convinced that things like that will work all of a sudden? I'm told that they are generally expected to assume by default that the customer is not knowledgeable, but it sound more like they're now HIRING people who know nothing by default (until gradually taught on the job). fmI. + Show Spoiler +

yup same thing for me, going from 60 to 120gb, for i think 90 bucks a month... compared to other countries were getting ripped off...but hey, what can we do? =.=
And this is at its best.. come peak time, which seems to be 4pm -> 11pm I can get as low as 0.6mb down and only up to about 2mb on a good day (which is rare). This really sucks cus it means I can only watch 480p streams, sometimes I can't even watch those..
Can you believe we pay £21 per month for this shit? I do live in a small town so I know I can't really expect fibre obtic here, but to pay that much for such low speeds makes me mad. I'm trying to convince parents to move to sky, we will probably get similar speeds but at least its only £7.50 a month so I wouldn't feel so robbed!

When it came time to make the internet, people just thought "ooh, copper wire, let's use that", and ignored the fact that copper wire built for telegraphs doesn't really make the best interent connection. In Japan and Korea, they didn't have that, so they had to build a new network, based on fiber optics, specificically for internet, which works much better.
umm everyone is using optic for core networks for ages now.. copper is history pretty much everywhere
I pay EUR 13/month, i'm quite satisfied. I can actually make it cheaper by signing a new contract or sth, but i'm too lazy to go to the office of the provider
Does TuneUp (the service I see advertised on Speedtest) really work? I'm thinking of trying it before I post how shit tier my internet is D; edit: googled around for a bit, it doesn't look very different from CCleaner.
It's a shitty thing here in Germany: If you are not living in a city of 500,000+ inhabitants, you are probably not getting more than this. We pay like 60$ for it, including phone line. At least there are no bandwidth caps, even though some German ISPs try to bring them back... Especially the upload sucks, streaming at 960x540...

im living in cologne and i got 25 Mb/s. I (and my roommate) only pay 30Euro / month, including phone etc. Its nice to have, but i dont really need i that badly tbh.
My parents only have 3k and thats the maximum they can get in that region..
Im from a small place in norway, I got the best aviable connection I can have. Its a 25/5mbps and it cost around 60USD. There was no option for 15-30mbps in the vote btw.
I'm pretty satisfied with this (I'm promised 30/30 so it's good performance), I could buy 100/100 but I don't really see the point. I pay 288 SEK / month which is about $40 (with current dollar course, although from my experience of like what prices are at in the us, it "feels" more like $29 given income and so on, the swedish Krona is pretty strong compared to the USD atm).
Haha, elimzkE, are you on Fibre-Optic then, or is that cable? How far is this NBN so far, barely across any of the country, right? Ausfailia - the plan has changed numerous times, but unless you're hosting a server that uploads huge amounts of data each month, I see no reason for you to be on what looks like the 'Extreme' range when you could just be on Easy Broadband (not bundled).
Edit without needing the edit function: Oh you bastard ISP, my goodness, I knew they'd basically changed the current version of my plan from 150GB/month at $60/month to 200GB/month at $70/month, but one step below is now only $60GB/$60. Rat-scum, cheating, son-of-a-....... I mean I'm lucky in that I made the choice when I could see it was one of the best I'd seen in ages and this is my first connection (starting ~August 2010 though), but then they've been useless at solving the troubles I've had so neither deal feels so good to me. I wish South Korean or Japanese companies would invade us and implement their technology in exchange for land (that is compulsorily acquired from inbred feral bogan filth, of course).
Fuchsteufelswild: I'm on Telstra Bigpond Cable Ultimate, good sir! As of late I haven't been hitting over 105mbps down, but my upload has increased to 2.48mbps so I can't complain ^_^
We really need a new poll going on the OP, five years old :/ Results will be very different now.
At my rents house for the week. Decided to post after disconnecting from my game because my dad was checking his email. This is the connection we've had since dial up was no longer cool.
Connection at my own house, however.. Costs €56/month, but split four ways.
My internet is sexy. I live so comfortably as a guy who loves downloading huge torrent files =) My parents pay $45 for it too. Doesn't that sound so cheap?
University internet. TBH though a lot of these super-huge results are partially because of how local the test server is-- I always like to test a state away as well
Wow just upgrade your package from Shaw. I use Shaw and it is really well costed for the 100mbit connection, or even the 50. The thing I hate about internet here, though, is that upload speed is really restricted. You gotta pay a lot for sweet upload speed
why does everyone have such high upload rate? some even have higher upload rate than download rate lol I have 32mb/s download and just 1mb/s upload.....
Brazilian's internet is pretty expensive, but we do have one single company (called GVT) which tends to offer good prices for us, like 35 MB is only $40 dollars (which is cheap for the national standards and average prices).
Virgin Media 50mb/s down with <5mb up. The speed is going to be doubled by September though, according to their website. We're paying £35 for the entire package: cable TV, landline and the internet.
Most of you guys are fairly lucky in regards to internet connection costs. Here in South Africa an average type of connection is too expensive for the majority of citizens. However, many of us privileged ones do what we can to pay for the best possible connections at the most reasonable of prices. At present my internet is rather slow because it is near the end of the month and I have gone way over my cap limit, thus my ISP is throttling me. Fortunately they never cut my line until the next month. Usually though I receive a speed of around 6mb/s download with a 8mb/s upload. Paying to increase the cap limit is far beyond my dad's comprehension, so I come by with what I have each month.
EDIT - I'll post an old Speedtest result, taken more than a month ago just to give you guys an idea. My speed fluctuates btw, so it is not always exactly what I have stated above.
Atm Ive got 100 mbit up and 100 mbit down for 139 SEK (14,84 EUR, 19,52 USD). Ive ordered 1 gbit/s which I´ll get during the summer for 399 SEK per month (42,59 EUR, 56,03 USD) No download cap yay!
Last time I checked at home I had 0.5mbit download and 0.04mbit upload, with an average latency of about 250 - 300. (Edit: And for this we pay more than 50$ per month) Apparently when we were promised that everyone would get internet they thought wireless with bad signal was enough. I'll be getting 100/10mbit soon though, since a lot of people where I live decided to pull together to get proper internet. It'll cost around 1600$ (digging, cables, connecting fees and whatnot) and then an additional ~50$/month. Totally worth every penny.
Using the internet at my school. Pretty decent, but I have a 10gb limit per week so that kind of sucks. I can't download anything too big or watch television online. Hope they increase the cap next year. It used to be 4 gb cap.
Calgary, Alberta. 400gb monthly limit but i've never actually been charged for going over (and I have a premium usenet account that I use alot along with a 4tb hard drive + various other 1tb drives).
We pay for 50/5 and usually get around 45/4. Today it's been a bit slow, though it usually is on weekends. From what I can tell, we have no cap even though Shaw's website says we do, because their primary competition here, Sasktel, does not have caps on any of their internet packages, so if Shaw tries to enforce them people just threaten to switch to Sasktel.
The results of Speedtest vary quite a bit. If I pick a server in my own city, I get a speed of 20Mb/s and a ping of over 100, yet if I pick the capitals in any of the near by provinces I get much higher.
I'm ashamed of my country. 10mbit dl 1mbit upload speed but... After 50gb download it turns to.. 1mbit DL 256 kbps upload. 4 computer in my house. Speed of 90's...
This is a nice site to compare internet stats across the globe. According to them, S-Korea has by far the fastest average connection with 17.5 Mbps, followed by Japan and Hong Kong (both 9.1 Mbps) and the Netherlands (8.2 mbps).
Of course this is the average, and it doesn't say anything about the quality of the connection, nor about the prices.
The only downside of my internet is the 100 GB per month limit. Speaking of that, i still have ten days left until a reset, and i'm at 95 percent >.<
Hi, I checked my Internet speed test at http://www.ip-details.com/ My scan result: Download speed:0.951Mbps Upload speed:0.346Mbps I think the speed is pretty good!
US internet sucks, i have 20 mb/s at 50 usd a month i believe..
my parents are paying 90 usd for .5 mb/s!!! albeit they live in the middle of the mountains so all they can get is satellite internet , i used to lag worse than peruvians on iccup..
Right now, I'm sitting on a 20/5 mbit connection. 24 months long deal, I pay a grand total of nothing for the first 6 months and around 10 USD / month for the remaining 18.
Im not even going to bother posting my terrible Australian internet connection we are even below New Zealand for gods sake and their whole country is practically rural. I can't even comprehend having 20mb/s wanting things and then they download in a matter of minutes? Patching games in like seconds? Porn must be brilliant. Don't worry though in 5+ years the NBN will have come through most suburbs in Australia (who knows m,aybe even mine!) and we will have good internet hopefully cheaper. See you in the same thread in 2017
To be quite honest: I'm rather sitting here with my cozy 20/2 and a german, well-built router than having those 200/50 connections and yet being totally dependent on my ISP to change my static IP (as you can see throughout the last weeks, where streamers can't do shit against problems such as DDOSing).
My internet and choices available are a complete joke and scam since I live in a rural area.
Currently have Verizon DSL. Not the one paying for it so I am not certain of the price but it advertises as 3Mbps and we get about ~0.7-0.8Mbps.
The other choice is CrapOne, I mean CableOne. $58~ for their 5Mbps/500kbps plan. If you go over a certain amount in a day(VERY LOW AMOUNT) you get throttled to half that. If you do it on over half the days in a month they can terminate your account, etc.
The only way to bypass this is to get their Business plans. ~$78 for a 5Mbps/1Mbps plan with unlimited data, or $78 for a 50Mbps/1Mbps with a 100GB monthly cap.
Unless you go dial up(which my DSL pretty much is at this point) or Satellite(about same speeds as my DSL around here), you're screwed unless you move.
Here are todays stats. Bad weather makes it even worse:
The test gave me a .06Mbps download and a .15Mbps upload. I just moved to a place in wisconsin about 30 minutes away from the twin cities and the only two options here are either satalite(super high ping=no games) or a MiFi device from a cell phone company. I have the MiFi and it is on 2G speed right now because I have a max download of 10Gb/month and then it goes from 4G(slow) to 2G(carrior pidgon speed)
Not worth a screeny but i live in rural area as well and luckily there is some random wireless ISP that serves here ( www.ffni.com ) no idea what the actual technology is...but I get 3mpbs/3mpbs...the ironic thing is for some reason i can watch 1080p streams (MLG,Netflix, hulu, everything!) and its great for streaming since its 3 upload...its strange that 3mpbs can handle 1080p i dont really understand but its great! Ironically I work for Verizon, wouldnt mind getting the fios but I dont live anywhere near their served areas :/
Not bad for Australia and it's increasing rapidly. Can't wait for the NBN to reach us. I pay $6/week to have a phone line and $2/week for internet connection unlimited downloads. Speed is throttled to this kind of level from 7am-7pmKST, faster at other times.
Edit: I don't like that I had to wait more than 30 minutes for the client and all the patches of SC2 to download. We need better connection to Singapore/US.

This might seem like a decent number to the average American, but the price for this connection is ridiculously high compared to almost any foreign post on this thread. I'm not even happy with this connection, even when it's the fastest home service offered. Sometimes I'll completely lose internet for a full 10-12 seconds, then it's perfectly fine.

I understand your issues because in the past I have worked for that ISP of yours. Also live on the west coast of Florida near Tampa so I do have the same ISP. That is the Roadrunner Lighting service you got there. The network is fine on the software end of things for the most part. It is just the hardware they install is absolute crap for the most part and needs some serious revamping.

You are so lucky. How much do you pay for internet? Mine is $54 monthly for a supposed 18/2 connection with I only get around 1-4/1.2 for on average on speedtest. Should I be asking my ISP(Cox) about it or is that normal?

I have one question. How much?
Virgin Media royally fucked me back in the day when they just took over NTL charging me £90 while I received no channels then threatened to sue for me deciding not to pay. But I must admit they are doing their best to take over and are doing a decent job of it.
If you live near the "big" cities in Sweden you should get comparable internet to Korea and Japan however there's lots of remote and rural areas with expensive and bad internet.

You americans are seriously getting shafted hard by ISPs. I pay 30 $ for a 100 Mb/s connection and I get 114 .
Not sure if it's completely North Americans "getting shafted" but rather something different. Canadians complain all the time about cell phone and internet rates, but when you look at our population density compared to big names like Korea and Japan it makes a lot more sense. The infrastructure costs are completely different.
Canada: 3.75 people per square km Sweden: 21 ppl/km2 Japan: 336 ppl/km2 Korea: 504 ppl/km2
Take about a month ago (June 4th). Currently not home so can't check what I get now. Were paying about $300 USD a month for this lolwat fiber connection.
my test said that i have 40 000 kbps. which is 40 mbits i think. pretty good if i have to say myself. Never experiencing lag due to internet connection
I got 0,37 mb/s. I should be really happy right? ....Yeah. I live in a Redneck village in a horrible spot really far away from one of those big towers so the connection is absolutely horrible and it can't get better.
It's usually at about 63-65 download and between 10 and 20 upload with a ping of 3-5 but now I'm sharing my internet with the laptop, so that slows it down a little bit. I am amazed to see it's still way above average and I pay roughly 8 dollars a month(actually a little bit less and I also get free phone service in the provider's network with 2 phones provided by them) I'd say it's a pretty sweet deal.

Being a dick is not an appropriate response to him appropriately calling you out for making a retarded statement (the same thing I called you out on). You can try to make a horrible attempt at arguing semantics to get yourself out of it, but "fiber" is pretty commonly the short-hand of "fiberoptics" which in your context, is the way you meant it precisely. Which is what makes you wrong.

WHAT?!?!
your complaining because your only receiving 4mbit when your paying for 5?!?!?! im paying for 20mbit and im barely receiving 1.1mbit download.
and im with virgin. who are supposed to be competent. go figure.
oh and one more thing. im more than likely an idiot who understands nothing about downloading to a computer, but it does not matter how many different applications i have open or how many torrents i have running, the total amount never surpasses 1.1mbit download and is usually at 300kbits even when speedtest.net usually gives me a result between 1mbt down and 20mbit down.

WHAT?!?!
your complaining because your only receiving 4mbit when your paying for 5?!?!?! im paying for 20mbit and im barely receiving 1.1mbit download.
and im with virgin. who are supposed to be competent. go figure.
oh and one more thing. im more than likely an idiot who understands nothing about downloading to a computer, but it does not matter how many different applications i have open or how many torrents i have running, the total amount never surpasses 1.1mbit download and is usually at 300kbits even when speedtest.net usually gives me a result between 1mbt down and 20mbit down.
dear that was back in 2007, say oh 5 years ago.
also, that might be becuase you have unlimited amount of downloads, via your isp, but it could well be capped at the speed, because the uk is so behind if everyone tried to have 8mb dl then it would just die.
I have time warner, I supposedly got the 20 mb/s package but end up peaking out at around 1.8MB/s downloading. Still hard to complain though, I almost never need anything faster (and thanks to utorrent I can stream TV shows while I'm downloading, someone deserves a medal for inventing that!)
China's internet is pretty bad... even in Beijing and on top of that the internet is censored TT, you have no idea how i envy you people with even 1MB/s uncensored internet ^_^
Got 8 down 1 up mbs here, been very sufficient. Though when I had to redownload steam games etc. to my new HDD (old died and couldn't salvage all) it took some time. Remembering the old days of 56kb modems and shit... modern connections are just great.
This is at 7:52am, when my internet isn't disconnecting every 15mins~ D; Dont suppose anyone near the area has recommendations on how to get better results/ISP etc (or really just any general advice from anyone, I'm dying here!)

I notice many people don't know the difference between Mbps (megabits per second) and MBps (megabytes per second). All ISPs advertise their internet connection speed in megabits (8 bits = 1 byte), so you have to divide your connection speed by 8 to get the rate in Megabytes per second. Your connection works almost optimally, theoreticaly it should peak at about 2.5MB/s, so you're pretty close.

Did you ever notice that the Countries with faster/cheaper internet are smaller in size? I mean physical size, not population.
I pay $2/week for uncapped speed and unlimited data. I get speeds of up to 450/250Mbps on anything Australia based - though the speed does drop once I start downloading transpacific.
Infrastructure and pricing in major cities should not be seriously affected by overall population density or size for the country. It should be linked only to development level of the country and efficiency of the government in infrastructure development and maintenance.
25/25 fiber connection. My upload had kimchi for breakfast, reason for it being so strong \o/ Had to pay 642$ to get the optical fiber cable to my house. Monthly fee is 74$.
The awesome thing is that since about a third of everyone in my city are students, the competition among internet providers is insane here, so I'm only paying about 5$ a month.
100Mbit\s atm. they will be upgrading their service to 500Mbit\s sometime soon, not sure if i will be paying for that though, the 100Mbit\s is suitable for everything i do atm edit: fiber connection btw
I only have a few Mb/s which annoys me >.< (2 down/1 up) Im supposed to be having a 5Mb down rate but because I live in an area that Bell Canada has decided to not fiber-optic-ize yet, I don't get the whole of it.
It feels weird that I once upon a time two years ago upgraded my internet from 5 to 10 Mbit. Now I am stuck at 2 Mbit and not caring much. Patience is a virtue! Sooner or later I get the files/content I requested, why care unless the difference is several weeks?
